wow. wow. ow! that sucks so much. i hope he makes a speedy recovery. when i was in jr. high, i accidently stigmata-ed myself with a broken car antenna. i have a scar on my left hand to prove it. actually, it's more of an indentation...
anyway, paul, if you read this... please get better soon. the world needs you now more than ever.

I thought Hootie's Burger King commercials were much better than anything the Blowfish ever did. ouch! (but i agree)

Bizarro world is perfect. I prefer to look at it as something that adds to the Replacements legacy rather than detracts from it. i'm going to stop you right there. ts's g n' r status has nothing to do with the replacements' legacy. it's just his thing he is doing now. like hootie doing burger king commercials. i don't fault him for the paycheck, but i choose to ignore it.

i can see both sides for sure. tommy's decision certainly hasn't diminished my love of his work with the 'mats, or bash & pop, or perfect, or solo.
it's real simple for me. while, i don't begrudge him a paycheck, the idea of him in g 'n r is absolutely bizarro world batshit crazy. i still can't get used to the idea, and wonder daily if i am in some extended fever dream.
i think it is on the boot "shit shower & shave", tommy makes fun of axl during nightclub jitters.
again, him being in the dysfunctional family that is g 'n r is just plain weird, and i don't like it. so, i will continue to ignore g n' r until they finally, at long last, disappear off the face of the earth. simultaneously, i will celebrate tommy's catalog, and pine desperately for tommy to patch it up with paul once & for all & record with him. not as the replacements, but as my generations glimmer twins.

paul has more soul in his voice than a thousand dandies with acoustic guitars over the years.
in recent years, i think his confidence to use it has taken the hit. i think he is finding it again, though.

speaking of "hard to wave in handcuffs", i am pretty sure songs like "hey kid" & "promise you nothing" are from the same era/home session. of those other two, i would LOVE to hear "promise you nothing" recorded today as solo paul. i think it is also known as "cool your jets". the version i am listening to right now would actually work on cfmt or mono, i think. There's a whole collection of songs that were recorded about this time. I always assumed that they were recorded in his home on a cheap recorder, as most of them are pretty hissy, and of pretty bad quality. He also has a coughing fit during some of the songs. He'd probably be pretty embarrassed to hear these today. Some of them sound like the bad imitators that you sometimes see on Youtube. yup. i have a cd of them called "home demos" or some such shit. still, i maintain there are some possible gems in there. the aforementioned "promise you nothing/cool your jets" is a great example.

in the "book" version of 14 songs, he mentions a song called "two tears" in the interview. something like that. Thanks, Scooter, I forgot about that one. The song is actually "Two Raindrops", but it doesn't sound like it was ever recorded. Q: How does songwriting come to you? Is it inspiration, or just work?A: Both. Nine times out of ten, though, the sit-down-and -write ones don't ever make it. There was a song called "Two Raindrops" that was beautiful and everything, but when it came down to recording it, it just didn't feel right.a ha! leave it to blasty.

Pleasure Of Your Company, Thoroughbred, King Of America, Cheyenne( listen to a short clip HERE). He also mentioned C'mon Little Bitch, but that ended up on Besterberg, so maybe there's hope that these other songs will surface someday, also. there is always hope. i love that cheyenne song... in the "book" version of 14 songs, he mentions a song called "two tears" in the interview. something like that.

The ultimate lost rarity is the tape Paul made with Bob Mould sometime in the mid-80's. Legend has it they recorded some songs together on a cassette, but they both hated the result, and threw the tape out the window of Bob's car. Imagine someone found that sucker... Yeah, Kurt Cobain. he shoots! he scores!!!!

That being said, Friday Night is Killing Me is my favorite post Mats work of anyone. Thank you. I said the same thing a few days ago and didn't get an amen. It's a fantastic album and the production has that rare and magical balance of polish and raw energy. It's got a great punchy sound without ever sounding over-produced (like I thought Village Gorilla Head was). I keep hoping that Paul will somehow manage to find that sound, but he seems to go from one extreme to the other. ahem. i gave you an extended amen, brother. (check out the "youtube patrol" thread)

i maintain that the clash exhibit should be a touring, mobile affair that takes place in union halls, police stations, army barracks, and fire stations around the countries. Or maybe as a nod to Strummer's busking days, on the sidewalks outside of those places... right! i wish strummer was still around...

there is some temporary clash exhibit there, and i would like to see that, but i can't bring myself to really want to enter the rock hall. i maintain that the clash exhibit should be a touring, mobile affair that takes place in union halls, police stations, army barracks, and fire stations around the countries.

i was supposed to go last night, but i completely forgot. i honestly have no excuse. i really just forgot.
so, i am just getting into the hold steady with the album "separation sunday". i describe them thusly:
sounds like the murder city devils playing the black crowes.
and i mean that in the best possible sense because 'separation sunday' is growing on me in a big way.
