I always figured the images were metaphors for heroin, too. Also loved that "Even Here We Are" had the flowers "in the garbage dump" reference, which somehow reminded me of "Black-Eyed Susan." i so love both of those songs. the remind me most of paul's most recent basement tapes.

maybe all of this discussion about what is, and what it isn't is a perfect illustration why the rock hall is stupid. maybe not. i don't know. i stand by my statements, but can see the other argument, too. to me, i know rock & roll when i see it. they ought to just let me decide who gets in & who doesn't. Well, that would be ONE way for Rush to get in. is a battlestar galactica comment on the way? (oh, and i totally agree with gage)

rock & roll is everything ergo, anyone/band who contributed to the development of r & r belongs. I think that's the problem, it is turning into the proverbial kitchen sink to include any music that isn't classical. All the genres bleed into each other but there is still predominance of jazz, blues, RnB, and RnR for most acts, and Miles & Louis would fall into jazz, Guy into Blues. I mean, some of the Stooges stuff had a jazz current in it, but they certainly wouldn't be in a jazz hall of fame. i agree that this presents something of a "problem", but only if you need strict boundaries in your music (not you, in particular, areg). to me, it just seems easy money to include public enemy, madonna, buddy guy, etc. into the one, the only, the retarded... rock & roll hall of fame. you can tell, i don't like the hall, but i think for it to be legit it should pay tribute to all the musicians who drove popular rock & roll culture forward. i have said before, i wish that display would tour away from the rock hall. i have literally no desire to go to the r & r hall of fame, and i doubt that will ever change. i'd like to see the clash stuff, but not enough to go to cleveland.

They lost me when they started inducting non-rock & roll acts into regular membership in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Exactly. I know Eric Clapton loves him(cough, cough) but in what world does Buddy Guy deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and someone who actually plays Rock and Roll, like Iggy Pop, has to wait so long? to take nothing away from iggy, i have to say, WOW, i disagree with your general statement. rock & roll is chuck berry rock & roll is the rolling stones rock & roll is the clash rock & roll is buddy guy rock & roll is everything ergo, anyone/band who contributed to the development of r & r belongs. all that said, i never want to visit that building.

Open Season didn't fit into any of the stereotypical oscar parts... Songs from popular musicals Songs by established 'movie' songwriters Songs from 'important' movies Almost as bad as the Grammys, it's just an excuse for Hollywood to slap each other on the back. Do you think they had Coppola, Lucas, and Spielberg together so they could award the director of United 93? I'm not dissing The Departed, I'm looking forward to seeing it... but I get the feeling they were gonna give Marty an Oscar even if he made Duece Bigelow IV. Too bad "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" by Dropkick Murphys from "The Departed" was not written for the movie, they might have had a shot at a nom at least, what with all the (long-overdue) Oscar love for Scorsese. i really loved the departed, and i thought the inclusion of that song at various points was brilliant. actually, the music was, well - to be expected from scorsese, great in general.

It doesn't look like the new DVD contains any bonus "behind the scenes" Westerberg material. If someone sits through the director's commentary, please let us know if there's any mention of Paul. ....'cause I know I sure won't sit through the commentary. The movie was just so-so to begin with. I'll sit through it for you when I get the dvd in a few days... I am guessing the the commentary will probably be better than the actual movie. CF yeah, my 5 year old liked the movie, but damn, it was pretty bad. still.... *cranks 'wild as i wanna be' (paul version)*

Not to discount anything that's been said above, and I totally agree with it, but I always thought that "playin' makeup, wear a guitar" had a sort of semi-autobiographical tinge to it. I seem to remember an interview with PW where he talked about having to wear makeup on stage (as most bands do). that's true, too. i mean, tommy at least certainly has worn some makeup in his time.... man, fvcking great lines.

.....After listening to Left of the Dial repeatedly, I think he does say "pretty girls keep throwing up." Yeah, I always thought he was singing "throwing up" but I guess it makes more sense lyrically that he's realling singing "growing up". Ah, who knows but Paul? I think Paul gets a chuckle out of seeing the fans parse every sentence and try and figure out what he's really singing. And that's why I think he shies away from printing lyrics with his CD's. He likes the wordplay and the ambiguity and having us scratch our heads wondering how the line goes! didn't paul once say that he didn't want lyrics printed because it implies that they are poetry & can stand on their own; which is his way of ripping on himself, obviously. it does raise the question of his feelings about "suicaine", then, as the lyrics were included in some of the versions. anyway, paul is certainly NOT misogynistic. throwing up/growing up... it's all good. but i am so glad that landshark brought up the subsequent lines. i meant to bring those up, too, and i think they are important to the discussion.

i don't think there is a thing sexist about the line. i, too, simply think it is a play on words. in order for his lyrics to a song to be judged sexist, one would have to look at his lyrics as a whole. i think there have been enough evidence in his lyrics to rule out sexism.... i'm thinking the lyrics to "little mascara" & "androgynous" in particular.
also, and i could be completely off base (i have never held my stripes in the 'mats trivia army), isn't "lotd" about (at least in part - maybe THAT part) about the female bassist for the band let's active?

if i may... i had a very similar injury when i was in 8th grade. my left hand was impaled (top through to palm) with a severed car antenna.
*waits for gasps to subside*
it hurt like a motherfvcker, and i had to get shots, and my hand was shot for awhile. still, i came back just fine. i am a guitar player (not a good one), and i was at the time, too. i was fine. now, i don't make my living playing guitar (thank god), and his injury might be far worse (who knows?), but it might be just fine in a relatively short period of time, too.
and yes, i do still have a scar to prove it.
edit: sorry. i just realized i posted this story on page one of this thread. sorry.
