it's always been my second favorite song on folker, a close runner up to "as far as i know". it's got a killer melody, is nicely recorded, and the words, while typically having an unwritten feel about them, actually work better than most of the off the cuff entries on this album. i love all the little vocal overdub touches (wrong), and in particular, the acoustic guitar sound. i nominate it for most unjustly neglected and most criminally never played song since "only lie worth telling". thank you.

I'm with you. It didn't stand out for me on the first couple listens but once it got my attention I was hooked on it for awhile. Great little tune.

"What about Mine?" bears a passing resemblance to Petula Clark's country hit [r] "Look at Mine" (up on Yousendit)[/r] ... they're paired on the sensational compilation, "Batten the Hatches: Songs of Paul Westerberg and Tony Hatch"

I agree completely; I've always loved that song and the little background vocals add so much.

w.a.m. is pretty good, but i just wanted to say that i was unaware that o.l.w.t. is underrated. o.l.w.t. is brilliant.

Apparently PW couldn't remember how to to play it live. N Or maybe he found another lie worth telling? And What About Mine is one of the few PW songs that annoy me just a little....though the sentiment is sweet, just a bit too pleading.

I took it as intentionally annoying, like a kid's pleading "mi-i-i-i-ne" is annoying.

I agree with Lieworth. "As Far as I Know" is my fave, with "What About Mine" right behind it. The one on Folker I always skip is "23 Years Ago." I always figured that his kid inspired "What About Mine," as if PW is singing how he himself behaves like a child when things don't go his way --I'm remembering temper tantrums in Memphis last time out when he threw a harmonica, and maybe a microphone, in disgust. I've mentioned this before, but that Memphis show scared me. But maybe my favorite PW show ever, though. I've never seen anybody be more real and spontaneous than that night. Oh man, when he went into Alice Cooper's "18" I was almost in tears.

Oh man, when he went into Alice Cooper's "18" I was almost in tears. ditto regarding 18, always hoped a boot of that show would appear, mostly for that cover, and the stage banter. My only complaint about that show was the drunk woman behind me that kept falling into the back of my legs....and the two guys in front of me that wanted to have a full conversation, aloud, while PW was playing the acoustic stuff. Always want to ask those guys that since they came to the show to shoot the breeze, why not converse in the back of the club instead of 10 feet from the stage? I suppose the encore made up for it.

I've often thought that "Folker" and "Suicane Gratifaction" were really outside the box records for P.W. Not as quickly taken to as a lot of his other stuff, but more subtle, very creative, well crafted and very satisfying in the long run. "What About Mine" is a good example. It'd be nice to see him come out with another contemplative record after his period of hand rehab, and then maybe follow that up with an all out rocker. His ability to mix it up is one of the things that makes P.W. so great.

I agree---I would have loved for that show to have been bootlegged because it was out of control too. And yeah, I remember that drunk girl too. She also yelled out during one of the nice acoustic numbers, "I LOVE YOUUUUU PAUL!!!!" , just ruining the moment. She also spilled her drink on me and her dumb ass boyfriend didn't try to get her to settle down. I agree with Lieworth. "As Far as I Know" is my fave, with "What About Mine" right behind it. The one on Folker I always skip is "23 Years Ago. You know, I used to skip that song a lot too but then I gave it some hard, repeated listening and then it was like a bomb exploding inside my head once I finally "got it". The last verse really struck me. Maybe I need to go back to WAM.
