I think the die was cast when Open Season was not nominated for best animated film, which only has three nominees. I believe Cars was, which follows the annual randy newman nomination.

Yes, Open Season did not have a prayer in the animated film category. It would be very odd to cull best song from a cartoon which got only mixed reviews, and did mediocre sales. But, stranger things have happened. CF

From an article in the Orange County Register: This year's batch, then, beats a retreat to Oscar's comfort zone. What might have made a victory for "Listen" a little easier to swallow? Different nominations. In all, 56 songs were eligible, including work from Paul Westerberg ("Open Season"), Ben Folds ("Over the Hedge"), Jack Johnson (swell stuff in "Curious George"), Toby Keith ("Broken Bridges"), Tim McGraw ("Flicka"), Sarah McLachlan (sweet in "Charlotte's Web"), Prince (who won the Golden Globe for his track from "Happy Feet"), Chris Cornell's new Bond theme, DeVotchka's expert mood-setting stuff from "Little Miss Sunshine" and the Aretha Franklin-Mary J. Blige duet from "Bobby." OK, so maybe none of those was likely to wow Oscar watchers more than "Listen." But at least in years past voters made room for the likes of Elliott Smith and Aimee Mann among tripe from Elton John and Phil Collins. Last year, with more than 40 songs eligible, they didn't even nominate five; this year, with even more solid choices, they excluded equally worthy (sometimes worthier) candidates to ensure that every "Dreamgirls" tune that was eligible made the cut.

So it's still too bad PW wasn't nominated for Best Song, but giving him that early Lifetime Achievement Award was nice of the Academy.

The entire ceremony, I couldn't help but think how much better it would have been with an appearance from Paul. "I Belong" absolutely smoked that Melissa Etheridge tune. He would have won.

Yeah, I agree. I heard the James Taylor song and Melissa Etheridge song and to my ears, Paul's song is much more melodic, much more memorable. Paul's song kicked high ass over theirs.

again, i could care less about jack johnson, but his soundtrack for curious george was hands down the best collection of songs from a "rocker" last year in a movie. that he didn't get nominated is probably the academy crime of the year.

I think the academy voters stay with the known entities when it comes to music---unless the song becomes a huge radio hit. Otherwise, just look at their choices of whom they nominated. And I'd think that the record labels really made a big push for them as well. Paul just doesn't have that kind of juice behind him. But then again, I dunno just how hard Sony Pics tried to get "I Belong" nominated. Maybe they really did push hard for it. I'm trying to be objective but I just don't think Etheridge's tune is all that memorable compared to Paul's.

Open Season didn't fit into any of the stereotypical oscar parts...
Songs from popular musicals Songs by established 'movie' songwriters Songs from 'important' movies
Almost as bad as the Grammys, it's just an excuse for Hollywood to slap each other on the back. Do you think they had Coppola, Lucas, and Spielberg together so they could award the director of United 93?
I'm not dissing The Departed, I'm looking forward to seeing it... but I get the feeling they were gonna give Marty an Oscar even if he made Duece Bigelow IV.

Too bad "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" by Dropkick Murphys from "The Departed" was not written for the movie, they might have had a shot at a nom at least, what with all the (long-overdue) Oscar love for Scorsese.
