I had read once somewhere that he used to weigh down his shoes or something when he wasn't playing so that he could jump higher while on stage. Probably just another wonderful tall tale though. that was in "all over but the shouting".

with the re-issue of Sorry Ma' ... (IMO the best of the bunch for several reasons, including the addition "If Only You Were Lonely") ... i've come to truly enjoy listening to "Raised in the City," especially the demo version, which is more raw and spontaneous and, dare i say, in some ways, better than the one released. the opening guitar riff and the pounding drums echo what the British movement was doing at the time ... The Jam, perhaps? But the lyrics and direction the song takes is truly Mats-based. based on this, "Raised in the City," is becoming one of my underrated fave things. oh sweet fancy jesus, i can't imagine a world in which raised in the city is "underrated". at least not in the circle of mats fans. in the greater public, sure, it's "underrated" along with mats entire catalog. i have always assumed that fans held raised in the city up to the level of stone-cold classic, and i will continue to do so even if people disagree with me on it. having the demo version of it just seals the deal for me, but truth be told i prefer the one they originally slapped onto "sorry ma..." on another note, we're coming out is the one mats song my college band, diesel zuccini, ever learned how to play.

put me squarely in the "good" column. some are throwaways, but some are very, very good & even enlightening. some i have had for awhile, but my napster version sounded like shit. some i only had on vinyl.
now, i have them on cd. "good" most definitely "good".

so they put an alt vocal take of sixteen blue, but it's not the mix that features chan poling's amazing piano prominently? LAME so far i am completely underwhelmed by the bonus material. i haven't heard anything even mildly revelatory. hey good looking, but a goofy studio take and not the wonderful live version that is the b side to i will dare? COME ON! while i agree with you on sixteen blue, i don't think the bonus material is lame. in fact, i just listened to ain't no crime, and i have never heard it before. it rocks & rocks hard. the fast version of johnny's gonna die is awesome, too. i had a good chunk of this bonus material already (my version of perfect lethal has different lyrics, though), but i am grateful for the ones i didn't have. i, for one, am glad that the hey good lookin' version is a studio one. in fact, i am so glad they didn't include any "live at goofy's" or similar material. i've got enough straight boots. i was lookin' for the studio work. anyone want my old copies of sorry ma - lib cd's? *is looking forward to the next batch of rereleases*

I looked into this 7" and it *is* available only as a promo - you can't buy it, you can only get from the retailer when you also purchase the reissues. ... and best buy doesn't carry it. fyi.

this version of 16 blue makes me wonder just how much stuff is actually out there... the alt take 16 blue i have always had is a version with piano; which i think is just fabulous. this rhino version is cool, too, though. i guess i am just saying that i'll bet there is enough material out there for a full on, heart stopping boxset.

I'm sure we can all disagree with some of Phil's choices, but a double page spread in the fastest growing music mag in the UK is good - especially a few weeks before the reissues come out. yes, it is good to hear about paul in a magazine, but wowie wow wow, it is an understatement to saw we can all disagree with this guy's choices!

Yes! That's been my thought all along. I haven't understood why this CD gets the praise it occasionally does. As you say, it's just...goofing around. Nothing wrong with that, but nothing glorious either. I did the same thing with DMS that I did with Open Season - listened once and shelved it. Can't stand it. I think it's the only PW-related thing I ever bought that felt like a complete rip-off. wow. weird. i really enjoy "open season", but i don't consider it a proper westerberg record, of course. i enjoy ALL of his solo albums to varying degrees. i don't think he has been better (solo) than on s/m, though. i really like cfmt for a lot of the same reasons smorg points out. folker is half on, half off for me. whatever. like a lot of people here, i will buy his next album without hearing a note of it prior. someone shove him to yeproc, and let's start the insanity :-)

who in their right mind would spend time working up a fake acl lineup poster that looks like it could be absolutely real?
seriously.
if you are going to fake something like this, you ought to put foghat & molly hatchet in the lineup.

incidentally, i feel the same way about nirvana's "nevermind". i would do a lot of questionable things to hear a straight, demo-style recording of those songs. Since he was on a shortlist of producers for the album, Bob Mould has said he has demos for Nevermind in his basement. *shit's self*
