what struck me, though, was how gracious he was toward petty overall. actually, with most of the other artists he talked about, he showed proper respect, i thought. even if he was taking some sort of exception with the artists output, he was still very nice about it. Oh definitely, it really wasn't even a zinger, just a very gentle joshing like "I can't get this Yeah Yeah stuff out of my head"! He was very gracious in all his comments he even took the time to seemingly slam chris mars a little, but then he explained himself & the crowd forgave him ;D

Oh that reminds me, Paul got off a little zinger at Tom Petty's expense, gently mocking the "Yeah Yeah (Yeah Yeah)" chorus of that song and how he had to hear it every damn night on the Petty tour what struck me, though, was how gracious he was toward petty overall. actually, with most of the other artists he talked about, he showed proper respect, i thought. even if he was taking some sort of exception with the artists output, he was still very nice about it.

hmmm. maybe. Who knows ? I do recall reading from a fan post that he gave some fan his leather jacket on the Folker tour. The jacket had a jock strap in the pocket, which Paul took back! Anyone else remember that story? i had never heard that before! but, seriously, that is an awesome story. didn't pw give his grandpaboy hat to letterman? he's a rock & roll johnny appleseed!

i remember reading somewhere that after a show (maybe on the Folker tour?), some fan met him and told Paul he really dug his 12 string fender strat. Paul was ready to give it to him but the fan declined, saying it was too nice of a thing to give away. Paul said something like, it doesn't stay in tune much. I believe it was a black fender with a white pickguard, though, not the one in the pictures Meri posted. i believe it is the same one from the folker shows. sunburst strat. i don't really like strats, but it sounds great.

very nice meri, anyone have a clue on what kind of electric 12 string he's got? i assumed it was a fender strat, but i guess i don't know for sure. he hauled that one out at the pantages shows, and i have sort of been in love with it ever since.

I agree with you on "World Class Fad", I've never been a huge fan of the song but that version of it was a knockout. I used to love the original World Class Fad blindly. Now PW's Craft solo version, combined with Kathy's comment, has spoiled that for me -- in a good way! Just the idea that it is possible to like anything better, along with the existence of something better (PW's new reading) to like, has altered the very structure of the universe for me as defined by the song "World Class Fad." wow. um, i really liked the craft version of the song, but i still love the original version blindly.

re: chris mars
i took it as gentle ribbing, and i think chris is probably laughing somewhere. i honestly didn't think it was malicious.
speaking of mars, did anyone see any luminaries there (l.l., mars, tommy, tommy's mom)?

somewhere, someone mentioned that he played his first act, and i think i just used it once, yes? during the opener, let the bad times roll? i that was it.
ever since the pantages shows, my favorite guitar was his 12 string strat, and after sunday's thing i am more convinced than ever of this matter.

had a great time. loved to hear paul play. reminded me of the guthrie shows mixed in with a little fakebook. pros: "world class fad". a bluesy reading of it, and i loved every second of it. "wad(fan)". different without the electric guitar, but still fantastic. his explanation of why he has to do certain things in order to do the things he wants to do. priceless paul. when someone right away yelled "can't hardly wait" (nevermind, was that you?), he smiled, and said, "later..." cons: TOO QUIET warren zanes mildly sucked. as i described it during the event, while paul was being interviewed, i was conscious of the fact that questions were being asked, and answers were being offered, but the MOMENT paul went to play a song, or after i left i COMPLETELY forgot about the q & a. that might be a function of the fact that the talking volume was entirely too low, but i tend to think it was largely due to the fact that the interviewer was not engaging enough. the beer selection was lacking i mean, i appreciate free as much as the next guy, but come on.

i've been meaning to bring up the flying v. never been a favorite of mine, but his looked good & sufficiently beat up. I wonder where that guitar came from. I don't remember him ever playing it with the Mats or solo, unlike the SG that he smashed during one of the Pantages shows. Seems like it just turned up during the last tour. Looks like it's been well used. could it be bob mould's?

paul's "helper" on the lyrics to "i've grown accustomed to..." was jim boquist. he sat on a chair with his back to the audience as he fed the lyrics to paul. all in all, that song was incredibly touching in a VERY paul way. incomplete, kinda funny, off the cuff, not sentimental in the least. yet, effective & incredibly warm & "real".
paul's "goddamn angel" was goddamned brilliant. i hope it sees the light of day. he played like he meant it hardcore, and it was another intensely beautiful moment that was TOTALLY devoid of sentimentality & predictability, but OVERFLOWING with the kind of warmth that precious few musicians are capable of.
jim boquist also played a little guitar over the course of the evening, too.
marc perlman from the jayhawks was the "house" band bass player, and it was weird hearing marc olsen (formerly of the jayhawks) sing without perlman playing bass with him. i was hoping for a gary louris appearance, and maybe a jayhawks reunion, too, but ah well.
lori barbero absolutely blew me away. the wrong person sang for babes in toyland. let's just leave it at that.
i was REALLY excited to hear zuzu's petals (i had seen them 4 or 5 times "back in the day"). they sounded tentative, but they hadn't played together in 12 years, so that can be forgiven. i was hoping for more than 2 songs, and i would have DEFINITELY preferred to hear another song besides "love bullet" (i was hoping for "do not"), but "god cries" was good. very good.
ll seemed a little uncomfortable talking about the book in front of a crowd. then again, judging by the boughts of crippling stagefright she experienced with zuzu's i suppose that isn't all that surprising. it was a really, really cool environment, though. good theater, and a casual conversation between ll & her sister in law with musicians popping in at the right moments to punctuate the stories. i liked it a lot. mary tosses off funny comments pretty easily, too.
steve wynn sounded GREAT, too. linda pitmon played drums throughout the show, and she sounded great, too. rock solid. paul did, indeed, play drums during a song in the first half.
that's all i can remember at the moment.

man, i take a few days off the board, and this is what i find! kevin, if you weren't a dude, i'd marry you.
i had a nice time talking with you about st. louis park with the aussies outside the bus in memphis.
jim, it was nice speaking with you, too.
michael, never had a chance to speak with you, but from all accounts, you are a fantastic fellow.
paul, i could never meet you. not because of anything negative. i just don't think it would be a good idea. your music has meant to world to me, and seeing this band with you has been a true rock & roll experience.
glad for the 3 shows i saw. still wish i could've done more.
all the best paul & his only friends.

It's not like there's a plethora of places you can go to talk about Paul. In fact, this is the only place you can go to talk about Paul. Except maybe for Mpls. there is a small commune in central new mexico.
