The new - May 2008 - issue of Classic Rock magazine has a buyer's guide to Paul Westerberg, written by Mats fan Phil Wilding The format is the same each issue for a different artist - 2 essential albums, 4 superior, 3 goog and one to avoid, along with an "essential playlist"
The "Essential" albums are 14 Songs and Let it Be Superior: Pleased to meet me; Folker; All Shook Down; and Suicaine Gratifaction Good: Stereo/Mono; Tim; and Don't Tell A Soul Avoid: Sorry Ma...
Playlist... Things; Achin to be; Lets Do it; Waiting for somebody; Alex Chilton; It's A Wonderful Lie (incidentally also the name of Wilding's rarely updated blog); Mamadaddydid; Can't hardly Wait; Bastards of Young; What about mine; Love you in the fall; Within your reach; GOod day; Nobody; Answering machine; Message to the boys; Let the bad times roll; What a day (for a night); Runaway wind; and Here comes a regular.
I'm sure we can all disagree with some of Phil's choices, but a double page spread in the fastest growing music mag in the UK is good - especially a few weeks before the reissues come out.

I can name at least 5 songs on Tim that are superior to anything on all Shook Down. Maybe it's the tinny cd sound of Tim that turns some people off. Hopefully the reissue will fix that problem.

Yeah, that list is interesting. Avoid Sorry Ma? Tim & DTAS side-by-side? I'm a big fan of ASD, but agree Tim is superior. The thing about Tim, even the filler is good.

Based on what I know about Westerberg fans, this seems like a somewhat unusual ranking.. CF

how pleased to meet me and tim are not at the top of the list is mindblowing! and i know i'm going to get alot of crap for this, but i think both tim and ptmm are way better than let it be. don't get me wrong, i love all their albums but on a given day i'd much rather listen to an album like tim.

I think for some people it's which one you heard first. Let It Be was the first Mats I ever heard and I played the crap out of songs like I Will Dare and Answering Machine. I loved Tim's good songs but not so much for the filler. PTMM - I played the crap out of the whole thing and it's probably the one I listen to most. But I will say LIB is the best album as a whole. At the time it just rocked my world because before that I was coming out of a classic/progressive rock phase. LIB was just so emotional and raw. I heard nothing like it before.

Thanks for the article rwinder. It's always interesting to see how other fans rank the records.

I actually find it hard to believe that the author of that article is a "true" fan.
All in all, i think that's one of the worst articles I've ever read on Paul or the 'Mats.
That stuff about disdain for his audience...and the song and album suggestions.
Just too far off to be sincere recommendtions from a seasoned Paul fan, if you ask me.

The thing about Tim, even the filler is good. Lay It Down Clown just left me a message on my Answering Machine and he says to thank you.

That's been a dream of mine for 23 years - that someone could right the wrong Tommy Ramone foisted upon Mats fans.
