Westerberg's been slapping on make-up since the earliest Mats shows. It just means that he's a homelessexual, that's all.

'This is the first record Paul made that sounds like one he'd really want to listen to . . .' after all those records, and the years of growing up with this music, i remember hearing 14 songs for the first time and feeling paralyzed right there in the record store. I never bought it, and I left the store heartbroken and wondering what was wrong with him. it was the first record he made that I didn't want to listen to. I still can't listen to it. I never bought another PW record until stereo and mono, which of course i love.... sorry if that was a boring story. Just wondering what you thought of Dead Man Shake, which to me sounds like an album that only Paul's mother would want to listen to.

I vaguely recall a quote from someone close to Paul (maybe his sister?) around the time 14 was released along the lines of: "This is the first record Paul made that sounds like one he'd really want to listen to . . . with songs like 'Black Eyed Susan' and 'Silver Naked Ladies' back to back." Hm...how is that any different then, say, "Black Diamond" and "Unsatisfied" back to back or "I Don't Know" and "Nightclub Jitters" back to back? Seems to me that he'd been doing that all along.

here is an interesting question that just occurred to me. there is always the question, "what if" in regard to the replacements.... but what about this: what if pw had put out stereo/mono instead of 14 songs at that phase of his career? what would have happened next? Interesting. He got great reviews for Stero/Mono, but I think it would have been the opposite if the album had been his first solo release. It would have felt too much like he was trying to recreate the Replacements sound by himself, and he would have ended up looking silly. "See, I can play drums as good as Chris...whoops, no I can't." On the other hand, if All Shook Down were his first official solo album, then I think there would have been even more raves and much more media attention. It's the best "solo" record he's made.

Never Felt Like This Before sounds like it could have been from SG, Meet Me Down The Alley and What A Day sound like they could have been from around Eventually, etc. Paul said in at least one interview that he found "Never Felt Like This Before" on a tape next to "Self Defense", so he slapped it on the CFMT soundtrack as a little bit of filler. He's also said that "What A Day" was written for someone else during the 14 Songs era.

I must have missed that thread. Did you reach a consensus? I thought it was your thread. Didn't you say the Kinks? I think my answer was that I doubted Paul modeled the Mats after anyone. He may have modeled his hair after Keith Richards and Rod Stewart, and he may have stolen a few poses from Keith and Johnny Thunders, but the Mats were too much the sum of their parts. Even if Paul was a calculating Svengali, there's no way he could have modeled the band after anyone, even if he tried.

I think Folker needs to come out real soon, so torethatbridgeout can come up with some new topics. Didn't we do this one not too long ago?

Of Paul's recent whiny phase this might be his whiniest vocal performance of all. It's fun as a nasally Dylan impersonation for the first minute or so, but it gets pretty irritating by the end of the tune.

"She’s divorced. I’m married. Many are the days I envy her for that alone."
Ouch.
I'm also sorry to read that Paul doesn't receive oral gratification.

Mars had an old set of Slingerland drums and then got a new black set of somethings after PTMM. That reminds me of the Musician article where each band member was asked to list their equipment in a sidebar. When asked what kind of drums he played, Chris Mars just said, "black ones."

It's more like 2 degrees of seperation: Crowe directed the video...Cusack and Crowe are buddies (and isn't the story that John and Joan turned Cameron on to the Mats in the first place?)...Cusack and Piven are buddies and Cusack gets Piven cast in nearly everything he's associated with. It just seems more likely to me that Piven was cast in Crowe's video through the Cusack connection rather than through the more tenuous Larry Sanders connection.

Yeah, I thought that was him too; Another Gary Shandling connection. I think it's a John Cusack/Cameron Crowe connection.

Didn't Bash & Pop have a video??? Man I swear I remember seeing one.....call me wacky, but I would lay a fiver down on it!!! I think it was for "Loose Ends," I could be wrong on the song.....but man I think it was in the usual black and white in some dusty old bar/theater deal..... It was for "Loose Ends", but it was in color, not black and white. It was the dusty old bar deal with Tommy in drag at the bar and performing (sans dress and make-up) onstage with the band.

Ditto. Not only does an MP3 ripped from the DVD sound lousy, but the sound quality on the original DVD was terrible to begin with. We need this tune on a properly mastered CD.

Yeah, he's said it's done, but they could still slap on "Everything Goes Wrong" if that's what you're getting at. I wonder when the hell he recorded all this stuff. He said he recorded CFMT and DMS after coming home from the tour. So did he record Folker before or after that? The timeline seems really tight considering that he claimed Folker was in the can as early as last November.

You're ignoring a key piece of evidence: What Paul has told us about the album. He said in an interview that it was more along the lines of "First Glimmer", adding that there might be a few songs that were slower and maybe one or two that are faster. From that description, we can draw the conclusion that "Folker" isn't going to be a loud rock album. He's also said that the album opens with a one-minute tune that he's hoping will get picked up by commercial advertisers. He said it was his trump card. I'm not sure what to make of that statement, except that he must think it's pretty catchy. Finally, he claimed that there was no filler and that "Folker" is made up of the type of songs that the fans love, which is an odd thing to say considering that there is no general consensus among the fans.

Shit, Shower & Shave has a lot of 'em: " ... if I was from Canada/I'd take all the drugs and send them Federal Express!" I've always wondered if that was a reference to Kim Deal (or was it the other Deal?), who was busted for sending heroin via Federal Express around the same time.

Petty may have learned and swiped the line from PW, but Paul definitely didn't make it up -- someone on this board had a citation a few months ago of where the phrase "rebel without a clue" first appeared, sometime in the 50s or 60s I think ... anyway, it's ancient and I always thot Petty got a bad rap on that one ... Not to mention that Bonnie Tyler had a song called "Rebel Without a Clue" in 1986.

Are you thinking of when he said, "Take it away, Bob," during the solo break on "Swinging Party"? I don't think Tommy ever "took it away" considering the Mats never had any bass solos.
