The post about the Leno show on the outro's thread made me think of this. How about favorite Paul ad-libs?
"Joey and Dee Dee Home" from "Let the Bad Times Roll" on Leno, 02
"What Ever Happened To Paul" parody of "like a Rolling Stone" Irving Plaza August '02.
"Here Comes a Regular, and There Goes a Career" from Get music or Rolling Stone's website.

"we like to hear some guitar, so you can turn 'em up anytime now" i know my choice isn't from a live song but the ad-lib (if it is an-lib i like to think it is one though) during the all or nothing version of I Don't Know, i really like that line.

"Never seen no mountain, 'cept on a six-pack of beer" - From Within Your Reach on Shit, Shower and Shave. When I heard that, I wondered if Busch beer was going to call for an endorsement deal.

Don't remember the song, but at the first solo Guthrie show in the middle of one song he turns his head and says, "Take it away Tommy!"

Are you thinking of when he said, "Take it away, Bob," during the solo break on "Swinging Party"? I don't think Tommy ever "took it away" considering the Mats never had any bass solos.

I saw the Replacements when they toured with Tom Petty in 1989. They played Talent Show and Paul opened with the line, "In my waxed up hair and my painted eyes, Got a big nose you might despise..."

Shit, Shower & Shave has a lot of 'em: " ... if I was from Canada/I'd take all the drugs and send them Federal Express!"

did anyone else see him on that tour w/ Tom Petty? I was told that TP audience was generally not at all receptive to The Replacements, and what should have been their break thru exposure was just more of a disaster, so, Tom Petty uses the line "rebel w/out a clue"...was he just plagiarizing or paying homage?

sorry for not staying on topic. I don't know how else to go about holding what's basically a conversation with rules. perhaps I should have started a new thread?

Just as an observation.
Into the Great Wide open - Tom Petty Original Relesae date: July 2 ,1991
Don't Tell a Soul - The Replacements Original Release date: February 1, 1989
they toured with each other for 8 weeks in spring 1989. (i think)
I never heard Petty say a thing about the Mats or any Influence they may have had on him lyricly or otherwise. Take from this what you want.
2nd fav ad-lib "we're the surfaces ,from Chicago"#nosmileys

I liked that KCRW performance where at the end of We May Be The Ones Paul mutters "I doubt it"

I never heard any bad things about him. It just seems that the mats were put on tour with Petty because he was a real Pro in the business. It was supposed to be a "learning " experience of sorts. They hated it! A little over a year later, one of PW's lyrics is on a Top 40 song. That would make me not wanna play by the A&R guys rules anymore too!

it's pure flattery but at the same time, without the appropriate acknowledgement, i'd be infuriated. suddenly, Tom Petty's surname has potentially taken on a whole new meaning for me.

First time i heard 'never travel far, w/o a little G-n-R' i thought it was quite witty.
"I stand upon this stage, Like a stone on a friggin grave"
i think that's an ad-lib

Petty may have learned and swiped the line from PW, but Paul definitely didn't make it up -- someone on this board had a citation a few months ago of where the phrase "rebel without a clue" first appeared, sometime in the 50s or 60s I think ... anyway, it's ancient and I always thot Petty got a bad rap on that one ...

Not to mention that Bonnie Tyler had a song called "Rebel Without a Clue" in 1986.

Shit, Shower & Shave has a lot of 'em: " ... if I was from Canada/I'd take all the drugs and send them Federal Express!" I've always wondered if that was a reference to Kim Deal (or was it the other Deal?), who was busted for sending heroin via Federal Express around the same time.
