Just got the DVD . What's with the lipstick ? Kinda weird. Overall the DVD is cool. Does anyone know what the line Blacks crackle and drag means ? I know it is from one of her poems but what does it mean ? Even though I don't know I love this song ! Both versions.

Thanks for the link. I was sure It was about the poet. Even in the reviews I have read they say the song is about Sylvia .

Just got the DVD . What's with the lipstick ? Kinda weird. I thought the lipstick was funny. I think he just did it for the hell of it. Kinda weird, yes, but so is taping your shoes and most of those outfits he wears. I don't know if the lipstick is a throw back to the New York Dolls or if he just thought it would be funny and/or weird. Either way I thought it was cool.

I think the lipstick is part of Grandpaboy's image. He wore some on the Letterman show too and the scary pic of Grandpaboy on the Mono cd has him wearing some also. I think it gradually wore off during the show at the Bowery and it's kind of creepy during Skyway with little remnants left. Kind of reminds me of the movie Blue Velvet for some reason.

Westerberg's been slapping on make-up since the earliest Mats shows. It just means that he's a homelessexual, that's all.

Kind of reminds me of the movie Blue Velvet for some reason. There is a passing similarity between Grandpaboy in partial makeup and the depraved Dennis Hopper character, huffing away

It reminded me of Lou Reed for some reason and T-Rex or Marc Bolan

I was surprised so many writers in the papers missed he references to Syvlia Plath. What are they teaching in schools these days?
Does anyone else get unnerved by his constant references to "The End" and suicide?
Call me paranoid but the fact he started drinking again, his dad died, and the death references in his songs unnerving?
I'm so hoping we're not looking at something bad here. But my gut is telling me something is not right here -

Copen, prior to seeing tha DVD I would've agreed with you- the re-current theme of death in the songs, the reclusiveness, the weariness vibe in the interviews. But on the DVD I was pleasently suprised with his energy level, his wit and how he seemed genuinely comfortable with people. I was expecting something much darker and uncomfortable. Instead, what I saw was a guy who seemed pretty well adjusted and having some real fun. Granted, you can't tell what's really going on his head from a DVD that's for public comsumption, but I don't think PW is in the business of rusing his fans. Other things that would lead me to believe he's in a good spot is his surge of creativity- 4 disks (the 4th being "Folker") and a DVD in two years, the fact that he signed with an indie label again, which would seem to imply that he's made peace with not making it big and most of all he now has a son. As far as the passing of his father- the guy was 85 and sick for awhile. I don't know if you saw the obit that was posted on the board, but here it is again. www.legacy.com/StarTribune/LegacySubPage2.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonId=1588444I can't say for sure if PW wrote it, but there is a tone of acceptence and some of that famous wit. I think the guy is in a good place and nobody should worry.

some people have got to stop taking lyrics so literally.

His comments in interviews about not being afraid to reveal himself in songs like "Knockin' Em Back" imply that we should be taking the lyrics literally. I thought he made it pretty clear that those lyrics are based on truth.

yeah i agree we take them literally but not so literally that we read to much into it to the point where you think the worst.

Who said he started drinking again? City Pages: But what about the drinking? Is it a big deal, or has it been a big deal, because you weren't for a long time. Westerberg: Yeah, it's not a big deal. It's like, I'll probably stop again for 10 years and no one will know the difference. I mean, I could've been drinking for the last 15 [years] for all people know. It no longer plays a role in the creative process. I always write [songs] in the day, anyway.
