I wonder if he's written things that he hasn't released because they sound too Matsy. i don't know, but i do know that i would like to hear these tracks if they exist! (oh, and phillip basically answered the thread's original question)

yeah, DD is great, but i didn't love it on first listen. when i heard it played on that opening sequence of the CFMT movie, it made sense i've loved it since. good call. the movie is what made me love it, too.

Was listening to 'Tim' for the millionth time today; casting my vote for 'Hold My Life' i have always adored "hold my life". it seems like it does get left behind when talking about that album, though. good call. other darkhorses might include: "go" "hay day" "we're coming out" (my college band did this one) "i won't" (always loved this one) "bent out of shape" "torture" (what a perfect little song!)

another thread reminded me of this guy, but mike nicolai! his old mpls band, the draghounds, was very, very garage band & thus owed a ton to the mats/magnolias set. his solo work from his now austin, tx homebase ranges from rocking to pensive, is recorded seemingly at home (at least sometimes), etc. i think most people here would like him. if you go to free.napster.com, you can listen to his album, god fatigue in the post-atomic age. that's all that is offered on that site. i have the album, woody allen stunt footage, and that one is outstanding. i am listening online to god fatigue for the first time, and i like it. if you can find cd's by the draghounds (there are 2 that i know of, and they are both the cat's pajamas), get them. good mats-esque rock & roll.

Grand Champeen kicks some serious ass. Check out the bremen riot for now, which is a collaboration between Champeen and Mike Nicolai. They have a myspace page for now, but nothing else. Phil awesome! thanks for the heads up. i have always loved mike nicolai; ever since the draghounds' angel boots & last stop 'til 9th st.. i also have one of his solo records, woody allen stunt footage. i had completely forgotten about him recently, though. i am listening to the myspace songs, and they are basically live (loud) versions of his solo songs. www.myspace.com/thebremenrioti see he will be back in mpls this december. thanks for the heads up. i love being reminded of artists i like & respect.

Never liked Dirty Diesel, and I love CFMT. I always skip it, partially to get to Making Me Go, a far superior track. YOU TAKE THAT BACK ABOUT "DIRTY DIESEL"!!! ;D ("making me go" is a superior track, but i'm not sure it is a superior opener)

i like "baby learns to crawl" but i don't think it belongs at the start of the album. stereo is hard one to kick off, though. i think i would pick "only lie worth telling" or "no place for you".

I don't get why you would think his stuff is less rocking? i'm not playing trying to cause trouble here, i just don't get where these types of comments are coming from. It's not exactly that the rockers are "less rocking"--though he does seem to gravitate more towards midtempo songs these day. i'll go ahead & say it, yes his songs lately certainly are "less rocking" than they used to be. i'm not bashing here. i'm trying to keep it as dispassionate as possible; even though i LOOOOOUVRE rocking paul. take a very rocking recent song like "devil raised a good boy". it rocks harder than most anything that he has put out in this internet age, but it still feels, for obvious reasons, like someone recording all the parts himself at different times. it's been said here, but it bears mentioning again: this approach lends itself to holding back. if you have played with a live rock band & recorded by yourself on a tascam 4 track any time in your life, you know what i mean. "devil raised a good boy" recorded with a band would "feel" better to me (and i already love that track). fuller. there would be better interplay, etc. for the most part his internet releases have been ballads or sort of samey sounding midtempo "rockers" that sort of feel, to me, a little unsatisfying. "dragb" was SUCH an exciting track because it rocked more than we were used to, but overtime i looked at it through the prism of what i said in the previous paragraph. while not an internet release, "everything goes wrong" is another perfect example. when he does cut loose now on full electric rock tracks, he seems to be in mono mode. it was on that release (which i love) that he seems to have largely jettisoned playing guitar in the "chuggachuggachugga" style (sorry, not very descriptive, but maybe you know what i mean) & adopted a more "ringing" classic am rock style. maybe it is maturity, maybe it is just a style that he loves, but for better or worse his "rockers" have all been in that style since mono. i, for one, would KILL to hear an occasional "down love" or "something is me" in with "who you gonna marry", but i think to get a song like those, you need other people involved. i'm just blathering...

can someone please point out to me who else is putting out actual music these days that carry the torch of honesty and anxiousness and regret and actual fun that rock and roll is/was supposed to stand for? check out Lucero's latest, 1372 Overton Park. It's turned me from being a casual fan of the band to being damn near obsessed with them. It's that good. </fanboy> agreed! i hear a lot of soul, rock & roll, boogie, alex chilton & just plain old memphis in that record. it is the real deal, and it smokes. see you on the 23rd at the varsity theater.

We've had complaints about DTS being too polished etc and now complaints about the latest stuff being too rough, unfinished etc. Personally, I'm just glad the man hasn't jumped off a ledge and still has kept it together enough to make real music- rough, polished, kiddy, rockin', depressed or happy, sappy or snappy, melancholy, compromised, alienated, simple, complicated or otherwise. For what it costs us, I'd say there is something for every fan and the price is right. I don't necessarily like all of the last few years output but I sure feel like there's enough there to cover the cost of admission and then some. No complaints here. this is a necessary post to keep in mind at this point. nicely said.

I realized today that "new" Paul has become a lot like another MPLS resident, Prince. this is a comparison i have been mentally making for years now. it has little to do with being mpls based other than the mere curiosity of it, but it is an apt comparison. they both tend to release what they want, when they want, how they want. the differences are that prince actually wants to bring in new fans, and has a professional-grade studio at his disposal so his recordings sound better (a matter of opinion, i know). anyway, yes on the comparison. it fits. they should collaborate somehow. sounds crazy, i know, but this is another thought i have had for years.... just crazy enough to be interesting.

Just to keep the divisive theme of this thread going, I've got a counterpoint to this anecdote. I was in the car with a friend of mine who's a DJ, and we were listening to my recent downloads. Ghost On a Canvas came on and she said, "Who's this"? I told her it was Paul Westerberg and she said, "Whoa, when did he turn into a whiny bitch?" i've had this exact same thing happen; almost to the word. not saying i agree with it, but... ... this is it in a nutshell. we know about the transition, but you, or at least i, can't really fault a casual observer for being jolted by the most recent stuff.

as far as i'm concerned you're wrong. the only way stegman would be "wrong" is if s/he (sorry, never checked) said that 49:00 has no value whatsoever. as a pw board regular (there are no casual pw fans - esp. here), s/he conceivably will always find value & some inspiration in songs that pw releases. it is entirely possible to disagree with a direction pw goes, and still be a gigantic fan. ask my friends. they also like pw a lot, but to them i am a total geek. i find nothing to disagree with that quote by stegman (others may & do), and i think i have laid my opinion out at length on the previous page. for me, it isn't about shrinking from an artistic "challenge". i just happen to think that the songs, most of them (some i do find boring & uninspired, but most are good to great on the pw, not the top 40, scale), are artistic enough without making fans work for them seemingly for the sake of making them/us work for them. in conclusion, big fan, love his work from, what, 1981 - today; just have issues with the direction things have been going for the last couple of years. i don't expect pw to change his ways or you to change your opinion of my opinion, but i'm still going to have it.

if the analogy holds, we should get paul's combat rock soon. yeah and he gets a mohawk, runs a marathon and fires half the band i'd prefer it if paul didn't have a cut the crap, although i would be honestly interested in hearing his "this is minneapolis".
