Was listening to 'Tim' for the millionth time today; casting my vote for 'Hold My Life' i have always adored "hold my life". it seems like it does get left behind when talking about that album, though. good call. other darkhorses might include: "go" "hay day" "we're coming out" (my college band did this one) "i won't" (always loved this one) "bent out of shape" "torture" (what a perfect little song!)

I don't understand the criteria. Does "Date to Church" count? -- It might not help, but it can't hurt . . .

Was listening to 'Tim' for the millionth time today; casting my vote for 'Hold My Life' Love it. He had me at "down on all fives...." haven't thought about this, but I'm going to have to go with Hold My Life too. first mats song i ever heard might be a part of the appeal too. but there are so many that i feel similarly about that my answer might change day to day.

i'm struggling with using "unassuming" to describe a song... Just kinda threw that word out there. I was working backwards from loving "Talent Show," the way it popped into my head and had funny, self-deprecating lyrics that don't seem to call too much attention to themselves. Whatever it means, I agree with many of the above songs being unassuming, and great.

Is "overlooked" part of being "unassuming?"
I'll go with "When It Began" and "I'll Buy" from the Mats era.
From the solo era, it would definitely be "MamaDaddyDid" from Eventually. Lyrically, it's seemingly simple, yet it has a very profound, even bold message. I love how at first it seems as if he's talking about raising a child, but at the end he's talking about himself: "Decided not to raise some mixed-up kid just like my mamamamadaddy did." Great song.

I'll also go with "All Shook Down" (especially the All For Nothing Nothing For All version). So different, so down to the floor. Great lyrics and that sweet little flute-like ocarina along with the capoed guitar -- too cool.

Got to be "Someone Take the Wheel" for me.
"you're so easily amused anywhere you hang yourself is home throw in a tape, fix the tone"
Some days we all need someone to Take the Wheel....

I had a nifty little video mashup of Sarah Palin playing that flute part on YouTube that Wonkette picked up but it's no longer available thanks to WMG.

Standing in the shadows. forever on the brink.... turn it up so I don't have to thiiiiiink I agree this hits the unassuming criteria and that line slays me every time..... sums up what had to be his frustration in being one step out of synch.
