love the idea of PW-internet era = sandinista, if the analogy holds, we should get paul's combat rock soon.

it's been said probably a million times already here & elsewhere, but for whatever it is worth i wanted to add my opinion on 49:00 et al to the mix.
all of the internet stuff (oh, and thanks for the mental image of paul burning cd's at his computer, stegman & tambourine - classic, and probably pretty accurate) is interesting to say the least; especially given paul's stance on such technology (unless that is just a... pose?). i have weighed in on diy v. "professional", but maybe that misses the mark.
this might be the only way paul releases new music to us, and we need to get used to that or move on. i may not agree with it, exactly (i don't - exactly), but this might be the modus operandi going forward. i tend to think it is, actually.
i think there is really, really great material in the internet fever dream we have been in for the last couple of years. there are also some really, really tired & boring songs in there. i don't have a problem with some songs falling short of "devil raised a good boy" or "dgt". throw them all at us, paul. myself, i would rather you employ another set of ears to edit down the output, but shit whatever. i will wade through a few dogs to get to "5:05". happily.
the problem i have is what i hear as willfully sabotaging the output by cramming it together as one track, fading them in & out... yadda yadda yadda. it strikes me as a bit contrived & false. 49:00 seems to be pretty universally loved, and i will get on that train, but with reservations. i just listened to it a couple of days ago, but prior to that i hadn't listened to it in almost a year. i get it. "art" can sometimes be "challenging". whatever. save it. i'm not convinced that i should put aside my annoyances for the art of it all. again, release all of the tracks that are "complete", sure, but give me individual tracks, and take out some of the static.
the same can be said for the other internet songs. record them how you want paul. i would love for you to employ a drummer or a whole band, but it's not for me to say how you should do it. i just wish you would have another set of ears master the tracks prior to release. this is it in a nutshell for me:
1. clean up the willfully placed distractions. 2. individual tracks. 3. minimally mastered.
i would be 100% on board if the internet releases satisfied the above 3 conditions. as such, i am only about 99% on board. i am listening to "bored of edukation" right now, and i think this track comes the closest to fulfilling my conditions, and it strikes me that is why maybe i like it the most; as an individual track. as yet, i haven't even bought the latest one (i will get around to it).
it seems like these internet releases, taken together, might represent paul's sandinista, and i am cool with that. i love sandinista, and i listen to it all the time, but i guarantee i wouldn't as much if i had to swim through all the dub experiments & choral versions of clash songs to get to "police on my back" or "charlie don't surf".
it probably sounds like i am bitching & moaning, but i hope not. i think i have proven my fan cred over the years. i just hear potential greatness in 49:00 et al, and it pains me not being able to commit to it 100% because it almost seems like paul hasn't committed to it 100%. soul asylum has a song called "99%", and maybe paul only needs me & me him "99% of the time..." if that is the case, i honestly am ok with that. he has given me so much over the years, and i am cool with the arrangement. still, i *know* this recent stuff could rock me more, and for that matter knock a lot more eardrums into paul's camp.
i'd love to see it happen, for paul. he deserves it. if he really, truly doesn't want that, i take this whole post back.

i took a spin through the samples monday, but i haven't purchased it or listened to them anymore.
my first reaction was disappointment. or maybe, as has been described here (quite accurately, i think), it was boredom. there was one song only that "rocked", and i think that is worrisome.
i'll post more when i have more... i mean, of COURSE i am going to buy it now, buy it. for the moment, i suspect i am going to remain somewhat bored by the release in the same way i have been bored by everything since 'folker' (and some of that, too).
basement tape perfection was reached w/ s/m & cfmt. s/m are front to back stunners, and cfmt is probably better (if s/m were just m). i, for one apparently, really liked open season (not the movie), but i'm not sure it counts as an example of recently polished paul.
i will always love 'runaway wind' as much as i love 'making me go', and i like the idea someone had previously about getting an actual band in the basement along with a crappy producer as a middle ground. what's tommy ramone doing these days?
it pains me to feel boredom in the face of a paul release when i used to feel such extreme joy & giddyness.

that absolutely sucks about the uptown. i saw many great shows there: babes in toyland, tommy, perfect, etc etc.
plus the food was good. fuck gentrification.

their version of "black diamond" has one of my favorite moments of mats-dom. after the quiet intro, you can actually hear the hum of volume knobs being turned up. real deal, yo.

couple of comments on some of the suggestions (most are great, btw).
mike ness - yes! let paul do all the lyric writing, please. ness would help paul bring the rock, though, that's fo' sho'.
pete townsend - i thought about it, but i don't think it would work, and i am not sure why. i DO know that a pairing of bob mould & townsend would be the witch's tits (a good thing). speaking of mould...
bob mould - no. i just don't see it working, and it has nothing to the old baggage of being in competing bands either. just something about their styles clashing in a bad way. then again, i suggested prince (and i still do!)...
slash - would this be to get back at tommy and/or axl? either way, i am intrigued. call their band "sandpaper dagger".
aimee mann - oh holy shit yes. too bad she already has an album called "i'm with stupid" because that would be a great name for a 50/50 mann/westerberg album. inspired.
new suggestions from me...
dan wilson (because he JUST came up on my ipod) dwight yoakam ken stringfellow scott mcgaughey jon auer david and/or serge bielenko amy ray rivers cuomo matthew ryan atmosphere

paul & prince? you gotta admit you're intrigued...
paul & carole king? i think it could be wonderful.
paul & joan jett? i have looooooong advocated this pairing for a full album.
paul & elvis costello? again, intriguing, but i think that one of them would end up murdering the other.

Poor Paul still ended up getting dissed by fans who wanted the full raucus power of the Mats, and he didn't even have the compensation of getting stinking rich from a more radio-friendly record. the curse of the replacements! the curse of the replacements!

related to the original post/question, my wife & i are coming up on our 1st wedding anniversary (thank you, thank you), and we are putting together a vol. 2 (year one) cd, to be given out to friends & family.
you can bet westerberg/mats will be on it.

i echo some of smorg & keith's comments... "nobody" really IS a bad choice, and it is totally YOUR day. eff everyone else. i mean, use your better judgement, but people should be catering to you; not the other way around.
i got [re]married last may, and "i will dare" was sort of our thesis statement. we had an awesome band that did their own thing, so i didn't have to pick out a ton of music. i did make a giveaway wedding cd full of songs that mean a lot to us, and our relationship. we included tracks from:
massive attack mats marah sade screeching weasel etta james
etc. etc.
if i do say so myself, i put together a pretty winning mix. just the other day, we were over at her parents house, and her dad was in the garage doing what middle aged dads do in their garages, and we heard the smooth sounds of massive attack's "protection" coming from the boombox out there. one of their friends went to a concert by the band (also on the cd) as a result of being exposed to them at the wedding. the point is, done correctly bringing in GREAT music into a decidedly BAD music scene pays off in the end.
i'll tell you one thing, my mom never listened to screeching weasel before my wedding!
