Can you think of any PW solo songs that would sound at home on a Mats album? I can't.

While an album of Paul's solo songs wouldn't fit as a mats album, most of the individual songs would be able to fit in. There were many songs on 'mats albums that were basically paul solo songs anyhow, and when you included some of the new material from the reissues, we get more of these songs that are still called Replacements songs.
I think Paul's solo catalog is different from the 'mats, but most of the songs have a similar feel. Obviously some of his more recent songs probably wouldn't have been written when he was in his 20s, but that's a side issue, as the music still has a similar feel to it.

Hmmmm. You know when I read this title I pulled all of Paul's solo stuff to try and see if I could picture them as Mats songs. Can you really say what defines Matsyness though? I mean they went from "Take Me Down to the Hospital" and "Run It" to "Nightclub Jitters" and "Portland". I think it might be hard to picture some of the stuff on a Mats album because a lot of us now see Paul as the introspective, do-it-yourself, basement guy. What's to say any of his solo stuff couldn't take on a life of its own when 3 or 4 guys get together and start f'n around. I think I could easily see Bob busting out a rip roaring solo during "Pine Box" or Tommy singing back up on "Dice Behind Your Shades".

I wonder if he's written things that he hasn't released because they sound too Matsy.

I wonder if he's written things that he hasn't released because they sound too Matsy. Didn't Paul fire Brendan O'Brien from producing Eventually because he was trying to turn the album into a Mats-sounding one? I agree with Philip. I think a lot of the songs from Mono could fit in on a Mats record--"Let's Not Belong," "Two Days 'Til Tomorrow" for starters. In fact, when that record was released there was a lot of speculation in these parts that Tommy and maybe Slim and Chris did in fact play on the album.

Every day this board edges that much closer to the Hornby novel.
