let me just say that no one, no one, should be slagging on the clash.
that said, what it comes down to is finesse, dig? if political songs are done, and done well, they are good songs. if they aren't, they fuckin' suck. period. dylan's "hurricane" is definitely a socio/political song, and it still makes me well up with tears when i hear it. read: it has emotional impact as an artistic statement, and is a good song.
to me, it is totally against the roots of rock & roll to say that musicians shouldn't give voice to social issues. rock & roll is protest music, people.
"everybody smash up your seats & rock to the brand new beat..."
not every rock & roller should be a political slinger, because not every musician is good at nuance, substance, and delivery.
that's the way i see it.

Chistopher Walken in Man on Fire "A man can be an artist in anything, food, whatever. It depends on how good he is at it. Creasy's art is death. He's about to paint his masterpiece." that's a great movie.

I would call it art. But I agree we should keep that fact from the actual musicians otherwise you end up with too much Yes and not enough Ramones. valid illustration!

I don't know if rock n roll is art or not, but I think rock music must be prevented from viewing itself as Art at all costs. valid point.

i think people worry too much about labels. be it rock & roll (and its subsets), "art", etc.
you know it's art when you hear/see/taste it. what we are worrying ourselves with is whether or not others hear/see/taste the same art, and that seems a bit silly to me.

Is rock n' roll art? Is Paul an artist? totally.

i absolutely second the suggestions about recording with his only friends, and doing austin city limits or vh1 storytellers.

I going to have to say that's a tie with "You Swallowed WHAT?" and "Skinned Alive". wait, these aren't real shows, right? when is the show on where they just go around slitting peoples' achilles tendons at random?

They have a show called "Face Eating Tumor" so anything is possible. there are a couple of directions that show could go. they are equally disgusting.

i'll buy it the day it comes out, and piss off if you don't like that answer.
edit: that came out way harsher than i had intended. i will be buying it the day it comes out. $12 is a fair price for good packaging, and those three songs. i have paid more for less before.
oh, and no more spoilers about the liner notes!

although it would be funny to have an album called "14 songs" with only 12 or 13 songs on it. kind of like when dillinger four started out as a 3 piece.

For when we leave: Can't Hardly Wait hold on. which version? i made mix cds for my sister's wedding (the cocktail hours part - pre dinner). i put all manner of lyrically inappropriate songs in the mix. hell, i even through some nick cave from "murder ballads" on there. i was going for an overall sound, and i didn't worry about lyrics. most the aforementioned paul songs turned up in there, too. after dinner, the groom got up & played waitress in the sky & little red corvette on acoustic in front of everyone. nice surprise for everyone.

Fugazi still charge $5 for their shows, I believe. Plus, Ian MacKaye has got his own indie record label so he has another way of making a living besides just the band. right, right... what i am saying, i guess, is that these guys have always, and i'm assuming, will always live with integrity. this is a rare, rare thing. most people buckle eventually. i'm thinking of the clash songs in recent car commercials. the fugazi guys have houses, kids, volvos.... quite inspiring if you ask me.

I don't want to trot out the old Fugazi analogy yet again, but it's true. if you didn't do it, i would have. dirty little secret: fugazi, while not rich, have carved out a nice living for themselves. the drive volvos & everything.

This is a very simple (and overlooked - by me anyway) point. I mean, look at all of us when we get together. Okay, there hasn't been much breaking stuff. Yet. But we're all pretty much doing the same thing. That lucky bastard. "you learn to love the highway when you're home, and love home when you're away..." marah

i might take mild issue with calling "eventually" a lyric-based title. sure, it's a word in a song, but to me a lyric-based title is a song of the same name, or a major line from a song.
not only that, but "something is me" isn't even ON eventually... ;D
all that said, i consider eventually to be a concept title; based on the feeling on the majority of songs (sans trumpet clip) have a whispy, nostalgic yet looking forward feeling to them.... eventually is a perfect title. to me, it is a conceptual title.
sorry to keep going on eventually, but.... it is to me, if not my favorite record, an incredibly consistent album. "eventually" perfectly sums up the emotional impact for me.
