Yeah, the painting analogy doesn't really work when there are so many layers of production to music recording that have nothing to do with the original performance. Paul says that nobody in the band was even in town when Dickinson put the horns on Can't Hardly Wait. And then you have every interview with Dickinson where he talks about having to piece together Paul's takes in a Fairlight sampler just to cobble together a coherent song. And while Dickinson was secretly patching together Paul's vocals, Paul was talking about how they recorded over Chris's drum parts with sampled beats.

Like, imagine if Martin or Steve Albini got their mitts on Tim or Hootenanny... I think Hootenanny sounds great, but just with an inconsistent sound overall. On the other hand, I predict that nearly everyone will answer Tim to your question. No doubt it could use a remix/remaster. I know Paul has said that the problems with Tim were in the studio and not in the mix or master. In this interview, he says that one of the speakers on his amp was blown and he thinks that's the one that was miked. PAUL WESTERBERG: THE MAN WHO WASN’T THERE

2009, Sydney, which means he was probably strung out. Notice how he was fully invested in the song until the "tired of getting high/guess I don't want to die" line came up and then he got goofy in order to compensate.

And yes, it is Westerberg High School. Spelled "Westerburg High School."

That's a mash-up of different shows. The full Inconcerated set remains unreleased. We only have 5 songs.

As a self proclaimed 'superfan' of the Mats you should probably know that the motivating factor in the reunion was Slim. Most of the profits from that tour went to help with his medical bills. Songs for Slim raised a lot of money, but I don't think Paul or Tommy ever said anything about donating their profits from the reunion tour to Slim.

...and short of one of the members writing their own book... Chris has an unpublished memoir. It's used as a reference in Michael Azerrad's Our Band Could Be Your Life. See page 199.

Personally, if I had a boat and was gonna give it a Mats inspired name it would be Shiftless When Idle Gary's Got a Boat

I’ve also heard rumors that Westerberg and Winona had a thing (which he seems to adamantly deny, from what I’ve heard) but had no idea it was related to this song. It's covered in Trouble Boys. Ryder said that they bonded and hung out at the tail end of her relationship with Johnny Depp. She also said that it made Depp jealous, which was probably half the point. Paul is quoting as telling her, "Everyone thinks we had this thing. Why didn't we just have it?"

... like, yeah, he turned into a bit of jerk, but I might be too in his positionWell, he didn't really say that. He said he was no different than all the other people that Paul has been a dick to.

Portland came first, but it didn't make the cut, so Paul appropriated the "It's too late..." part for Talent Show. I think there's an interview with Paul where he says it was the only good part of the song (Portland, that is).

Well at least this year's round of "Anarkissed tries to get people to talk about the RRHOF and then gets drunk and angry" managed to hit all the major points in the least amount of posts. That's a wrap. We'll see you all again next year!

A viewing of The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is pretty key to understanding Paul's thoughts on this too. "When those questions turn to whether he has always identified with the noble loser, Westerberg replies that he relates to the title character of an old British movie, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. In the movie, the main character is a working-class kid who is thrown into prison only to have the penitentiary officials coddle him – banking on his ability to win a cross-country race against a prestigious prep school. The runner, however, has a different idea. "I'm going to let them think they have me house trained," he says. "But they never will, the bastards. To get me beat they'll have to stick a rope around my neck." Nearing the finish line, our anti-hero, clearly the most talented runner, stops just shy of the victory tape, stares at the prison warden with a piercing smile and lets the rest of the field finish in front of him. "It affected me that he won the race for himself but he wasn't about to win it for the cause or for the team that he never felt a part of," says Westerberg. "But I get the feeling the record company doesn't expect me to go all the way. If I place or I show, that's good enough." www.rollingstone.com/music/features/the-rolling-stone-interview-paul-westerberg-19930624

I'd rather jump in a wheelbarrow of fire ants than watch a DBT video. But you sure did go digging deep to find some lyrics to completely misrepresent.

'He's not full of crap on any level' And he is sensitive and progressive too: "Keep you pregnant all the time" "...who needs to be liberated?" Yep, women dream of being constantly impregnated and are fine with the terms of patriarchy. Sorry in advance if I'm just missing the sarcasm in your post, but if you're serious, then you're confusing fictional characters with Hood's personal beliefs. In the same song that you pulled the "pregnant" lyric from, Hood sings, "Son, here's a loaded gun, try not to hurt no one." Now go back and watch that video of Guns of Umpqua on the previous page and you'll see that Screwtopia is from the POV of a satirical character.
