For some reason, I find the this song incredibly catchy, in a good way.
Anyone know why he wrote it or if he’s referring to someone specific? It almost seems like he has to be.

There was some speculation that it was Winona Ryder...

Funny, I was visiting family yesterday, lots of musicians amongst us, and we were messing around and jamming for a bit. "Silent Film Star" was one of my picks for us to play around with. Seems this thread was started right around the time we were playing this! Fantastic song, and I have also heard the Winona rumor. Got nothing to back that with, though.

I’ve also heard rumors that Westerberg and Winona had a thing (which he seems to adamantly deny, from what I’ve heard) but had no idea it was related to this song. It's covered in Trouble Boys. Ryder said that they bonded and hung out at the tail end of her relationship with Johnny Depp. She also said that it made Depp jealous, which was probably half the point. Paul is quoting as telling her, "Everyone thinks we had this thing. Why didn't we just have it?"

In a San Francisco newspaper interview after the Mats, the interviewer humorously touched on the Ryder Factor:
Q: Speaking of which, did Winona Ryder steal anything from you when you were seeing her?
A: Steal anything? My time.
Q: I guess that's worth more than $5,000 at Saks.
A: Yeah, I guess so.
When he played an in-store in Los Angeles, it was rumored at the store that he called ahead to specifically request Ryder to be kept away.
She became a rock 'n' roll punchline in the 80s and 90s, perhaps the most well-known and notorious groupie. And it seemed to all center around Westerberg. One can see Dave Pirner, Ryan Adams, Rhett Miller, etc were all attempts to approximate Westerberg. It was humorous that their "relationship" was mentioned in the book. But it seemed decades earlier, he was annoyed by the Ryder connection.
