Here are your inductees for 2018:
Bon Jovi: It's like putting Journey in there...I can't quibble, but I turn my head and pretend I didn't know about it...
• The Cars: The bullet points added when I control V'd...?...I liked them and hated them in about equal measure...That's a pretty good sign...If I just hated them, I was probably wrong...If I just liked them, I was probably biased...
• Dire Straits: This is one of those bands that I never really liked or listened to on my own, but I respected them...Mark Knopfler is not just a great guitarist, but really unique...If I had to name another guitarist who sounds like him, I'm not sure I could...Wes Montgomery?
• The Moody Blues: Slam dunk...I fight the good fight for prog rock...Still holding out for Emerson, Lake & Palmer...
• Nina Simone: Recognized the name, but, otherwise clueless...
Again, I discourage blather about how the RRHOF is a sham, and a travesty, and a joke, and about how there should be separate wings for rap and country...But I always invite that guy who skewered me when I ranted about Sam Moore...That shit was funny as fuck...I also like to invite discussion about those overlooked...The Replacements are kinda obvious...But the New York Dolls, T.Rex and Mott the Hoople are leading my list these days...

Serious, who gives a single fuck about the RRHOF? It is on an even level as the MTV Awards and TV Choice Awards. Prove me wrong. Thank God guys like Van Morrison and Johnny Rotten said fuck it, it is stupid industry bullshit. And I would think in my heart that Westerberg would say the same thing.

yeah, I'm gotta say the HOF thing just isn't something I care about. In fact, any award show, really.
The only thing I may care about are the performances of someone I'm interested in. Otherwise, it's the self congratulatory stuff and the industry creaming all over themselves in hopes it'll boost record sales of someone's back catalog.
I remember that Neil Young said in some interview (and I can't find it) back in the early 90's that the HOF should really just shut down and wait awhile. He said the original pioneers and bluesmen should definitely be in there, but then shut it down and see what else emerges. And I'm kind if paraphrasing it, but he said something like otherwise, once you've run out of inductees, there is pressure to keep it going and it turns into something crass.

I specifically said "No blather"...Who gives a fuck? I do...That why there's this thread...Apparently, deep down, you do, too, or otherwise you wouldn't have read this post and bothered to respond...Here's why I care: Once a year, a discussion is floated about bands and artists from the past...It'd be kinda weird if I just randomly said: "What about The Moody Blues?" (Although I guess I could; what's stopping me?) But the fig leaf of the Hall makes me look somewhat less deranged...I said I didn't know anything about Nina Simone, and someone went to the trouble of pointing me in the right direction...Also, the families of these people get to dress up, and show up, and watch their little brother inducted into something that kinda seems like a big deal, and maybe finally understand why he didn't take that apprenticeship to become a chartered accountant...This whole deal about artistic integrity and how it's not a beauty contest and so on...That made a lotta sense to me when I was about 19 and I thought Marxism was the wave of the future, but that was about fifty fucking years ago, and now I'd kinda just like to see the Talking Heads reunite for four songs...People who have condescended to participate in this charade include Pete Townshend, Keith Richards, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, R.E.M., the surviving members of Nirvana and Neil Young...I guess they have less character than you...By the way, Van Morrison and John Lydon are two of the biggest dicks in the history of popular culture...I forgive John Lydon, because he is funny as fuck, and his dickness was a shtick...Van Morrison was just a dick...I love everything he did with Them..."Astral Weeks" and all that shit is garbage...I'll listen to "Domino" if I'm really, really drunk, but otherwise, fuck him...Yep...It's that annual pissing contest where somebody wants to prove they are cooler than me...Congratulations...You win...When does that new Fugazi album come out?

Well at least this year's round of "Anarkissed tries to get people to talk about the RRHOF and then gets drunk and angry" managed to hit all the major points in the least amount of posts. That's a wrap. We'll see you all again next year!

Well at least this year's round of "Anarkissed tries to get people to talk about the RRHOF and then gets drunk and angry" managed to hit all the major points in the least amount of posts. That's a wrap. We'll see you all again next year! But I wasn't drunk this year (See thread: "Drinking"). I just wished I was. (Although last Tuesday, I drank 24 ounces of Robitussin...I wasn't angry, because I didn't have a body, and concepts like "anger" seemed like a bourgeois conceit and those floaters you sometimes see out of the corner of your eye were forming into big, soft pillows and blankets and whimsically grazing my eyes...When I reached out to touch them, they evaporated.) It was pretty efficient. Thank you all for playing. (By the way: "tries to get"? You did...Whoops! You look forward to this every year more than I do!) This year, I'm going to exemplify my colossal ignorance by referencing T-Bone Walker...I maintain that T-Bone Walker is the most underpaid, under appreciated performer in the entire history of rock and roll...I expect a full report wherein you show me that T-Bone Walker "got paid", and was the one guy (aside from Sam Moore) who outwitted legions of crooked agents and lawyers and record companies and con men and shills and semi-attractive whores and the Mafia and made a fortune and provided for his grandchildren and bought French horns for every junior high orchestra in Georgia...(Yeah, I know; he was from Texas...I just threw that in there so you could call me on it...If you do, I'll go back and edit this part out.) By this point, you're probably asking yourself: "Doesn't this guy have anything better to do?" No, not really...You know I only do this out of love, right? The one thing I do regret is we can no longer have that discussion about whether KISS should be in there or not...I'm never really angry...I just pretend for effect...

Here is the thing about the Rock and Roll HOF. It has some bands that I consider to be absolute trash in there. Journey and the like. But if a band like Journey is in, then Bon Jovi belongs, Phil Collins belongs, And the Replacements do not, which is fine. Uncle Tupelo doesn't belong. Wilco does not belong. Rage Against the Machine doesn't belong. Those are bands that I love but that don't have the mass appeal- no matter how good their music is or how innovative they may have been- to get into the HOF. THEM GETTING INTO THE HOF or not has no bearing on their appeal to me. I will use a hockey analogy to make my point. Mike Gartner was renowned for his ability to score goals (40+ a year) during the regular season as well as for his ability to disappear during the playoffs. Mike Gartner is a Hall of Famer and I would never have wanted him on my team (similar to Journey playing on radio/phone/Spotify). On the other side is a guy named Rob Dimaio. He was a smaller center who was tough as nails, played physically, fought whenever he felt it was needed, strong defensively, and popped a few goals in every year. Nowhere near a HOF worthy player. But I would want him on my team every single time (similar to the Replacements on my radio/phone/Spotify) before I would take Gartner.

I thought you were gonna lose me with a hockey analogy, but that was pretty much perfect... I'm glad that made sense to somebody. I'm a long suffering Caps fan....I know EXACTLY what you're talking about! Caps have needed more blood and guts types in the past few years than highly skilled players who refuse to go to the net and fight for the puck. But I digress.....I don't take much of anything here personally. If you dig it, great. I am only interested in any musical performances done at the ceremony. And I wish I could find that Neil Young quote. He said it was worth it to see these old pioneers, old bluesmen being validated and Young said he found that to be moving. He could see that meant a lot to these men and women who were ignored or did not reap the financial benefits at all. So I can get behind that. I can't get behind someone like Ted Nugent whining about why he isn't in the Hall. That is the stuff that turns me off.

We all know it's a flawed institution in many ways, and the whole concept of a special club for the most deserving is something to scoff at, but I still think it's fun to discuss and debate the merits, process, and decisions.
Part of the discussion has to entail putting your personal feelings about a band aside. I am at best indifferent to Journey and really don't like Bon Jovi at all, but both are obvious picks to me. Bon Jovi is one of the biggest bands of the last 30 years. Their last four albums alone have gone to number one. They've had a ton of top 10 hits. Of course they get in. How anyone would say Journey doesn't belong in is lost on me. These bands are huge.
The Cars were one of the most successful new wave bands. They had a ton of hits. They had groundbreaking videos. They were also great musicians. They rose above their peers, many of who petered out after one hit. I was glad to see them get in.
Moody Blues for sure. Dire Straits - this one seems a little frivolous to me while there are better bands waiting, but I'm not bothered by it.
I was bummed that Judas Priest and MC5 didn't get in. I was hoping MC5 would get the "cool" vote, like Big Star and Tom Waits did. Hard Rock and especially metal has been so ignored.

Everybody always says they don't care, but they seem to want to explain why they don't, and I think people who really, really hate it still enjoy discussing it...I really have little interest in the criteria for judging who "deserves" induction; I just like talking about old bands...The difference between something like this and The Grammys, for example, is that we're not going to be talking about people like The MC5 and Judas Priest during The Grammys...

I am boycotting this sham until stellar acts like Right Said Fred and Nelson are inducted. As a tangent, one of the funniest--and yet cruelest--record reviews I've ever seen was a one word review of a Nelson record in Musician Magazine. The review was: "Why?"

Other harsh reviews:
The Cars - Panorama 'The Cars run out of gas' Spinal Tap - Shark Sandwich 'Shit Sandwich' (Okay this one is fictional but funny as hell anyway)
Speaking RRHOF, is Gram Parsons in?
