It was kind of the ugly stepchild of Suicaine Gratifaction. Has time changed anyone's opinion? It's a bit of an abstract mood piece where the listener is an observer and makes their own mental picture of what's going on as opposed to a universal sentiment.
Paul's gift is conveying universal (or at least communal) sentiments that are obvious once they're heard, but may have only been a personal feeling that wasn't registered consciously or socially before. Then you're like..."yay!" when you hear it. So anyway, maybe Actor In The Street only speaks to PW or it's meant for the listener to find their own meaning or no meaning if it be the case.
Of course maybe it's as simple as you don't care for the singing, production, etc.

I'm not a fan of it at all. I find Suicaine much more palatable as a piece of music without it. That album is definitely underrated, but for my tastes, I just had to let that tune go.

I'd take it over Sunrise Always Listens.

Like it? Hmmm. I guess I do like most/all aspects of the song except for the lyrics. It hasn’t connected with me at all lyrically. Probably one the few Westerberg I’d say that about. I don’t skip it when it plays.

I thought Suiciane had 3-5 really, really great songs on it - some of his best from those first three solo records, and also a great sound overall, but the majority of the record (including Actor in the Street) was tired, uninspired, and self-indulgent. It would have made a great EP.

Years ago an MWT poster laid out the theory that it’s about Bob Stinson. It was an interesting idea that made the dong more meaningful for me

I'd take it over Sunrise Always Listens. Not a fan of Actor in the Street. Tough song to connect to for me. That said, I love Sunrise Always Listens. Sounds like a man on the edge of insanity. A song Roger Waters wishes he wrote.

Don't think Paul is at his best when he's role-playing, like in "Actor in the Street." The emotional heft just isn't there. That said I love the cello in this song and wish there was another album or two of PW songs like this, production-wise.

Yeah, I gotta say, just can't get into Actor. The melody doesn't interest me at all. It may have been an interesting lyric/word thing for Westy to write, but he had no melody for it.
I can tolerate Sunrise and don't find the urge to skip past it. and lyrically it seems to work better for me than Actor

Not a fan of that song. Not a fan of Bookmark or Sunrise either. I guess I can get not liking Bookmark, but as a guy who has worked with largely underprivileged children without active fathers for the last twenty years, that song hits the nail on the head.

Suicaine is like half of a great album. The other half is dirge-like and depressing;Actor in the Street being a great example.
