Here's why I picked Trumpet Clip over Angels Walk...
Trumpet Clip is not a strong enough song to stick in the middle of 6 downbeat tracks,as it is on Eventually, but it is a good momentum builder if placed properly. It's a great groove.
Angels Walk = grating guitar riff, vague non-revelatory lyrics, deliberate forced over-phrasing,Brendan O'Briens very annoying bass work.It seems like they failed to capture whatever it was they were going after. It's an interesting b-side that shouldn't have cracked the album. It's like Paul put it on there to throw Brendan O'Brien a bone after he(Paul) pulled the plug on their sessions.

I made my own Eventually.
Here it is...
1.These Are The Days 2.Stain Yer Blood 3.Trumpet Clip 4.Love Untold 5.Once Around The Weekend 6.You've Had It With You 7.All That I Had 8.Aint Got Me 9.Century 10.Hide N Seekin' 11.C'mon,C'mon,C'mon 12.Good Day
I picked from the 19 Eventually era trax available and keeping with the album length of 12 songs I put together a song cycle that I really like.Tracks 1-6 kind of document frustration and maybe a desire to withdraw without sacrificing personality while tracks 7-12 are more confessional while highlighting diverse songcraft. It flows. The songs speak to one another. It seems like a blueprint for commercial singer songwriter albums.
Nothing against the songs not picked. They either lost the plot or disrupted the flow for me.
Here's the rest...
Sunshine MamaDaddyDid Let's Do It Angels Walk Once Around The Weekend(Alt. Version) Make You're Own Kind Of Music Time Flies Tomorrow
Eventually has never sat well with me but I don't want to dismiss the whole batch of songs. The more PW I enjoy the better! This track list is now Eventually to me!More tight and focused and less meandering.I'm actually digging the production too!
I guess if you like Eventually and wonder what someone who doesn't like Eventually wish it sounded like, this may be it.And if you don't like Eventually(and you have the means)try out this track list.Maybe you'll dig it.

I checked out the myspace. When I heard the line "Tramps like us we were born to die" in one of the songs that was enough for me.No thanks.

It just seems that he doesn't like it when his albums fail. I've never heard a PW album that failed. Give Eventually a listen!

To me it just seems a diservice to him as an artist not to be represented better whether he's dead or alive or putting out albums or touring or not. There's just many facets to his career with The Replacements, solo work,Grandpaboy, soundtracks, his huge influence on many other artists.I wouldn't expect him to be personally involved the way Lou Barlow is on his Loobiecore site.Just to have an insightful representation of who he is on a few web sites could go a long way.People don't make mix tapes anymore they say "check out this guys Myspace."All that being said, this site has gone above and beyond serving him and his fans well through the years. How are people going to know to get off the computer and "Go out and sit in a field sometime" if they don't get the message!"Retired" or not,it's just a good way of being informative, and if he ever does do anything it's a good way to create a buzz.
BTW if there was a PW songbook I think this place would be as good as any to make a poll of the top 50 PW songs to put in the book.I don't know if you'd split it up with half being Replacements songs and half solo or have seperate books.Who knows?Ideally each album would have it's own book, but odds are that aint happening.

CFMT just seems like a perfect fit for IFC.Why wasn't Paul ever on the Henry Rollins show? That would have been "must see" tv.

It just seems that he doesn't like it when his albums fail.So much so now that it appears the album format isn't very appealing to him.Which totally sucks for fans.It seems every time he releases an album he needs to be re-introduced to the public as being this legendary songwriter.Maybe if that info was readily available for people to find out about on their own instead of having it pushed on them when he's promoting something he'd get a better response. Also I'm sure people who hear about him via an album promotion would turn to Myspace, etc. to check him out on their own and verify if he's something they're into. It's not like the old days where people read a good review and are swayed to buy an album, now the record buying public wants to do their own sleuthing to find out if they like the artist before they part with their money.I'm sure it kind of deflates any type of promotion or hype when someone realizes this Paul Westerberg guy doesn't even have a Myspace account(One that is connected to itunes). Some people might not know how to buy an album any other way.All it is is like having a press release available to the public and it gives people easy options to purchase. It would be cool if he'd stream an album prior to it's release as well. I'll know when he releases something because it's something I keep an eye out for,but it would be nice if a release could be anticipated by being promoted with official updates and teasers up until the release. The Come Feel Me Tremble movie was great. There should be clips of that readily available on an official site somewhere. An artist page like this one is where the hardcore fans go,but casual fans go to the sites that they themselves are apart of.I'm reminded of the "Label wants a hit and we don't give a shit" line.An artist can do so much more by doing so much less now days. You would think that would appeal to Paul.

Is Westerberg against having a Myspace page,Twitter account, Facebook page, or Youtube channel? You would think any type of management would have all these in place for both Paul and The Replacements.Reguardless of his personal computer use,it is a way to reach millions of people and it's very simple to do.It would be nice to have them all linked to this page.

I've been thinking about this for the past few days, and I call bullshit. Why Poor Paul Westerberg for a title on this pic? And why the subsequent attacks on the guy wearing the shirt? Because he doesn't meet some screwed-up preconcieved notion of what a 'mats fan should look like? Is his hair too surfer-ish to be worthy of a Westerberg fan? Hell, before I started going bald, my blonde Jew-fro somewhat looked like that (I hated it, wanted to have straight black hair). Is it his posture? Not slouched hip enough? Is he of the wrong body type to be a Westerberg fan? Not skinny enough? Hell again, I'm the first generation of men in my family not to have worked in a coal mine in 150 years, but the genetics gave me a 260 lb body that has me looking pretty much like Goldberg (without the steroids) and I can lift heavy things repeatedly - does that mean I don't qualify for Westerberg fan status? Is it because he's not showing enough angst? Not enough depression? Not enough self-doubt? Or wait, is it because he doesn't look like someone "real" Westerberg fans would hang out with? Is that it? The ol' "He's not one of us, he can't possibly understand what we're about..." Got it. Pathetic. It's not what he looks like,it's who he is.He works for TMZ which is some celebrity gossip show. When people like Corey Haim die it's a great day for him.If he is a fan that's cool, just seems like an odd crossover.Like Clay Aiken wearing an NWA shirt or something. It's calculated for hipster cred.Odds are he wouldn't recognize a Replacements song if he heard one. That's cool though I guess. No law against it.

Maybe theres a different feel to them when Tommy is involved because Love You In The Fall has a Mats feel to it compared to other solo PW songs built on riffs.I like it when Paul lets a chord ring out while Tommy thumps away on the bass-lines(Message To The Boys)It makes the guitars sound big. It's like a slight of hand thing that gives the songs a distinct feel, mood, atmosphere.
Devil Raised A Good Boy is great.I can only imagine that song live!Be Bad For Me is great.I have not heard Wild As I Wanna Be by Paul.
There's sort of a PTMM energy to the more recent collaborations between Tommy and Paul or maybe a rawer more rocking 14 Songs feel.I really like it.It's good to know that if they ever meet up downstream to make a record they will have a great sound.I hope they do it just to make a ripple so other bands will try to cop to that sound.Because alot of the production and music and singing and writing on modern rock records is not good.
I Will Dare,Talent Show,The Ledge,Answering Machine are classics built on riffs.
Maybe he does write more songs built on riffs now. They're just more Faces-y and Stonse-y than in the Mats days.

Seems like Paul wrote more songs built on riffs in the mats,do you think it was because he was trying to impress the other band members with cool riffs?
What are your favorite PW riffs?

In my experience neighbors don't want to hear music coming from their neighbors,no matter who they are.I think it would be cool to have a neighbor who tolerates/appreciates the racket though!

It's funny,no matter who would be in the reformed band the name fits!THE REPLACEMENTS.
Tommy has already said he wouldn't want to do a project with Paul and not call it The Replacements.
Dinosaur Jr. is a good example. They did a reunion tour first and played all the classics then went in the studio and started cranking out good albums followed by tours. They play all the festivals. They have done everything right since reforming.I agree "reuniting" is kind of a bitter sweet thing, but to actually "reform" and be a working band,if done right, doesn't take away from the bands legacy at all. That said, like was noted,Dino has the original line-up in tact.
It's seems like Paul is unsure of how to pull off a Mats reunion without the hijinks. How about no hijinks and playing rock solid sets for the love of playing. There needn't be all the falling apart and clowning around. So much time has passed I think 99.9% of anyone buying a ticket to see the Mats would just want to see an all out rock and roll show and nothing more. That they could pull off and it's so few and far between these days that bands have what PW & TS have to offer. You know...dudes with rock and roll DNA.
It just seems Paul is lacking for the motivation to do it more than wanting to do it for the fun of playing. The opportunity to do it isn't going to be there forever. As of now I guess he's taking the opportunity not to do it.I think that's relatable. He doesn't want to tour in any way shape or form, while Tommy is a road warrior.

Since Paul mentioned that he was writing for Glen Campbell before he put this song out it seemed that maybe this song was rejected so that's why Paul put it out himself. Now we find out it's the name of the Glen Campbell album and it's his final LP.Kind of strange that Paul would release it.

Stain Yer Blood was on the Friends soundtrack though. You don't think he would short change one of his solo releases by leaving a good song off the album and giving it to a soundtrack because it would sell better?Oh,the humanity!
