Seems like Paul wrote more songs built on riffs in the mats,do you think it was because he was trying to impress the other band members with cool riffs?
What are your favorite PW riffs?

Can't Hardly Wait, hands down.
Has anyone ever noticed Clapton ripped it off in "Motherless Child"

Footsteps. Eyes Like Sparks. Vampires and Failures.
Funny thing is, when I think of Westerberg songs built on riffs, ones he's done solo come to mind first.

Just off the top of my head, I like the one in "Devil Raised a Good Boy", "World Class Fad"----really simple riffs, but in the context of the songs, they're brilliant.

Gun Shy has got a great riff, among many others. I'm sure some of PW's riffs would make even Keef himself blush.

He's still been knocking out some great riffs in his solo career.
"Love You in the Fall." His version of "Wild As I Wanna Be" has a good Faces/Stonesy riff. The "Be Bad For Me" riff is brilliant. The electric "Crackle & Drag" might be my favorite. Either that or "Knockin' On Mine."

Maybe theres a different feel to them when Tommy is involved because Love You In The Fall has a Mats feel to it compared to other solo PW songs built on riffs.I like it when Paul lets a chord ring out while Tommy thumps away on the bass-lines(Message To The Boys)It makes the guitars sound big. It's like a slight of hand thing that gives the songs a distinct feel, mood, atmosphere.
Devil Raised A Good Boy is great.I can only imagine that song live!Be Bad For Me is great.I have not heard Wild As I Wanna Be by Paul.
There's sort of a PTMM energy to the more recent collaborations between Tommy and Paul or maybe a rawer more rocking 14 Songs feel.I really like it.It's good to know that if they ever meet up downstream to make a record they will have a great sound.I hope they do it just to make a ripple so other bands will try to cop to that sound.Because alot of the production and music and singing and writing on modern rock records is not good.
I Will Dare,Talent Show,The Ledge,Answering Machine are classics built on riffs.
Maybe he does write more songs built on riffs now. They're just more Faces-y and Stonse-y than in the Mats days.

Funny thing is, when I think of Westerberg songs built on riffs, ones he's done solo come to mind first. Same here. His solo career has felt way more riffy to me than the Mats stuff. That may also be because the Replacements songs are almost always more structured and complex than his solo stuff, so a lot of his solo songs seem to ride along on the same riff, while the Mats stuff is more dynamic overall. Kickin' The Stall, Eyes Like Sparks, Be Bad For Me...all awesome.

Waiting for Somebody jumps immediately to mind as being riff-tastic. Message to the Boys has a killer riff, too. Not sure if that would be considered 'Mats or solo. Sort of in a gray area, though I seem to remember Westerberg claiming he had written that song years ago with the Mats.

wow, you're right. never knew that! Now that's interesting, but I can't hear it in the version I came up w/ on YouTube. The thing I always hear is the Beatles' "I'm Only Sleeping" in the "meet me anyplace" part of "I Will Dare." A couple alt versions: "I'm Only Sleeping" (part starts at 0:35) "I Will Dare" (part starts at 0:48)

i l-o-v-e all the al green talk! great catch on the horn riff. after reading this thread, i popped al green's greatest hits onto my ipod.
the only somewhat thread related thing i will bring up is motherless child is a super old song. it's way older than clapton.
