If I remember right I saw Paul being interviewed on MTV and he was talking about The Ledge and they were bleeping out his curse words. In that little snippet the band seemed tangible compared to everything else that was on MTV at the time. The Ledge video visually tapped into their outsider stance,I really liked that. Then when I saw the I'll Be You video I loved it as their behavior just dissolved into chaos.(It reminded me of the early Who video with the pies or something.I think the Last Night video by The Strokes recalled the I'll Be You video for me in some ways.)I went out and bought PTMM & DTAS on the same day then shot hoops behind my garage and cranked them on my shitty boombox.Within the year I bought them all.Discovering the Bob Stinson element was really cool. They were so magical to me.Just beyond perfect.Like I couldn't wrap my mind around how much I liked them and they weren't from England or L.A.,they were from my neck of the woods.I moved away from home for the first time and traveled around and tried to turn everyone I met onto The Replacements. The ASD cover art really captured the mood of my lean times being away from home.Good, crazy times! It took forever to finally hear If Only You Were Lonely and Nowhere Is My Home!

Vagrant errors... Track order listed wrong on Come Feel Me Tremble.Everything Goes Wrong left off Come Feel Me Tremble.I don't think These Days was supposed to be released on Come Feel Me Tremble. The cover art for Stereo/Mono is mixed up.The photo of Paul on the front cover is supposed to be backed with the Grandpaboy Mono headshot.I think Paul said some things kinda got lost in translation of what he wanted.
I would love to see Stereo/Mono re-released on it's tenth anniversary with bonus tracks and cool packaging and liner notes written by Robert Pollard, who publicly praised the album.

I thought Folk Star was about Jackson Browne and How Can You Like Him was about Tommy and Axl Rose.

All About Me = Not on the Open Season vinyl release
The soundtrack was released on Lost Highway.I think Paul would be in pretty good company on that label if he ever releases another album.I think Vagrant had too many errors on their Westerberg releases, even though I love that they let Paul basically do whatever he wanted.

No. It's very difficult to beat Born To Run in my book. In my mind I think Darkness On The Edge Of Town is better, but when I actually listen to Born To Run I know I'm wrong.

It was Paul that wanted Slim and Tommy to finish the Buddy Holly tour. That never happened. It was Paul that mentioned him and Chris Mars talking about getting the band back together. That never happened. Pics of Paul and Tommy jamming.Nothing became of that. Paul saying he's in the best shape he's ever been in and his voice is able to belt out the classic mats songs again and he's ready if it happens. No proof. No reunion. A "closed to the world" non-reunion reunion at the Open Season premier. No "real" shows to follow. Two new songs for the Mats "best of" but PW mentions they recorded more than just two songs and Tommy wanted to put out an album and go on the road.It didn't happen.

Seems Paul has been hinting at a Mats reunion since Mono came out.It seems to coincide with things he's promoting.Do you think he's turned that age old question of the Mats reuniting/touring into something that works to his advantage by stirring up a little interest while promoting something, when in actuality he has no interest at all in ever putting the band back together?Maybe it's his way of letting all the people who would love a Replacements reunion down lightly.Or do you think they've almost gone through with it?Maybe it's all of the above depending on what mood he was in.

The underwear line is kind of a risky line, but it probably adds the most important element of character study in the song. It's both private and universal.hopeful and vulnerable. It makes the song sadder that these people are going to great lengths to be acceptable to other people, down to being self conscious about their personal hygene, and are still ending up alone.

Him performing wouldn't have anything to do with any causes. His performance itself as a work of expression and art is what would be celebrated. There seems to be a huge reverence for the artists as artists(and not as celebrities)who play on the TED stage. It's like performing in front of a crowd of James Liptons or something. That could be something that might interest him for a night.I think it would be way cooler than VH1 Storytellers or something like that since the performance itself would be judged as art and not have to follow any format.

Has anyone heard of Ted.com?It's this website where smart people talk about their inventions and how to better the planet. It's like every person gets to do their own Inconvenient Truth style lecture.Sometimes they have musical performers. What are the chances Paul would do a one off show like this?

I just watched a live version of Angels Walk on Youtube. It was pretty kick ass.I might ditch Hide N Seekin' and put Angels Walk on my Eventually Redux.Hard to lose Hide N Seekin though."You speak in parables/You lookin' terrible tonight" is pretty good stuff. It's kind of later in the game from the "You wax poetic about things pathetic as long as you look so cute" line in World Class Fad.

My guess would be that Rod doesn't have the pipes to sing the Faces tunes anymore. You couldn't ask for a better line up.Maybe Rod will change his mind.

As a side note...does anyone know how Paul gets his guitar to sound like a power drill on You've Had It With You?Just cranking the amp?
And can anyone else hear a split second of crazy rock n roll going on just before Time Flies Tomorrow starts?

Mamadaddydid is too good of a song to be left off. Maybe as a hidden 13th track? Artists really don't do this trick anymore do they. It was a big deal when cd's first came on the market. I was thinking it would be cool if there were different bonus tracks for the same album. It would make the fans all communicate to find out how many different bonus tracks were floating around. They could make one of them really rare.It would be kind of a neat thing. If I wrote the hook for MamaDaddyDid it might take some convincing not to put it on the album...like playing back the bridge or something.Plus Century is pretty hooky too and it's a better song.

Scooter, you're first impression of All That I Had was probably on par with mine, but when put with the rest of the songs on Eventually it cuts through the mix.If you're making the comparison of Angels Walk to Runaway Wind then I would make the comparison of All That I Had to Things.
I never understood what song was the centerpiece of Eventually. Was it Once Around The Weekend? All That I Had Is obviously "that" song. It's like Boring Enormous. It lets you know, or atleast gives you an approximation of where the artist is at.It doesn't make it the "best" song, but it makes the album more interesting.
Remember,at this time even Peter Jesperson was blasting Paul over quality control and needing an editor and saying Paul was not a good judge of his own material and I'm sure some of his former bandmates agreed. It takes nothing away from his creative talent, but there is an art to track selection and running order and putting out singles that even Paul admits he isn't too savvy about when it comes to his own material. It's a difficult perspective for an artist(of Pauls indulgent nature)to judge and categorize their own material.John Lennon didn't know which Beatles songs were on which Beatles albums.
I'm not saying I'm an expert at it.I just made a version of Eventually that works for me. It's more dapper to go along with those nice suits PW was rocking in back then.
Angels Walk still sounds like an over produced demo to me.Though I'll admit I am a sucker for the "I'll meet you 'round the block" part.I think maybe Scott Litt could have done something cool with it.I took a bit of a prosecuting attorneys take on the song.I don't hate it that much. I just thought there were already songs that captured better what Time Flies,Angels Walk, and MamaDaddyDid failed to capture. They would make a nice little EP with Make Your Own Kind Of Music thrown on there.
I don't get why people have always blamed Pauls knucklehead dumb Replacements fans for not being able to grasp Eventually. How insulting is that?To Pauls credit I believe he had the material to make a better record,it just wasn't executed as well as it might have been.I still want to hear King Of America!
Oh I'm just rambling...I did retract the Bret Michaels bomb as that was a low blow and I should know better.Sorry!
My criteria really had nothing to do with whether I liked the songs or not.I didn't precalculate what songs to leave off.If I precalculated it I probably would have left off Trumpet Clip,You've Had It With You,and maybe All That I Had.I was kind of surprised I liked it better without the songs I left off.It was an attempt to construct an album that made sense to me.It was Pauls selling point that the record flowed and the biggest flaw upon hearing the album was that,if it did flow, alot of people didn't see it.I like my Joni Mitchell and John Prine records and it's an insult to those records to say that Eventually is just as good, even if it aspires to be.Suicane and Stereo are that good without all the aspirations. LONG LIVE EVENTUALLY!
