...the opportunity to talk to a guy about what he's been doing for the last five years..honest, creative, booty shake worthy stuff!...and all anybody wants to do is relive their frat boy pasts....fricking grow up. And there's no excuses anymore, because he's toured how many times and played the oldies but goodies for everyone who missed it the first time around. What is wrong with people? harsh as this sounds, i have a hard time disagreeing with my friend, the mule. i was a little taken aback by the poll results.

looking at the results, we are a predictable lot.

i don't really know how i would choose between any one of the holy trinity. for what it is worth, i think i listen to tim & ptmm a little more often than i do lib, but that might just be a function of what is on my ipod.
don't make me choose! just don't!

btw, thanks, abnp, for the vids of "ain't got me". it is fun seeing paul on the larry sanders show, but i agree that the leno version is better. seems more fiery. anyway, thanks again for the sanders bit. i had never seen it before.
next silly question, does anyone remember the rumor, or if in fact it happened, paul's appearance on "homocide: life on the street"?

^ That one makes me shudder. As much as I usually enjoy the imperfect "rock n' roll" performance, that one makes me cringe every time. EDIT: Hmmmm...watching it back again it's actually not as bad as I remember it. i'm glad you edited that. i really like that performance. it was a little sloppy, but it had all the right parts in mostly all the right places. and you can't beat the wardrobe... paul's performance of "as far as i know" on that other late show was a true trainwreck, in my opinion. as for paul on gary shandling, i would LOVE to see it. i never watched that show, but if there is a clip somewhere....

always loved this one: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVS0AwJv530(can't figure out yt embedding - sorry) love the "joey & dee dee" tribute, and i have always been mightily impressed by the sheer balls of playing solo, completely by yourself, on national tv.

.... oh, and to be clear, i say his hair is "funny", but what i really meant is that it is "annoying". dave's hair style looks like he coulda been in the Ramones as well. totally. in fact, i probably wouldn't find it annoying if he were dressed like dee dee ca. 1977. small, pointless quibble, though. that guy clearly rocks, and that snl performance was cracking good. i saw that band perform a few times on the "14 songs" tour, and was never disappointed.

that one really IS good. i love watching the drummer (is that freese?). sometimes he plays really strangely; like he is trying to beat some demons out of his kit in a voodoo ritual. the other guitarist's hair is funny, too (that isn't tommy keene, right?). Yep, Josh Freese on drums. That's Dave Minehan on guitar and Darren Hill on bass. i thought that was darren hill, but i never remember that guitarist's name. what band was he in? didn't tommy keene play with paul for awhile? oh, and to be clear, i say his hair is "funny", but what i really meant is that it is "annoying".

i think we have gone through that list here a few months ago, but i will say it again: most everyone on that list is VERY appreciated & influential. tons & tons of recent & current bands cite these musicians as influences. the public at large however....
oh, and who is #12?

i probably misinterpretted what you were saying... i took what you were saying ("Mostly you only here about his love for Husker Du...") to mean you thought his music sounds like husker du. from this interview thingy, he respects the ethos of husker du, and that is great. i frankly i am just glad to hear people cite the mighty hd. i still don't hear hd very much in any of the ra incarnations. again, though, yes, i do hear paul quite often; along with the usual gram parsons, robbie robertson, etc. actually, i am glad he himself brought up prince in the other interview because i have made the comparison many, many times between them in terms of their working style.

i don't know much about r.a. (i have a few burned albums that i like), but i don't think i have ever heard of him being a husker du fan. on Yeah, he's talked about it a lot in interviews. The interviewer from Pitchfork even mentions it in the interview. right. i read this interview, but all i meant was that i had never really heard him (like i said, though, i don't follow him like i follow westerberg) mention husker du. also, i have heard a large swath of r.a., from whiskeytown to solo to the finger, and i have never once thought, "husker du!". i have thought, over & over, "paul westerberg!" & "the replacements!", though. it is interesting, too, that in this interview, the pitchfork person is the one who keeps bringing up the mats, husker du, ccr, the smiths, etc. r.a. brings up prince & fugazi. anyway, against all my better judgement i find myself liking r.a. more & more lately, and the interview was a good read. thanks!

PW - Angels Walk (unfortunately, I think he forgot he wrote this) Mats - Answering Machine i will second both of these. i have long declared my love for "angels walk", and i am glad you brought it up. and "answering machine" is so cutting. love it. allow me to add (from another thread on guitar solos), the solo for "runaway wind".

Mine would have to be the guitar in High Time off of Mono. I'd kill for that sound... it's a similar sound, i think, but "making me go" off of cfmt is just ace.

do you listen to them a lot? i ask because i wonder if i am correct in the assumption that "convicts" is a lot better than the one i have. "sound as ever" may be a victim of its time. i think it came out in the early 19grungies, and it shows... or sounds on the album. there is a baaaaad guitar fx pedal used throughout the album. one that makes the guitars sound "heavy". the new one just sounds more honest in its approach. i like the samples i have heard a lot. From a You Am I board: got another note from my friend: PS - Tim autographed a couple of cd's for me last night....I didn't read until we were in the car headed home....he had inscribed "Sound as Ever" with, "This blows. Tim Rogers" it's always nice to find consensus. it's even better when the artist him/herself agrees with your opinion. does anyone want my copy of "sound as ever"? it is in my pile of cd's to be sold....
