I'm a huge Ryan Adams fan so it's nice to see he's also a Mats' fan. Mostly you only here about his love for Husker Du. He was a little off-base though. Honestly, did The Replacements ever try sobering up?

i don't know much about r.a. (i have a few burned albums that i like), but i don't think i have ever heard of him being a husker du fan. on the other hand, a chimp can tell he is a westerberg fan.

The interviewer from Pitchfork even mentions it in the interview. right. i read this interview, but all i meant was that i had never really heard him (like i said, though, i don't follow him like i follow westerberg) mention husker du. also, i have heard a large swath of r.a., from whiskeytown to solo to the finger, and i have never once thought, "husker du!". i have thought, over & over, "paul westerberg!" & "the replacements!", though. it is interesting, too, that in this interview, the pitchfork person is the one who keeps bringing up the mats, husker du, ccr, the smiths, etc. r.a. brings up prince & fugazi. anyway, against all my better judgement i find myself liking r.a. more & more lately, and the interview was a good read. thanks!

When I saw Whiskeytown in 96 or 7, I thought of X due to Caitlin sharing of vocals and occasional dip into country that X (or the Knitters) would do. On that video, he simply sounds annoying!

On that video, he simply sounds annoying! Wha? RA annoying? Naw, can't be true. I did catch his Easy Tiger tour a few weeks back. It was a short show but damn good. Seemed like he actually came to play this time around.

Interesting that he is wearing a "Ghostbusters" pin. I've seen Tommy wearing a "Ghostbusters" t-shirt in some of the early photos.

I've grudgingly accepted that I sort of like a few of his songs. And that's about as far as my fandom goes. I think someone here said it best (and this was a few years ago, sorry, I don't remember who): he wears his influences on his sleeve. He'll sound like Paul one record, then the next he's a Morrissey clone. I haven't heard the new album save for whatever song Paste threw on their last sampler, but I've seen it turn up in used bins already more than once, and that's not a good sign. There's a pretty lengthy interview in this month's Harp, too. Don't know if it's online yet. (edit: yes it is)

... i have thought, over & over, "paul westerberg!" & "the replacements!", though. I started listening to Adams a few years ago, & it was a Mats fan that turned me on to to his music. On early listens I also kept hearing Paul as a big influence, but after a while not so much (exceptions: Aves & Dear Chicago). Kgp hit the nail on the head, he sounds like a lot of different guys, just depends on who he's channeling at the time. I'm am surprised by the number of comparisons still made between the two. Maybe it's got more to do with the carefully messy hair etc. than the songs. Then again, there was that whole 1st Ave(?) breakdown so maybe he's asking for it. Glad that he's gone sober, now he should concentrate on not reading his own press. Guy takes it way too personal & just doesn't seem to have the humor & self depreciating wit that Paul does. Which is the heart of Paul's charm. That, the songs & the crazy dance moves.

Anyone remember the R.A. thing at first ave a few years ago. He melted down and started bashing Paul. I guess he was pissed, because Paul "bashed" him in an interview. All Paul really meant though was that he had never heard of him. I wish i could remember where I read the account of what happened, but I have no idea where it was. I like a lot of his stuff. Heartbreaker and Rock n' Roll are my favs.

I wish i could remember where I read the account of what happened, but I have no idea where it was. At one point there was a link in one of the threads. An old thread called Ryan Adams...or Grizzly Adams? has a link, and a long excerpt from Ryan's stage patter re: PW, including this: And, you know, ever since I was a kid, you know, I liked The Cure and The Smiths, but my favorite band was The Replacements, ya know? And that guy, that guy from the Replacements like made me feel like I wanted to play music and be fearless, and I did that, and he inspired me, and then he went in the press, and he told me that he thought someone should kick my teeth down my throat. So frak him. None of my business. I don't care, you know, I always love coming into Minneapolis, like so many great bands, like Husker Du and Soul Asylum and The Replacements, and they inspire me, and I don't really care what that guy has to say, so frak him. You know, his records still make me feel so good, even if he has to be an old, coy bastard. It's just like, you know what? There's Paul Auster books down the street at your bookstore, go read 'em, and don't attack people that are influenced by you, you frakking old man. Like, I wouldn't have a career if it wasn't for The Replacements. You taught me how to play music. How frakking dare you get on me because you influenced me to like make my life to be rock and roll. You should be happy! You should be happy that people wanna frakking play rock! And like, you know, like be earnest. I'm not earnest because like I'm young and like to, you know, have a drink and like wanna speak my mind. How frakking bitter and wrong. Nobody would ever do that. Lou Reed doesn't even do that. So to you, Paul Westerberg, I say frak you! You frakking bitter old bitch! Get over it, you queen! What a piece of shit. And I will still like him for the rest of my life, I will still honor him, and I say, I'm glad that you were mean to me in the press because it's gonna make me write a better song than you every frakking day of my life. Or try...because you really can't. Anyway."

i probably misinterpretted what you were saying... i took what you were saying ("Mostly you only here about his love for Husker Du...") to mean you thought his music sounds like husker du. from this interview thingy, he respects the ethos of husker du, and that is great. i frankly i am just glad to hear people cite the mighty hd. i still don't hear hd very much in any of the ra incarnations. again, though, yes, i do hear paul quite often; along with the usual gram parsons, robbie robertson, etc. actually, i am glad he himself brought up prince in the other interview because i have made the comparison many, many times between them in terms of their working style.

Honestly, did The Replacements ever try sobering up? Both the 1989 tour and the 1991 tour were touted in the press as the 'new clean and sober Replacements tour.'... That turned out to be a joke in 1989, but Paul cleaned up in 1991..Ryan Adams appeared to know the scoop by his response to the comment. CF
