tommy hates talking about the mats it seems. it sure seemed that way. "Let's get to the Lakers". And he seemed to be a lot more impressed to hook up with Chris than he was with Paul? Maybe I just read into it? Tommy seems to have mastered the art of the wordy, eloquent, non-answer...particularly with regard to Mats questions.. CF

Thanks Pline!
In terms of Paul, it's never a good thing to make commitments you're unwilling to keep. If you don't want to do something, the proper course of action is to simply say no. On the other hand, if the issue of responsibility regarding publicity events was someone's top priority, it's hard to see how they could have ever become a Replacements/Westerberg fan in the first place.
It's a good sign that anyone is talking about The Replacements in the present tense - all we can do is wait and see what happens from here...

Any truth to the rumors than Ryan Adams and Jim Rome are going to start a support groups for spurned Westerberg worshippers?

From Pitchfork: The Replacements: "Message to the Boys" [skipped first part about Rome] Rather than a new beginning, "Message to the Boys" works best as loyal farewell. Reminiscent of three-chord struts like Tim's "Hold My Life" and "Little Mascara", this is vintage mid-era Mats-- in between the early gutter punk and the late maudlin mopes. Westerberg's booze-bard lyrics are characteristic to the point of self-mythological as he begins, "Well, I met her in a bar/ Like I always say." His lost love's doomed existence as a roaming runaway who's missed but not forgotten delicately doubles as a keen Replacements allegory. "Yeah, I miss her and her voice," sings Westerberg. The Mats are dead. Long live the Mats. [Ryan Dombal] I'm not sure the reviewer realized just how "keen" an allegory "Boys" is ... by A Reg's pal's interpretation. And not to get snippy, but let's overthink this through: would 3/4 of the original Mats bother getting together to record "early gutter punk" or "late maudlin mopes"? Of course the song would recall the High Period of the Mats.

Pline, have I told you that you are awesome today? You da man. After hearing the interview I have close to zero hopes that their will be a full fledged reunion tour for this. BUT, I can see them doing 1 or 2 unrehearsed gigs for charity or whatever down the line. Just for kicks. Maybe even something in Mpls. unanounced. I'm really looking forward the the box set. And damnit, is a book from someone who knows too much for a fan to ask for about the Mat's story? C'mon Peter, it would make for a nice companion to the box set.

Somewhere in "Our Band Could Be Your Life" there is a blurb about how Mars has written a Mats book. Not sure how much of it he's completed, but would love to see it published sooner rather than later.

I had a similar feeling. Ok, maybe no full fledged reunion tour. But hell, you're right----what about the occasional charity or benefit? Why not? Hell, maybe even do a fun promotional reunion gig on Letterman or Conan O'brien for the box set! Chris Mars can come in and help Paul on vocals if he doesn't feel up to playing drums for a TV appearance or something.

actually i have more faith in a small scale reunion. Tommy didn't even mention GnR so hes obviously not into it. he didn't slag on Paul at all as he did in earlier interviews. i think he sounded a little awkward, nervous or maybe even worried that Paul didn't show. i think he might be as in the dark of the no show as all of us. i've always had the feeling that there was a strong unspoken brotherhood between Paul and Tommy. i think tommy looks up to Paul artisticly but also recognizes his shortcomings. who knows why Paul wasn't there and who the F cares? hes putting out great tunes and thats good enough for me.

"leaked"?? There are only about 5 people who could have let that one slip out -- which one was it?

Personally, I can't stand Jim Rome and it makes me feel better to know that Paul stood him up. He was probably just taking Johnny to the dentist or in dutch with the missus...
I do think they will play some live gigs together. They are probably at least considering a formal tour, but like Paul did with the in-stores, they might do a few small gigs to get their feet wet. I feel pretty strongly that this will happen, enough to notify the wife that I may be hopping on a plane to MPLS on any given day to witness said event.

Personally, I can't stand Jim Rome and it makes me feel better to know that Paul stood him up. He was probably just taking Johnny to the dentist or in dutch with the missus... Historically Paul has always shown up for interviews w/ Rome. He was on in Dec 2003, for two segments I believe (I skipped work to listen). They had a good convo, Jim knows his stuff, and Paul was at ease, talking about how back in the day Tommy probably wanted to kick his ass. So something must have come up, I know he wouldn't blow off Rome. I'm not saying he shouldn't -- Rome talks about the 'Mats because he loves them, not necessarily because his meathead listeners love them -- but he wouldn't.

The first time around it sounds like "vest" not "dress" to my ears. I don't know, some hot girl wearing only a vest as a top doesn't sound like the grossest thing in the world to me. It might send a message to my boys (sorry). Then on the second time around it sounds like dress.

sounds exactly like waiting for somebody. You can sing the verse along with it damn near perfectly.
