p'raps he was in the basement and couldn't abandon a particularly spectacular lick? I'd take a new 'Don't Want Never' over an am sports talkshow interview any day of the week.

when Paul does a duet with sheryl crowe my respect for him will wane. when he jumps on the Rock/Rap ala Limp biscut i'll worry. and when he keeps on putting out solid tunes like Message to My Boys i'll stand up and applaud.

Whatever.
Would it have been nice to hear Paul? Sure. Is it the end of the world? Definitely not. It's not like this appearance was going to bring in thousands of new fans and push the buzz on the album all the way to number 1. It's not like thousands of fans are going to boycott buying the album because he stiffed them. It's unfortunate but won't mean squat in the long run. Rome may be mad now but if he's half the fan he seems to be he will laugh it off and have a "Mats experience" to share with his buddies.
The way I see it - we have 2 new tunes, we have Tommy and we are talking about the Replacements in the present tense and not the past. I'm good.

Yeah, it makes no difference to us fans, but you can see why Rome's mad, right? -- Spends a week hyping a guy and a band that almost none of his listeners have ever heard of, spends 20 minutes on a topic that is a) of little interest to his sports-freak "clones" and b) practically guaranteed to send ratings down, and then the subject blows him off? -- it's a public humiliation of someone who is actually trying to do you a favor.

Well you know, Rome doesn't mind publicly humiliating many of the people he speaks about on his show, so I don't have much issue with his feelings. In fact, that's one reason I find this sort of funny. somewhere, Jim Everett is grinning.

It just boils down to Paul being unable/unwilling to be a good boy and play the game. So now he's at least scorched a bridge with arguably his highest profile fan (unless, say, Tom Cruise or Angelina Jolie or Bill O'Reilly is lurking on this board) and maybe it wasn't the most career-wise thing ever. Like someone else said, whatever, but still, you always root for your idols to come through in the clutch. Oh well. Just hope we get an album full of sparkling, gripping and moving new songs sometime before too long.

To be fair, I did not hear the interview, but I cannot imagine the crossover of Mats fans and Rome fans being that great. MOST Mats fans didn't even know they were on Rome today. Most Rome fans didn't care.
So before you all blow this up into Paul just bashing at his career again, consider the implications of today in the big picture.
PLEASE. Because you're starting to worry me, most of you...

Well, of course, in the bigger overall picture, it isn't that big of a deal. I suspect I'm disappointed because as a fan, I love the guy and always look forward to seeing him or hearing from him. But perhaps that is a selfish thing of me, since Paul has given a LOT of himself---and very graciously so---to his fans. I was just looking forward to hearing from the guy. Ahh, hell, there ain't a whole lot of excitement in my life; this was supposed to be the highlight of my day! As for his career and the Mats? I'm guessing Paul made peace with the whole fame thing years ago and really doesn't care anymore about this ephemeral show biz stuff.

It's easy to sit here and kinda speculate and get down on Paul for not phoning in, but none of us really know what happened. Not only that, but I don't think we should be worrying about Paul supposedly "ruining" another chance at...what, really? He's pushing 50 and he ain't about to suddenly become a star now, and I'm sure he's more than comfortable with that fact, and I know I am, as a fan.

If I was riding a 25 year recording career, and it came down to not upsetting an AM sports radio host to make or break a greatest hits package....I might have to check out a pro skateboarding career. Yeah, its disappointing as fans not to hear a promised interview...but I believe there would have been a good chance it would have contained a similiar amount of 'ummms', 'yeahs', and 'I dont knows' as Tommy's somewhat uninterested segment. hey...we got to hear a new tune out of the deal... that's what should sell records.

it's funny too because to us, they just recorded these songs. But in reality, it was 6 months ago. He might be over it already. I'm fine with Paul and Tommy by themselves because they put out great records.
Also, did Tommy say anything about GNR? They are playing shows in ten days.

"But that's our boy for ya" is a very lame excuse. It may come as par for the course when following Paul, but it doesn't mean one should so easily accept it, apologize for it, and swallow such sh1tty treatment from our idols wholesale. Are you Jim Rome? Westerberg didn't slight me in any way. So what's to accept? That he didn't appear on some nitwit's radio show? Big whoop. No one is apologizing for him or making excuses. All I know is that I got to hear the new tune and an interview with Tommy. That's good enough for me.

If Rome is really a fan, he'll get over it. P-Dub may very well have had something that was a little higher priority. The honest to goodness fans get his no-show and forgive. Who knows, tomorrow Rome may mention how Paul phoned him personally to set things straight. And if not, big deal.

That was pretty funny. I laugh every time. I don't listen to Rome but I'd bet a big reason he loves the Replacements is their attitude. Paul/Tommy/Chris/Bob may have been punk but they were never punk-ass punks.

Heh
Reading this thread has filled me with a perverse delight. Most members of this board know my experience/feelings regarding Rome.
I have been making an effort to "grow up and get over it" but I still can't listen to his show, and knowing that he was pissed at PW for pulling a no-show is just...delicious.

Well Well Well. I went thru and read most of the responses. I think its funny that any of you expected any more out of Paul. The EXACT reason he didn't call in, is the EXACT reason all of you and me loved The Replacements and love his solo work. Because his take it or leave attitude comes thru in his music and WHENEVER he decides to talk. Didn't any of you see "Come Feel Me Tremble"? I don't think he cares who the F**K hears his music. Dudes an artist. The song was recorded back in Jan. That time has passed. He's doing something else. I would have loved to have heard him on the radio today. But in the back of my mind, I wondered if he was gonna show. And by the way Rome wasn't mad at Paul as much as he was mad at the label for the promise of Paul calling in.
