Unsatisfied and Eyes Like Sparks are sort of sister songs. Sparse lyrics, but both make the point of the song clear. Raw desire or emotion. I love both.

Tough to tell which is more embarrassing: This years RRHOP class or Harold Baines being inducted into the baseball HOF.

On the topic of songwriting, I remember hearing a Bob Seger interview on WNEW in New York back in ‘92 shortly after Springsteen had released the dual albums Human Touch and Lucky Town. He spoke about how he was amazed that Bruce still had enough to say to make an album because he was shot as a songwriter. Some people have the interest and ability to continue to find something to say, some don’t.

I would probably go with one of my favorites, Within Your Reach. The drum machine is an outlier for them.

1. Why does unsuccessfulness feel good to you. 2. What is your greatest career regret? 3. Can I crash at your place when I have to go to MN to visit the inlaws?

Once Around the Wwekend has always struck me. When it first came up it struck me as a really honest song about trying to sober up. At the time, as a single and completely unattached man, it just struck me for Paul. But as I've gotten older and had times where I really wanted a beer or twelve but knew I probably shouldn't, it has struck me on a more personal level. Not that I am an alcoholic, but there are times where you can see that road taking shape before you and you know you need to do something else to veer away. Sweeping the floor is as good as any other distraction.

Not a fan of that song. Not a fan of Bookmark or Sunrise either. I guess I can get not liking Bookmark, but as a guy who has worked with largely underprivileged children without active fathers for the last twenty years, that song hits the nail on the head.

I'd take it over Sunrise Always Listens. Not a fan of Actor in the Street. Tough song to connect to for me. That said, I love Sunrise Always Listens. Sounds like a man on the edge of insanity. A song Roger Waters wishes he wrote.

So...what if, like baseball, the use of PEDs (Performace enhancing drugs) kept candidates out of the Hall of Fame? Would anybody be in? (Please don't mention the Motor City Madman - He is already in the douche HOF). Springsteen

Here is the thing about the Rock and Roll HOF. It has some bands that I consider to be absolute trash in there. Journey and the like. But if a band like Journey is in, then Bon Jovi belongs, Phil Collins belongs, And the Replacements do not, which is fine. Uncle Tupelo doesn't belong. Wilco does not belong. Rage Against the Machine doesn't belong. Those are bands that I love but that don't have the mass appeal- no matter how good their music is or how innovative they may have been- to get into the HOF. THEM GETTING INTO THE HOF or not has no bearing on their appeal to me. I will use a hockey analogy to make my point. Mike Gartner was renowned for his ability to score goals (40+ a year) during the regular season as well as for his ability to disappear during the playoffs. Mike Gartner is a Hall of Famer and I would never have wanted him on my team (similar to Journey playing on radio/phone/Spotify). On the other side is a guy named Rob Dimaio. He was a smaller center who was tough as nails, played physically, fought whenever he felt it was needed, strong defensively, and popped a few goals in every year. Nowhere near a HOF worthy player. But I would want him on my team every single time (similar to the Replacements on my radio/phone/Spotify) before I would take Gartner.

I did not know that Spirit! That is awesome. I think the Thunders song is better too anyway. To continue the theme somewhat of bands slagging each other (and pull it back around to Hood in a way) you also have Skynryd calling out Neil Young in 'Sweet Home Alabama'. DBTs on Southern Rock Opera repeat the legend that Neil was a pallbearer at Ronnie's funeral. Honorable mention to the Stones for Mick ad-libbing in some live versions of 'Star Star': "Jimmy Page was quite the rage. I could not see the reason why." I suggest listening to Warren Zevon's "Play it All Nigt Long". It's like Skynrd and Young are in the midst of a slap fat when Zevon's jumps off the top rope on Skynrd. A couple of lines: Sweet Home Alabama Play that dead band's song There ain't much to country living sweat, piss, jizz, and blood Daddy's doing sister Sally Grandma's dying of cancer now

Nice to see some spirited discussion on the board! I agree, Hood's take sort of makes it look like Petty was taking a shot at the Mat's with 'Wide Open' even as he praises the artfulness of it. I just don't think his viewpoint holds water when you look at the lyrics. This reminds me of those tenuous arguments claiming that Paul's World Class Fad was about Cobain. Or was it?? Round Two.... Ah what the hell...can we agree that the best jab between musicians was Lennon's 'How do you sleep?' aimed at McCartney? Of course, I also like Thunders nailing the Pistols with 'London Boys' In response to 'New York'. Agree on the spirited discussion. It's fun to read on here. I would say even better than Lennon's line was McCartney taking Lennon's comment that all Paul ever wrote for the Beatles was silly love songs and turning it into Silly Love Songs. It spent several weeks at the top of the charts.

I love his basement recording overall. Not really enjoying these new tracks so much though. As long as he is still down there thrashing away something great will emerge in time.

I haven't listened to it in a long, long time. And that's a damn shame because I love it. Off the top of my head, the song about his father gets me everytime.

A friend and I once wrote a pilot episode for a TV show. While the script never left his apartment, there is a line that was stolen from Westerberg. One guy is talking to the other about a girl that he's been after but can never get to and he refers to her as "My white pearl in a sky of ebony". The two goofballs look knowingly at each other, impressed by the poetic nature of the line, nod and go on with their day. Obviously taken from Blavk Eyed Susan.
