"Dead Sick Of" gives very 49:00 vibes (probably because it feels like a repetitive snippet) www.drywoodgarage.com/

It bums me out to say this, but....i really don't like much about these new tunes. The music is alright, but, God damn, the lyrics are just complete throwaway laziness. This is probably an unpopular opinion...but....the only new song I enjoy is Got It Made.

Everyone has their own tastes and while I find these tunes OK they are not something I'm going to spend a lot of time on, like the new Bash & Pop for instance. I appreciate that Paul likes to monkey around in his basement and that he throws the fans some bones. If he isn't going to release a "proper" record, we just take what we can get. He can be all over the place and that's one of the things I like about him (and I liked about the Grandpa Boy releases), he tries different stuff....sometimes it sticks, sometimes it doesn't.

The half-assed, thrown-together, record-once-and-release thing ran it's course for me very shortly after it started. It was tolerable as a one-off anomaly, I'm glad to know he's at least creating music, it's always good to hear his voice, and there are some moments I like, but for me these releases are a poor representation of what a songwriter and musician of his caliber is capable of, and I find that frustrating.

Yeah, I'm happy to listen to anything he puts out, but, speaking as a passive musician and songwriter, this is the type of throwaway stuff I mess around with in my studio when I'm at a complete loss creatively. I'm glad he's not releasing this as a proper album, and I like to think he's just having some fun. If that's the case, that's awesome; but if this is the best he's got these days, it's fine, but I'm not interested. Having said all that, i love Paul, probably my favorite songwriter of all time. It's fine if he doesn't have any ground breaking material right now, he's certainly proved himself to be an amazing artist time after time. Also, 49:00 is my favorite Westerberg album.

The weirdest part of all this is that we're not getting a new Replacements record because (according to Tommy) Paul wasn't happy with how recording went. But he's happy with these?

The weirdest part of all this is that we're not getting a new Replacements record because (according to Tommy) Paul wasn't happy with how recording went. But he's happy with these? I think this stuff is safe for him because it's so out there and obviously not meant to be...good (for lack of a better word), it will never be compared to anything he's done in the past. If you read into the things that Tommy has said since then about those sessions it kinda makes sense. Paul's got baggage and is so concerned about the legacy, they tried 3 times to record and nothing stuck, all that. Like it was doomed before they even started. It seems like Paul just has some hangup against doing anything remotely polished. No one's looking for Bohemian Rhapsody. I think we'd all be happy if he did something similar to Songs for Slim, with whoever, where they had a good band and the songs were properly laid down, but they definitely weren't over polished or worked. They were super loose and fun, but still cohesive and tracked, mixed, and mastered with the intention to end up with something listenable. Very much like the Bash And Pop record. It's a drummer, an engineer, a little more forethought, and a couple takes away from being so much better.

Yeah, you'd think that the Bash&Pop production level (both records) would be exactly the sound that Paul would want for a new Mats record. It's the same raw, Faces-y sound that he's always said he loves. I guess it's just personalities and baggage that keeps them from just doing it. The biggest bummer about the whole thing was hearing Tommy talking about how Paul wouldn't even listen to the songs that he brought to the table.

Yeah, I dunno what to think. is this just some fun stuff for him to throw out there? I can't see this being the culmination of an actual release---but in a way, I like having new material from Paul, even if they're throwaway demos or something. Do I really dig these? Umm, no.
But as someone interested in what he's up to, well, now I know! Do I expect him to hit home runs all the time? Not really. However I feel about it, to me I find it interesting to see what he's capable of, or what he's creating and expressing.
I railed before about how I thought it was horrible he was erasing over his ADAT tapes and wiping out demos and starting new songs. he said it was more therapeutic for him and some of those songs weren't meant for the fans. Moreover, I remember I posted that I'd like to hear those demos and songs and I'd decide as a fan if they were something I could relate to or like. I still feel that way.
In other words, I like to see the totality of what Paul, as a creative being and artist, is doing (anyone really look at the artwork and his sketches?). Am I gonna like it all? Of course not.
Like Jer and rosecity mentioned above---this stuff is not meant to be "good" or maybe even commercial, just him having some fun. And in the end, I think we can all agree that the production is not going to get any better if he's doing it all himself in the basement. He still loves bashing that hi hat cymbal in the same drum pattern he's been using forever, lol...

I really hope that this is just a clearing out of the garage, giving stuff away for free and for attention, and we'll have a proper album soon.

I love his basement recording overall. Not really enjoying these new tracks so much though. As long as he is still down there thrashing away something great will emerge in time.

I guess if I put myself in his shoes.....his reality....it would be very difficult to release an album with The Replacements name on it. The legacy is there. It's not going anywhere, but anything he records now, with that name on it, opens it all back up for comparison and dissection. How can he compete against himself when he isn't the same person as he was when he was creating Hootenanny, LIB, or Tim? Someone will tear his heart out....he's always seemed afraid of that and I wouldn't expect him to subject his legacy to it. He doesn't have to. But I would gawdam snap up a new Replacements record in a mouses heartbeat! His t-shirts said it all....he was obviously a little uncomfortable with what he was doing on the reunion tour. He's throwing some bones out there and as Free Rider said, we are getting a little piece of the totality of what he is as an artist. Like seeing Picasso doodle. In the end, it's nice to be able to talk about him in the present moment.

I just stumbled upon this review for a Mose Allison CD and imagined it was about P.W.'s career.
Mose Allison Gimcracks and Gewgaws
AllMusic Review by Richard S. Ginell
The older Mose Allison gets, the sharper his mind becomes, the more idiosyncratic his music sounds, and the more pleasure the aficionado gets for spending the better part of an hour with his latest stuff. By this time, the 70-year old philosopher from Tippo, Miss. had sharpened his wit and insight on life to an even keener edge, musing wryly on materialism, technology, aging, death, even his own name ("MJA, Jr."). The tunes seem to have disappeared almost entirely but it doesn't matter; the lyrics are so damned clever and as hilarious as ever, even when they are obviously sequels to previous masterworks like "Your Mind Is On Vacation" ("What's With You") or "Young Man's Blues" ("Old Man Blues"). Mose's piano style by now has been pared down to its unique essentials, a ceaseless, swinging linear flow drawing from the three Bs -- Bach, Bartok and bop -- and his voice has barely aged since his Prestige days. Mark Shim muses ably on tenor sax now and then, and guitarist Russell Malone ranges all over the stylistic lot between R&B and jazz. At this rate, waiting four years or so between albums in the '90s, Allison has kept his creative batteries fresh every time out.

Got It Made - There is a great song in there. I think it's the best of the recent bunch. I can't get behind the delivery, but serve it up like Waiting for Somebody and I'm all in.

keep 'em coming. No matter how different, strange, weird or off-handed they may be. He's an artist and I want to hear everything that he's willing to share. Everything he does is interesting to me.

You know, oompa makes me feel a lot better about these releases. It seems obvious now that he is probably just having fun and quietly releasing a bunch of random stuff. I hope that perhaps these weird little songs are the start of marketing the release of a real album. Keep 'm coming, Paul! We love ya.
