One of mine is:
A good day is any day that you're alive
It took me a long time to realize that he's not saying "you" in the general sense of everyone, general speaking. he was saying that to Bob and about Bob, and the song took on an even more poignant meaning to me.

There's a world in between being everything--to everyone And being nothing--to no one I am a button--to sew on

23 hours ago you called my phone you said get your ass down here so we can talk 23 years ago I would have run every mile woulda called you in the morning you said maybe this ain't the right thing to do and I'd spend the afternoon in tears
not particularly witty but this song - and these lines, right before the solo kicks in - always gets me, and then:
Our paths cross again and again sometimes five years in between or ten there's one thing that goes unsaid now we say it out loud maybe you was the one

"When you wish upon a star that turns into a plane"
I have a lot of favorites, but that one is the tops for me.

I just pulled out Besterberg and had to laugh at Man Without Ties again. Ahhh, bachelorhood....
On Saturday they won't catch you in your yard You're dreaming of tonight's fine cuisine With a microwave and a library card It'll taste like plastic, but it'll be fast and hot....!
A man without ties don't need a thing Don't want no wife, showed (?) her goodbye A man without ties is king

And if you say nothing Then that's something I'll understand
So simply sums up the end of a relationship/search for closure or meaning.

Talens Show:
Well we got our guitars and we got thumb picks And we go on after some lip-synch chicks We're feelin' good from the pills we took Oh, baby, don't gimme that look

Answering Machine:
Big time's got its losers Small town's got its vices A handful of friends One needs a match, one needs some ice Call-waiting phone in another time zone How do you say I miss you To an answering machine? How do say good night To an answering machine?

I was cast as a happy-go-lucky guy Now I’ve been demoted to an old, sad stay-inside But on the backstage wall With my boot I signed for us all I shouted I was finally here once Well before your time Yes, I was finally here once Well before my time I was finally here once
I always kind of thought this was vaguely a metaphor about Paul's career and life. The "sad stay-inside" referencing his reclusiveness, the defiance of kicking the wall and letting it be known that he's still around.
Paul has also said in interviews that he thought the Mats' timing was off, that they were ahead of their time too and when grunge and the loud guitar stuff became fashionable, the Mats were on their way out and moving in a different direction as well.

A friend and I once wrote a pilot episode for a TV show. While the script never left his apartment, there is a line that was stolen from Westerberg. One guy is talking to the other about a girl that he's been after but can never get to and he refers to her as "My white pearl in a sky of ebony". The two goofballs look knowingly at each other, impressed by the poetic nature of the line, nod and go on with their day. Obviously taken from Blavk Eyed Susan.

I still think its funny how Paul would always change the lyrics of 'within your reach' live. Such as: Never seen the bears go sixteen and oh
or
Never seen a mountain cept on a six pack of beer
P.S. I will vote for the entire lyrics of 'shut up'

Some popcorn for dinner, last night it was cheesecake A little sleepy-time tea spiked with another heartache
How young are you? How old am I? Let's count the rings around my eyes
You're like a picture on a fridge that's never stocked with food
A leap of faith or a jump of stupid
If being wrong's a crime I'm serving forever If being strong's your kind, I need help here with this feather
You wax poetic about things pathetic, as long as you look so cute
Baby learns to crawl, watching Daddy's skin
The rich keep getting richer, and the poor keep getting drunk
I need something to calm me down, I need something to keep me focused Narcoleptic, Paranoid, & borderline hopeless ADD, PCP, F-U-C-K-E-D that's me
Man, I'm dressin' sharp and feeling dull
