'White and Lazy' really seems like an oddball to me in the Mats canon. Just the mention of race alone makes it a little weird to me. I see it as a parody of mosh pit thrash that is meant to be humorous. Compared to the rest of their output this tune seems to fit the least. Not that I hate it or anything!
What Mats songs seem the most 'out there' to you??

"Asking Me Lies" threw me for a loop the first few times I heard it. Wtf is this?! It makes some sense to me now (I love it actually!), but stylistically it still feels like a kind of mutant freak in the 'Mats catalog. And lyrically, like, whaaaat??
"Little Boy Zoo / and the rock with his helpful friends / butterfly train never ends, never ends / at a Mexican Bar Mitzvah / for seven hundred years"...
Makes me think of America's "Ventura Highway"... "Seasons crying no despair / alligator lizards in the air"...

In retrospect it's not, but at first listen Lovelines was very odd.
Odd for the Replacements? I thought All Shook Down was out of character. What was that odd wind instrument anyhow?

If we're talking atypical for The Replacements, that's the first one I thought of...

I think "Willpower" is essential Mats.... Willpower involves "changing your life" (quitting drinking?). The mockingly delivered final lines "I don't wanna stop it... I don't wanna stop it!" captures the essence of the band...
"Asking Me Lies"... is an oddity... I still don't understand it's purpose. I like the comparison to Ventura Highway...but I think of Ventura HW as a place evoking song... Asking Me Lies seems mostly Jabberwocky Gibberish to me.
The one that came to mind for me was "Back to Back"... a sugary pop ballad. The first time I heard it, I thought what the hell?!!This isn't the Mats! Nearly 30 years later I still feel the same way.

The interesting thing about “Ventura Highway” is that there is no Ventura Highway. I believe the alligator lizard line refers to seeing shapes in the clouds.
As far as Mats songs, for me it’s probably The Last

I would probably go with one of my favorites, Within Your Reach. The drum machine is an outlier for them.

I never liked Asking Me Lies. I remember reading an interview with Paul about a yr or 2 after it came out, where he said he and Slim spent weeks on that song because they thought it was gonna be a big hit. He said they felt dumb when became apparent it wasnt...

I never liked Asking Me Lies. While the lyrics are made up of mostly nonsense lines, it has a few poignant ones. And even if it didn't, I'd still love the music and vocals...dig that groove! I thought All Shook Down was out of character. What was that odd wind instrument anyhow? According to the book "Trouble Boys," it's an ocarina, and it's played by Steve Berlin from Los Lobos.

Nightclub Jitters always seemed out of place to me. Interesting, I thought it sat real well with that whole album... This song really helped define them as a band for me...It said so much about their ambivalence, their vulnerability, blatant fear...Stylistically, it expanded on their willingness to pursue anything...In another life, Paul could've been a great second-rate lounge singer...This is key to their discography...Saw them do this on that PTMM tour...Saw a rowdy crowd subdued and made reflective about fifteen minutes into what, to that point, had been a super-amped-up set...Pretty amazing...

I remember absolutely hating this song on first listen when my roommate brought PTMM home after its release. Now, of course, I absolutely love it. No doubt it caught Mats fans by surprise. 'I Don't Know' was also a little hard to take on first listen. They are both a little odd when compared to the rest of the output by the boys.
