Sounds like this may have been the best show of the reunion so far!

I'm in no position to say if it's the best festival gig yet out of these reunion shows, but dammit, I can't believe I missed it. I gotta get to one of these things, I'm setting my sights on Boston Calling now, unless they announce something else on the east coast that I can get to easier.

WOW!! It was a religious experience for myself and my brother. My older brother who grew up loving the stones, beatles, the who etc...and was introduced to Paul by me w/ Stereo Mono. His love for the Mats and Paul has exceeded all of the aforementioned bands. This was bigger than Elvis returning from the dead, the beatles with John and George..bigger than anything imaginable to us. We jockeyed our way to about 5 rows deep center stage..We really were in shock with anticipation knowing our band was going to be on that stage..Celebrating with others who felt exactly the same was incredible. One 40 plus guy front row was jumping up and down , pointing to his watch for the countdown, basically out of his mind with anticipation. Looking back at the crown raising his arms in victory, toasting everyone. It was awesome. He represented how we all felt..What a feeling of anticipation. Then it poured just before 8.. So par for course we all thought. Mats aren't supposed to play under the sun..Rain didn't effect anybody..It actually felt like it pumped everyone up even more! So they get on stage finally. Paul throws one yellow rain jacket into the crowd as to sarcastically say "here ya go..u should be alright now....your welcome..". They get on stage and all look at each other in a confused funny way almost to say.."..yeah..that's right ..we are here to play music but we forgot about that part of our trip". Paul shook his head as to say "here we go again..we'll never get it right" . Just beautiful.. Then they tore into the songs. Played with all the energy and love that is supposed to go into these awesome songs. I saw the Mats in 91 in May in Tampa. They were out of gas then..Paul hardly cared and was just doing the bare minimum. Shaky knees was 180 from that. They looked great (Paul looks better now than he did in 2005) and clearly, clearly cared about playing these songs with passion and attitude. It looked natural. Tommy and Paul's interaction was just sweet to see..very warm and playful. Tommy went over to Paul and looked down at the set list and said "so..are we gonna play this one ( one that they skippedby accident)..Paul kind of shrugged and said "sure"..Tommy laughed looking at Paul and the crowd and says "Reboot"..My brother screams out "Welcome back Paul!!". Paul replies "I never left motherfucker!".. Just too perfect. Yeah he missed some lyrics but by Paul's standards it was really minimal. He'd get lost and get back on track quickly.. Seemed to nail Androgynous, bastards, Left of the Dial and others. When introducing Billie Joe he said something to the effect "Alright, now don't fuck it up or I'm gonna kill you"..All in good fun. Overall Paul was friendly to BJA . BJA really was happy to be in the band and not taking the spotlight. No doubt that it was Paul's band and he was more than happy just to be a part of it. Towards the end Paul said something about if it was "alright if they cut into Modest Mouse's time. He said it in a way of course that meant " does it really freakin matter if we take their time away? hell no..we do what we want"..After the last notes of IOU rang out my bro and I just looked at each other like "Did that really happpen?" We were absolutely shell shocked. We stayed in a dazed state for at least an hour after the show. 110% blown away. I've seen probably 50 plus shows..some great ones include U2 at Slane castle, Zoo tv, Elevation tour, Bruce 4 times,Acdc, Paul Mcartney, Stones, Paul 14 songs, Paul in Northampton MA, Paul in New Orleans in 2005. All of these were the best I've ever seen...until Shaky Knees Mats. Shaky Knees Mats was the best ever. If you have a chance to see them, don't let the "festival setting" turn you off. You prob be able to get close and you'll be surrounded by Mats loving, ecstatic fans. It might of well been a small club as far as I'm concerned. Intimate and played plenty of tunes...It's a must see...

Sounds fantastic. this seems like the most enthusiastic, mats-partisan crowd so far (based on videos from other shows and my experience in Denver).

Kiss Me On The Bus from Shaky Knees. Not sure what happened to the sound. Maybe the microphone was wet?

I was at the Shaky Knees show, and I concur about the enthusiasm of the crowd. Particularly powerful were the performances of "Nowhere is my Home," "Left of the Dial, and "IOU."
Was it the water in the my ears, or were there sound problems in the beginning of the set? For the first few songs, I could barely hear Paul's vocals and Dave Minehan's guitar.

The sound was definitely "muddy" during the first few songs. It got better as the set progressed and became really loud and clear.

I've lurked on this board for a couple of months, finally decided to register to talk about the show. The crowd definitely changed after Portugal the Man, all the youngsters left and let us do our thing. I figured this would be the case so as soon as it cleared I made it all the way to the front and got on the rail. I know I'm tall and if I blocked anyone, I'm sorry, but I wasn't moving.
Timtoast, I saw your daughter and your message but she was about 10 people to my left and I couldn't get word to her!
But yeah, it was fantastic, the rain made it even more epic. I can't believe I was on the fence about even going to this in the first place, considering that I figured we wouldn't get a full set since they weren't playing last. But it kept going and going and going and was AMAZING. I've seen thousands of bands in concert and never thought that at 34 I'd geek out this much about any band.
For anyone on the fence about going to any of the upcoming shows: GO! HAVE FUN!
I got 4 tickets to the Minneapolis show in the presale so I'll be heading up with some friends who are from there.
But after Saturday I'm seriously considering going to the Louisville show too.

Timtoast, I saw your daughter and your message but she was about 10 people to my left and I couldn't get word to her! No problem! She texted me before the show and asked if any of my "Westerberg site friends" would be there. I didn't tell her about my post as I was hoping on of you would surprise her. She was right up by the front, on the left I think, blue Mats shirt on and having a great, great time.

Skunky's review pretty much nails it. This was a fantastic show. The pouring rain just made it more fun. None of us were leaving! I have never seen Paul look better or happier on stage. The crowd was large and loud. Song choices were excellent. 'Nowhere is my home' has aged so well. Paul's introduction of Billie Joe Armstrong kinda leads me to believe that he is now part of the band but I don't know...'as you can see we have swollen to a quintet'. Funny to hear PW good naturedly talk about how he does not enjoy playing Kiss Me on the Bus too. A huge beach ball was buffeted onto the stage at the end and Tommy did his best to kick it back into the audience as they left the stage but kinda flubbed it. 23 years since the last Mats show for me and 9 years since the last solo tour but this was worth the wait!!

I think the kissing thing was related to the "first gay NFL player", Michael Sam, being selected in the NFL draft earlier that day and the ensuing pics on the internet of him kissing his boyfriend. Bravo Foxtrot Delta.

Big smile on my face reading these reviews! Boston looks to be the place for me to catch the 'mats this year, as my younger brother has ungraciously decided to get married in California the first weekend of August.

Wow! Best video I've seen from any of the reunion shows and wonderful performance. Visually, yes. But I'd rather hear Paul sing the song instead of the dude standing next to the cameraman.

Shaky Knees was my first Replacements show and I was so pleased. Getting all wet only added to the fun.

Nice review: www.americansongwriter.com/2014/05/5-best-moments-shaky-knees-music-festival/All those rave reviews of Replacements shows on the internet are more than just praise from diehard fans, the Mats are legitimately one of the best touring acts around this year. Typical bad luck for the Mats, right before the band took the stage, the weather took a turn for the worse, and for a moment it seemed like the show might not happen. Fortunately the rain let up just in time to enjoy what was obviously the best show of the entire weekend. The setlist was everything a diehard fan could want. Chock full of hits from their post-punk masterpieces Let It Be and Tim, along with some rarities from their 1981 debut Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash (“Customer” was a highlight), fans barely had time to catch their breath between sing-alongs.

I'm still buzzing after the Shaky Knees Fest on Sat! I'm glad to see this great website is still here! I haven't been here in years - I'm no longer 'MikeinSF' since I moved to Atlanta 6 months ago I think the last time I posted was after Paul's acoustic set at the Virgin Megastore in SF where he tried to strangle some heckler - where has the time gone? I posted my blurry iPhone pics here in case anyone wants to check them out (https://www.facebook.com/doormatmike/media_set?set=a.10152110454888870.1073741829.561203869&type=3) As folks before me have stated - the guys sounded awesome. I had my younger brother with me who had never seen the Mats before but knew their tunes since I made him cassette tapes when he was in single digits! He was stoked and I was stoked. We managed to get pretty close, braved the insane rain downpour and then enjoyed the show... the mix was muddy at first but got better and better. The guys were having fun and the crowd contained a lot of die-hards which was great. I'm not a huge Green Day fan and wish BJA was not there but at least he knows his role and stays out of the spotlight. Paul and Dave can cover axe duties just fine in my book so I don't feel BJA is needed (?). Josh F is great on the tubs and Tommy was awesome. I can't believe how good Paul's voice sounds - he's singing like he's in his 20s and I noticed he's messed around with the phrasing in certain tunes and sings with even more gusto! See them if you can! I have a work trip in Seattle over Labor Day Weekend so I'm def planning on seeing them again at Bumbershoot! Mike
