Now whether or not I like it all is another question. Yes, very true. I can't say I really dig 5:05. But, I paid $5 for it, and just 49 cents for 49:00. I could bitch about the $5 I spent for 5:05, or say, wow, I paid just 49 cents for 49:00, and it all evens out. I have some bootlegs I got off file sharing and stuff...for free. I owe him just for that. Lets face it, those of us here are here cause we are HUGE fans. Paul owes us nothing, and he'd be the first to tell us that if we were to say he did.

To me this release serves as a missing link that shines a light on or fills in spaces in his creative process...for me.
It's entertaining to me and I'm thankful to him for putting it out.

....As much as Paul baffles us, I think we probably baffle him as well, or we would if he read the Web, which he doesn't, thankfully. One person thinks the Tom Waits stuff is great; another feels ripped off...if you're the artist what do you do with that information? I think the only response that would allow you to maintain your sanity is put out stuff that you believe in and do your best not to get caught up in the reaction, difficult as that is. Oh yeah, I think Paul is smart enough not to want to know what the fans are thinking. If you read enough interviews of musicians, you know that a lot of them don't care to know what the fans think. Guys like Neil Young and Warren Zevon never let the what the fans think enter into their minds when they're creating. Zevon, in the documentary of his recording session as he was diagnosed as terminal, recounts how he did log on once to see what the fans were talking about since the news of his diagnosis. He said it was a big mistake and that he never should have done it after reading how some people were damn near canonizing him for stopping treatments, as if he were some sort of rebel. Anyway, while I understand why some folks are itching to hear newer material than back of the vault, archivist/collector's stuff, I still feel that Paul is just giving us a taste for now and that this is just the tip of the iceberg. I mean, c'mon! He just handed over 5 albums worth of material??!!! Talk about prolific! And so I gotta think these latest downloadables are just an appetizer, a teaser, and we're gonna get a lot more of some good, new stuff.

I hope you're right, Free Rider. All this material feels like foreplay to me--and as much as I've enjoyed it, if we don't get a "traditional" release (IE, something that doesn't tantalize by giving you little snippets of brilliance) then I am going to be very let down. Though with that said, any westy is good westy

Coincidence that this Tom Waits material is being released now, direct to fans via download? I just saw an article today about how Waits is doing paperless ticketing for concerts, in order to try to eliminate the secondary market. I wonder if Paul and Tom have been talking again recently about marketing (!) and the topic of these old songs came up...

I like 3oclockreep way more than 49:00. To me it sounds like almost all of it except for "Finally Here Once" (and maybe "You're Still Mine") is from the same time frame as the drunken Waits session. Paul's voice sounds pretty 1989 on everything except those two. The way Paul smiles his way through "Everyone Wants to be Famous" almost sounds like he's reading somebody else's lyrics. Don't those lyrics sound like Waits more than Westerberg? And "Finally Here Once" is my favorite INXS song.

Great observation clams. I hadn't given it too much thought before now. "Everybody Wants to be Famous" could be either Westerberg or Waits, they both put a lot of humor in their songs.
However, I think "Only Excuse Is" could have been recorded even before 1989. Paul sounds so young (and so great) on this track.
Paul may be a closet INXS fan, but "Finally Here Once" is one of the best songs on all these recent basement releases.

Anyone notice that he appears to be wearing a Boston Red Sox home jersey in the cover art? Does anyone care?

With my CD collection being in chronological order, I'm not ashamed to say Tim sits beside Listen Like Thieves.

Sorry, I haven't read most of the other posts on this thread, just wanted to shout at the top of my lungs "Once, I was cast as a happy go lucky guy/Now I've been demoted to an old sad stay inside!"
I WAS FINALLY HERE ONCE (believe me, I've been there, ever so briefly...)
Long Live Paul! (On behalf of all the aging but defiant indie rockers), and since we're at it, Mozilla Firefox.

All of this seems like its from the 80s, except of course for the snippets of "Finally Here Once", "Backlash", "We are the Normal", etc.). Everything about his vocals seems mid-late Mats-esque...the sound and tone of his voice, the style in which he sings, the specific type of plaintiveness on "Only Excuse Is" (how terrific is that song, by the way?) I can't say how much I love these twenty minutes. Despite the similar editing style to 49:00, it's as different as can be from that record. I like 3oclockreep better, but they're both tremendous releases. Good time to be a Paul/Mats fan.

Yikes! I just caught up on some MWT site reading on this topic and, man, it's like a war zone out there- it doesn't exactly feel friendly to me. Am I being too touchy or does this feel a little bit too much like the latest political skirmishes going on out there?
Personally, as a long time Westerberg/Mats fan I love some of the latest Westerberg download stuff and I think some of it sucks (and in the future I may reverse my feelings about some of those cuts- it's happened before). But so what? Isn't it ok to not be a sycophant who tries to drool over every note. I doubt that P.W. wants his fans to be that way. And isn't it ok (yes, it's allowed but is it OK?) to voice one's opinions here even if they go against the majority? Isn't dissension and dissatisifaction what fueled a lot of this music from its very inception?
Sorry, don't mean to chew ass here but, really...

Beautifully said I have much more respect for someone who questions than blindly accepts everything. (Not just talking about PW here. Just in a general sort of way.) I don't think that makes one a contrarian or an infidel or whatever. I don't even think the posts here were that critical.
