100%. And he, of all his contemporaries, is the guy who has disproven the gear heads—it’s the song that matters. It’s ineffable and weird, but you know it when you hear it, and Paul had it. Yeah, I think he was leaning into his persona a little on this one, and I think he cares more about his guitars and amps than he let on. This is the guy who had six or seven specific guitars lined up on stage, each numbered, some in alternate tunings, so that he knows: "For these three songs, I'll use #1, then I'll switch to #2 for this song"...That's not a guy who doesn't care what he plays. And he was always very vocal about avoiding "pointy" guitars, which seems to me to just be a personal preference based on cosmetics... I agree with this. If Paul really didn't care he would have just played cheap pawn shop junk, but he almost always played nice Gibsons. I have that "Waxed Up Hair" book and there's a photo of Paul playing in a backyard kegger band before he even met the Stinsons. And he's playing a nice Gibson 335. That's NOT a guitar a novice would use...

I doubt Richard Blade had any interest in The Mats, or anything from college radio during its heyday in the 80s, he seemed to gravitate to British New Wave. By the time I left L.A., I heard enough of Blade on KROQ, maybe half a year. I used to listen to the station when it had Frazier Smith and every now and then would listen to Rodney Bingenheimer, an interesting character to say the least, I saw him by himself in a tiny club where an unknown Goo Goo Dolls were playing for a Gavin Convention one year. I first heard the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Devo, in the late 70s on his radio show. Rodney B is still around but not on KROQ anymore. Every time I go to Canters Deli I see Rodney sitting in his booth....

Just realized this interview was done the day before Kurt Cobain committed suicide. Had always heard that Bob became obsessed with Nirvana the last year of his life.

In that World Class Fad music video there's a scene where Westerberg is singing & playing guitar in front of a mirror making him appear left handed. There's also that line "I believe these stars are starting to shoot". I could see how Kurt would think those were aimed at him....

I'm actually surprised that Rolling Stone didn't put Morrison on that list. After all they practically started that whole Doors revival in the early 80s with that "He's Hot, He's Sexy, He's Dead" cover!

Okay, so I bought my copy today and just finished reading the booklet and listened to most of the cd's. This might be the best of the Mats reissues so far. But I have one complaint and I can't believe Rhino did this. On the the back cover they GLUED the list of songs over the 4 classic photos of Paul,Bob, Chris, & Tommy. So I tried to carefully peel it off and of course it left the back cover damaged. There's a big glue spot near Paul's face and another one near Tommy's legs. WHY THE HELL WOULD RHINO DO THIS?!?! Did anyone else have the same experience with their copies?? My copies of the DMP & PTMM box sets were not done like this....

Not a sighting but it would be cool if we had one of Paul at the Stones tonight. Caught an LA show and it was great. Paul would enjoy, imo🙂 I wonder if the Mats would reunite one last time if they could open for the Stones??🤔

So has anyone bought or received their box set yet?? I went to Amoeba here in LA and I couldn't find it. So I asked an employee to help me. The employee was really nice, but it turns out they only received 2 (!!!) and both had been bought by the time I got there about 8pm. How the hell does Rhino only send out 2 copies to one of the most popular music stores on the West Coast?? My next day off isn't till Wednesday so guess I'm gonna have to wait till then.....😡

If you look at the back of Tim, Paul is playing a 50s Les Paul Special and Bob is playing a late 70s Les Paul. The thing about those guys is that they would break their gear all the time. So who knows what they used on Let it Be. There definitely is a 12 string Rickenbacher(Peter Buck's) on I Will Dare!

I watching an episode of the Simpsons and there was a reference to a "Mexican Bar Mitzvah". So I wondered if it was a Mats reference. Ya know that line in Asking Me Lies? So I looked up the writer, a guy named Dan Vebber. Turns out he was a writer on Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. Coincidence? I think not!😅

I remember back after the Mats broke up Paul signed a publishing deal and he said he was literally a "millionaire for one day". After the lawyers & agents got their cut he used the $ to buy his house....

I guess that there are diminishing returns on sales for aging artists. I remember reading about Steely Dan saying they had to hit the road and tour because money from sales and other royalties were diminishing quickly over time. So yeah, I guess that streaming is the go-to now, and they can get performance royalties from Sirius Radio and Spotify and the other platforms. As far as Paul, we've had this conversation before with his publishing deal, can't believe that was 11 years ago. paulwesterberg.proboards.com/thread/6702 yeah, I saw an interview a couple of yrs ago with Michael McDonald where he basically said the same thing about having to tour at his age because of a lack of incoming royalties. I mean this guy had HUGE hits with the Doobies and on his own. You would think he was set for the rest of his life.....

Dee Sninder supposedly really cleaned up selling a majority interest in his catalog - which for the sake of value is basically 2 big songs. Dude can live like a king and die rich off 2 metal anthems he wrote in 1984. Did he have 2? I can only think of the one... We're Not Gonna Take It and I Wanna Rock. The I Wanna Rock music video was shot at the local high school in my neighborhood. Some of my old school friends are in the crowd scenes....

Minehan actually plays Hi-Tone amps. Hi-Tone is an American boutique amp company that tries to recreate the classic sounds of 60s and 70s Hiwatt Amps.

Pleasantly surprised by the Tommy songs...wonder why songs like these and "Satellite" didn't make it onto Bash & Pop's debut. When I saw Bash & Pop in 1993, somebody called out for Satellite and Tommy rolled his eyes, saying, "That's ancient history...I'm sick of it." When I saw Bash & Pop in Oct of 93 they played it pretty early in their set. Tommy said "this is the only Replacements song we're gonna do". As if to say "dont bother asking for Mats tunes"

Did Alex Chilton have children? Big Star is really great but I was not aware that he had kids He had a son named Timothee who is about 50 now. I think he is currently serving time in prison.

Paul wrote songs about both of them. Both died (relatively) young in New Orleans. Both had sons that would later serve prison time....

Lol perfect! Did your comments touch on their shipping reputation? No, my comments were tame. At one point I said MTV was lame for not playing the video for the Ledge back in the day....
