The Goo Goo Dolls were an OK band back in the day. I still have vinyl records, haven't played them in years. I remember seeing them in a little San Francisco club during the Gavin Convention (radio) and this was back when they were playing in bare feet. Rodney Bingenheimer was standing behind me, hung out for a couple of songs, then walked out. I once read an interview describing when the Goo Goo Dolls opened for the 'Mats; one time before the band came out to play, the 'Mats carpeted the stage with stickers, gummy side up, so when their opening act came out in bare feet, the stickers stuck to the bottoms of their feet, eventually creating large paper snowshoes. But I assume these guys knew each other, more than mere acquaintances. Resnick once gave Westerberg a Gibson ES-355, nice guitar. Rodney B probably didnt like the Goo Goo Dolls cuz there was no cute girls in the band. Lol

I remember the night this aired. I still have the VHS tape i recorded it on. I had gone to a Dodger game in the aftenoon, so i was pretty sunburned. Lol. This clip and the Mats appearance on SNL are probably my 2 favorite live TV rock n roll moments.

Stoked for this, but I wish the Cheap Trick cover wasn't an instrumental. I remember when they did that on that tour, it was killer. Cheap Trick did not originally write and perform "Speak Now...". Terry Reid did. And since Westerberg and Stinson (fans of Reid) both met Reid at a session for All Shook Down, I'm assuming he covered it as a Reid song I was lucky enough to see Slim and his band in LA in Oct of 93. Terry Reid got on stage and sang a song or two.

At one point someone shouts out a request, and Paul responds "we have to retune for that one". Can any one hear what song was requested? I cant quite make it out.

Someone shouts out for Easier Said Than Done, a song they were known to cover.

I did not know that Spirit! That is awesome. I think the Thunders song is better too anyway. To continue the theme somewhat of bands slagging each other (and pull it back around to Hood in a way) you also have Skynryd calling out Neil Young in 'Sweet Home Alabama'. DBTs on Southern Rock Opera repeat the legend that Neil was a pallbearer at Ronnie's funeral. Honorable mention to the Stones for Mick ad-libbing in some live versions of 'Star Star': "Jimmy Page was quite the rage. I could not see the reason why." Yup, i just double checked my CD. Steve Jones,, Paul Cook, and Phil Lynott all play on London Boys. About the Skynryd thing ....Im pretty sure Ronnie Van Zant is wearing a Neil Young shirt during their Cal Jam set.

Nice to see some spirited discussion on the board! I agree, Hood's take sort of makes it look like Petty was taking a shot at the Mat's with 'Wide Open' even as he praises the artfulness of it. I just don't think his viewpoint holds water when you look at the lyrics. This reminds me of those tenuous arguments claiming that Paul's World Class Fad was about Cobain. Or was it?? Round Two.... Ah what the hell...can we agree that the best jab between musicians was Lennon's 'How do you sleep?' aimed at McCartney? Of course, I also like Thunders nailing the Pistols with 'London Boys' In response to 'New York'. The coolest thing about the Thunders tune is that he got Paul Cook and Steve Jones to play on it.

Just got back from Amoeba in Hollywood. They were already out of the vinyl when i got there. I bought the CD and then the cashier guy asked me if i wanted the cut out, so of course i said yes. I am sooo stupid, i should have asked for a second one , he probably wouldve given it to me.

About 2006, i was working at an Old Navy outlet. For one month the in-store CD featured "I Will Dare". That same CD also had "Lost" by the Meat Puppets and a couple of New York Dolls songs. Usually the instore CDs were crappy top 40, so for that one month i almost enjoyed working there.
