From RollingStone.com: www.rollingstone.com/music/news/the-replacements-reunite-for-covers-ep-20121003For the first time since 2006, the Replacements have recorded new songs. In late September, singer Paul Westerberg and bassist Tommy Stinson spent a day in a Minneapolis studio and cut four cover songs that will be released later this year as a limited edition 10-inch vinyl EP. All 250 copies will auctioned online, and the proceeds will benefit Slim Dunlap, the Replacements' guitarist from 1987 to 1991, who had a severe stroke in February. Replacements drummer Chris Mars "didn't want any part of this" reunion, Westerberg tells Rolling Stone. "I was not surprised, but I was a little disappointed." In Mars' place, Peter Anderson drummed, and Kevin Bowe (who was in Westerberg's solo band the last time he toured, in 2005) played guitar. With characteristic eclecticism, the Replacements recorded Dunlap's "Busted Up," "Everything's Coming Up Roses" from the Broadway musical Gypsy, Gordon Lightfoot's 1965 song "I'm Not Sayin'" and "Lost Highway" by Hank Williams. "Tommy and I strapped on guitars, not a word was said, and bang," says Westerberg. "We still rock like murder." Westerberg has been ambivalent about a Replacements reunion since the band broke up in 1991, but he was persuaded by Dunlap's enthusiasm. "He's in rough shape. He's sort of paralyzed, he can move his leg a little bit. When I mentioned this, it seemed like something he really wanted to happen. 'You guys get together,' he said in a whisper. 'Go play a song.'" Does this one-day reunion augur a new tour or album from the Replacements, one of the best American bands of the Eighties? "It's possible," Westerberg says. "After playing with Tommy last week, I was thinking, 'All right, let's crank it up and knock out a record like this.' I'm closer to it now than I was two years ago, let's say that."

Obviously I'm down with the cause, but dammit..."limited edition 10-inch vinyl EP...all 250 copies will be auctioned online." That counts me out of the game. On two counts. Poor and no record player.
Anyway, I'm really curious as to how those last three songs could in any way be made to "rock like murder." Too bad about Chris.

Best damn news I've read from Westerberg in a long long time!
Don't worry those songs will be all over the web.

It's good to hear Paul sounding up beat about it all. Seems like he wants to rock again. He and Tommy should just form a "new" band with a new name. Let's face it, the Mats can never be again. They are different people now, too many years have gone by. But - a new band could kick ass without the pressure of the old name. "Ladies and Gentlemen ........... DOG BREATH!

I'd LOVE to have them tour together just under their own names. A solo set from each maybe and then a 'Mats set? Or just throw them all together. Something tells me there's no way I'm going to be able to afford one of these records but man I want one so bad.

Excited to hear the Gord cover for sure. Nice to see Paul show some spirit. As a vinyl lover I think it's great. Vinyl rules. They'll go fast.
Agreed - a PW/TS tour under anything but The Replacements name where they play their own stuff and some back catalog would be great!

Lightfooot's I'm Not Sayin', I couldn't have picked a better song for them to do. Lost Highway's not too shabby either. I'm very jazzed about this! It's such a great cause too. I'll do my best. All you can give is what you have so I'll be out of luck. It isn't going to be cheap, that's for sure.

I have a record player and can transfer music to a computer. If anyone wins a bid, I'll make the transfer for them and promise not to keep a copy of the transfer for myself. ;D
250 copies...I have to wonder if all 250 will go for big bucks. Of the main regulars that haunt this board, what are we in numbers....less than 50? Will there be 250 mega fans with mega thick wallets? (Besides Billie Joe Armstrong)

well, I won't lie.. I want one real bad too, but its tough because if I break the bank for the EP then what am I to do when they tour and play only a handful of shows..? I'm going to want to buy a plane ticket to wherever to see them and thats going to be pretty costly as well....
Eh whatever! there are some people who pay ALOT of money and camp outside waiting in lines for a new iphone or stuff like that- then there are some who would do it to get to see Westerberg up on stage again. Count me in the latter crowd.

Best unexpected news I've had in a long time! I, too, will most likely be out of contention for the 250 EPs, but I'll watch like a hawk to see when the auction starts just in case a few hunnerd'll take one of the higher-numbered copies. Any word yet on when that may be?
