So is Mars still doing original artwork for this project, or is he completely out? I hope he just didn't want to play on these tracks (which is still hugely disappointing, since he's clearly still playing music).

If we can trust Rolling Stone, they are apparently. The first line of the article is, "For the first time since 2006, the Replacements have recorded new songs."

This is cool. I hope they raise a bundle. Somebody should let that eBay lady know from a few years back. She'll spend some coin.
I, on the other hand, will wait with the poor folk...

It's good to hear Paul sounding up beat about it all. Seems like he wants to rock again. He and Tommy should just form a "new" band with a new name. Let's face it, the Mats can never be again. They are different people now, too many years have gone by. But - a new band could kick ass without the pressure of the old name. "Ladies and Gentlemen ........... DOG BREATH! Hear, hear. Let a sleeping dog lie. But a new band? A new band could start some shit...

Absolutely fantastic news. This, along with Paul's resurfacing with "My Road Now" a while back, has made these days more easy passing. Definitely going on a Replacements bender in recognition of this momentous event.

Maybe they'll do Everything's Coming Up straight up. I remember from live video shot in Rotterdam that Paul and Tommy sang Hello Dolly while trying to pick some chick that caught their eye. Or perhaps they'll rock it up ... www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzsMGJ2Nw6oPaul has always had a fondness for Tin Pan Alley. The piano ballads always seem to lean in this direction, The Last being one case in point.

Why was'nt slim included when they recorded two new songs for the 'best of' cd 5 or 6 years ago?

Great news but why such a small limited number of albums? Very frustrating. I hope Paul reconsiders and ups the number of albums produced. Letting only the wealthiest 250 be able to help out AND get the record just doesn't seem right to me.

I love that Jesperson is involved, too.
Part of me doesn't blame Chris if he never plays drums behind Paul again, but c'mon...it's for the cause of Slim!

OBTW, BTW ...
Was I the only one who hit the ceiling (and oh what a feeling) when I read that Steve Earle is going to cover Slim? Holy awesome jayzus! I died, went to heaven, and came back. That's better than Rolling Rocks and percocet.
Someone in the loop should spread the word to Steve ... I remember having some long conversations with Slim back in the late 90's during his last "tour" ... He told me at the time that he had another album's worth of tunes ready to go. I was psyched. I absolutely still love Old New Me & Times Like This. I carry them around on my iPhone like security blankets.
Anyway, someone should have a chat with Slim and/or Chrissie. There's a Mermaid Avenue opportunity in there for someone. And if it's the Hardcore Troubadour himself who takes up the torch ... OMFG ... I'll buy a hundred worth, drop the bottle opener and swear off the perkies.
Woo frickin hooooo!

In my excitement reading that post from The Current linked above, I didn't fully take in the lineup of other acts signed on for these Slim singles.
1. The Replacements 2. NRBQ 3. Steve Earle 4. Lucinda Williams 5. Jakob Dylan 6. John Doe 7. Ramblin' Jack Elliott 8. The Hold Steady 9. Deer Tick 10. The Jayhawks 11. Tim O'Reagan & Jim Boquist 12. Chris Mars 13. Curtiss A. with Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey & friends 14. The Young Fresh Fellows 15. Tommy Keene 16. You Am I 17. Joe Henry 18. Frank Black & The Suicide Commandos

Interesting that Chris Mars will do a single . . . but declined to be part of the Mats' single. Plus: Frank Black & The Suicide Commandos?!?!?!!
