i've acquired a bunch of stuff via ebay:
let it be on vinyl (blue) grandpaboy vinyl 7" looking out forever/final hurrah jukebox 45 that bash & pop/his name is alive split 45 (blue) another bash & pop 45 with "situation" westerberg's 14 songs "book" etc.
lots of husker du, dillinger 4, strike, etc. vinyl, too. i keep "watching" those suicaine cardboard box thingies, but never get around to bidding. the only trouble i have had was with my winning bid on the "stink" colored vinyl (i think it was grey). the seller told me his dog had chewed it up, and could not sell it to me as it was. i knew it was bullshit, and someone contacted him with a secret higher bid, so i replied to the seller saying i would gladly pay my winning bid + shipping just to have the pieces of it. he never replied. fvcking transparent asshole.

you two. quick, get into "avatar thunderdome". you can't both use that!
i have only heard horseshoes & handgrenades, and i think it is forkin' great. i remember actually seeing the video for "monkey sees" way back when. it was funny.

not to nitpick, but westy/stinson are more of a guitarist who sings/guitarist who sings combo.
guy/ian (from fugazi)?

If he was a closet 'mats fan, i like him even less. Anybody that is a "closet" 'mats fan needs to realize that they were better than all the bands they admit to liking. Kurt was a loser anyways.......who needs 'em while harsh, i agree with this sentiment.

the song is clearly about us; the fans.

definitely not just a texas thing anymore. it is broadcast most anywhere. although, truth be told, i have a hard time pinning down when it is broadcast here in mpls (if at all anymore). i know it used to be.
anyway, some of my favorite musicians/bands have played it.

i always assumed lucia was conscious of the chris mars reference in the title to that show. I thought that was pretty damn funny. yeah, me too. plus i fvcking love that mars song, and the album is no slouch either.

Oh, and I meant painful as in the shaving scene and getting kicked around the bus. when i said "oh. dear sweet lord.", i was talking about how FVCKING terrible this show appears to be. (paul's songs notwithstanding of course...)

the day paul writes a concept record is the day i stop listening to him...his approach has always been one prone to simply letting whats inside fly out, sometimes for the hell of it, and sometimes cause he's got something on his mind...and his sogs have always had a sens of ambiguity, which has left them open for interpretation, he has spoken about not writing songs too specific....there are exceptions of course..."things" "good day" etc...but the whole feel of mono is him just getting his mojo back, and not trying, just doing....and AAA just seems a song sprouting from literaly feeling like you aint got nothing left to add to the equation......this seems obvious....paul's a much better writer than one who decides "i am going to write about "X".." inspiration comes from all sources, and paul strongest material is fresh because it lacks a contrived bone....and does anyone really think he writes a song about us fans??? i think that's pretty silly, and terribley vain on our part...que carly simon song hey man, all we are doing is hypothesizing. i'm not reading it one way or another out of effing vanity, dude. and i am certainly NOT convinced that paul is totally devoid of contrivances. i have loooong felt some of his vocal croaks at strategic moments (here comes a regular comes to mind) are pure theater. it doesn't affect my love of the song. i think the heart is pure, but there are times the delivery is just that... the delivery. there are a lot of somewhat contrived moments on dtas, too. i still love the album. not to mention "strike down the band" and all the little interludes on folker that seem to tell a story. come on. i'm wasn't claiming to have the answer, but do you really think you have it? let's just have some fun with the analysis. (by the way, i had never considered blasty's thing, and i just love that interpretation.)

robot talk aside, i think paul really WAS thinking, maybe not specifically about us, but about his legacy at the time. mono was the first shot across the bow after what could be termed a failure with suicaine.
he might have been wondering if fans would still be there for him. he has mentioned a couple of times that "high time" was the first song he wrote after a couple of years. and that is clearly a song about moving on... and he was still married at that point.
moving on from what? if not his mats-obsessed fans, maybe the expectations that go along with being paul westerberg?
maybe it makes more sense if you think of it as a kiss off to the expectations, and not the fans. i think it makes more sense if i think of it that way.

Scooter. I'm going to have to go with "full of shit" because any musician that thought that much about their fans would have to be some kind of crazy diva-like robot. i am soooo gonna sick mariahbot v.5.1 on you for that. she's the one with malfunctioning "diva chip". you're toast, sister.

the song is a poison pen valentine to us. the fans. we don't belong to different worlds, there's nothing wrong with us whatsoever....which I have always taken as a bold-faced lie, or a sarcastic slam almost all of mono strikes me as a message to the fans: it's high time i let you slide ... ("you" being the stuck in the past fans) i would do anything... but that. (becoming the 'mats front man again) knock it right out... make a lotta money... (sort of a mission statement for 'mono') let's not belong together... (see above) take your diet pills, how many have you got, kiss you on the cheek, leave you in the parking lot... i ain't got anything to say to anyone anymore... (self explainatory) mono is a concept album about paul's sometimes strained relationship with his long-time fans who sometimes have a hard time letting him do what he wants; instead pining for paul relive his 'mats days. or i could be just totally full of shit.
