i agree on all of these, and the demo version of 16 blue. i "acquired" all of these many moons ago, and they are awesome, and need to be on an expanded version of l.i.b. i do have a pregunta por favor about the song "walk a little closer" that i have never had sufficiently answered: just who the hell is singing that one? I don't believe that that version of "Walkin' a Little Closer" is even the Mats- It's a short clip of the song "Walking", by Soul Asylum, from their album "Say What You Will, Clarence...Karl Sold the Truck" Listen to a clip hereI could be wrong, but I understand that it was mistakenly included on the LIB outtakes. right, that's what i think, too. that's what mine sounds like, but i am curious if there actually is a mats song called "walking a little closer", and that maybe those of us who dl-ed like mad during napster's free reign got a bogus copy of the loud fast rules song. i guess we will find out when l.i.b. is "expanded". (whoa. i think my lib just expanded thinking about this song!)

If Tim is sonically improved and includes "Nowhere is my Home" at the least, I'm happy! My Boink vinyl is getting worn out... i don't even care about the sound of tim (actually, yes i do), but give me a good, clean version of nimh & i will be a happy fanboy. basically, yeah, i agree. still, i would LOVE to have doubled versions of ptmm & tim. my version of po box is a little crummy, too.

i'm not suggesting that you should like them, kathy, but for what it is worth i resisted them mightily for a long time. i didn't like lifter puller, either, and that is something to say coming from a mpls music consumer/scenester such as myself (less so these days).
anyway, i finally busted down & bought "separation sunday" a few months ago, and for some reason i fell in love with it.
it's still the only hs album i own, but i can see myself buying more now. it just took awhile for something to click in my brain.

right, she is awesome. has 4 or 5 albums already (maybe even more). seek out 'avalanche' & 'songs from the gutter'. her albums have a couple throwaway songs on them, but overall this girl is ON.
her version of the clash's 'i'm not down' is fanfuckintastic.

Westerberg wrote "Born for Me"," Best Thing that Never Happened" & all of his greatest misses post Replacements, not Laurie Lindeen. Sheesh. right. this is good information. i should bookmark this thread for future reference. and some are about specific people. he has written a TON of songs, but i wouldn't call many of his songs "pure fiction". it's not like he's been writing rock operas or something. his life & relationships pretty clearly at the very minimum "color" nearly all of his songs. of course, this is just my opinion... i should mention that the degree of fiction or composites in his songs doesn't change what i said in my last post on this thread a bit. he still has the power to make me uncomfortable with his lyrics. a rare artist, because this is a VERY good thing. i'm not sure what this even means, but ok. see above.

I'd tend to agree. Besides, songs songs are about women the singer doesn't "have".... I'd guess more songs are about yearning for what you don't have as opposed to celebrating what you do have. i agree that paul is more subtle & sly than to just write song after song about someone so literally, but one thing paul does better than anyone i know is make me uncomfortable when he sings about anyone. i'd say he rarely "celebrates" someone or some relationship, but sometimes the emotion he throws out there is so raw & unguarded that i wince. and sometimes when i do feel like he is singing about his wife, i feel like i am the one getting punched in the gut. it's an interesting feeling.

in an abstract way, she "wrote" most of his material; post replacements. I'm not so sure she'd want to lay claim to that one. probably not, but true nonetheless...

You are not implying that Battlestar Gallactica fans would like rush, are you? humble apologies but I was not strong enough to resist. *shakes head* some battlestar galactica fans love the clash, the replacements & x, too. i understand if this is hard to wrap your head around, but suffice it to say you would alternately wet your pants in glee & run away horrified if you saw my itunes library. edit: and only a chimp can truly not resist.

i'm not at all passing judgement on anyone because musical taste is subjective, but these responses sort of prove my point. or rather illustrate what i was getting at. these are the broadside generalizations we have been sold for years about this band (i mean, when the media talks about them - which is next to never). interesting.
one of the biggest mats/soul asylum/husker du/bad brains/etc. fans i ever met was the biggest mullet wearing trans am driving burnout you ever could hope to meet in 1987.

... the memory of highschool burnouts in baggy army jackets and Rush baseball shirts smoking cigs by the school cafeteria dumpster... i meant to mention this yesterday, but i think you perfectly described the pilot episode of 'freaks & geeks'.

anyone who knows me will not be surprised by this response, but i think one of the most underappreciated bands of all time is rush. i'm not asking you to like them, but just hear me out:
22 records (all gold or better) 30 some years in existence without a line up change STILL playing shows in basketball/hockey arenas
blah blah blah. i mean, it's weird. they NEVER get write ups in mags like rs (just in "musician" rags), have never been voted into the r & r hof (i don't think they have ever been on the ballot).
yes, i like rush, but i'm not asking you to. i'm just asking you to wonder with me about why it is this band is utterly ignored by the msm.
p.s. did you know they released a new album yesterday?

Which member of Semisonic was it? doesn't the drummer handle key duties in that band?
