I've been listening to Wild Stab almost exclusively since it was released. I really like it a lot. It may be Paul's most successful mix of song craft and loose rock and roll and has a nice intimate recording style. Many very good songs, a few excellent, no clunkers. Great melodies throughout. I always have to repeat Sorry for Tomorrow Night at least once after it finishes. I love that song. It really would have been a shame if Hands Together was never heard. As overly cute as 1/2 2 P might be, it really is a catchy song. Back is another great song. If Juliana Hatfield's only contribution had been to get Paul to put these songs out, that would have been enough. But, her backing vocal touches are well placed and welcome. Even if a lot of the time her vocal lines are simply following Paul, their voices blend well. I'd like to hear them do more together.

Actually thinking of producing a video for KOA... If I had time or skills, I would do a video of King of America which would just be the song playing over a mash-up of clips of Judge Rheinhold's character Brad from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I'm pretty sure that song was secretly inspired by that character. There would be the scene where Brad is wearing the ridiculous Pirate uniform playing when Paul sings about wearing a uniform, the scene from the end of the movie when Brad throws coffee into a convenience store robber's face when Paul mentions not having a gun, and several shiots when when Paul talks about being laughs at in the opening verse. I'd have Phoebe Cates stepping out of the pool, taking off her top, and mouthing 'King of America' during each chorus. Yeah, that's what I'd do.

FarmerTed...too funny and great visuals. Mine would be a mash-up of Paul and a ton of notables singing the tune, ala Sgt Peppers and then the very last note starts to skip for 30-mins straight just to milk that $1 per second contest:)

Wow. I wasn't expecting to like this album as much as I do. I can't stop playing it. I would kill to see them live. I think a J. Kimmel or J. Fallon show appearance would really make my day. Paul said with Peter Wolf that Juliana took some of the solos. I wish I knew the breakdown of that.
Favorites so far - Wear Me Out Loud. Born For Me - very catchy and is the one they perform on late nite if you ask me. Little People - this one slays me. So original and I really dig the bass line. Need The Guys is so Mats like. King of America - very different. Whole Lotta Nothin - might be my favorite. And lastly Dance to the Fight - I kinda wish there was another one with Juliana taking the lead on this album. Her backing vocals add a lot to this album as well.
I could not be more thrilled hearing this whole thing. I didn't think he had it in him to do something so raw and inspired like this. Hope there's more I Don't Cares to come!

I finally got to hear it all the way thru...and I like it. While I'm not a fan of Juliana's voice on lead vocals, she DOES have a great harmony blend with Paul's voice. It really adds something to some of those songs to have a back up vocal to Paul.
Whole Lotta Nothin' - has become an ear worm that cannot be stopped this morning 'everybody hit delete' keeps going thru my head!
Dance to the Fight - one chord change is reminiscent of Footsteps
Love Out Loud - also the one part is reminiscent of IOU, drawing out the vowel
Hands Together - wow, a really interesting way to end the CD, and bringing in some of Paul's poignancy.
King of America - this one resonated in the imagery. In my early youth, I also pushed a broom, a mop and bucket and cleaned toilets. Big difference was, I was going to graduate from college---a lot of other guys? This kind of life was it for them. Also, I think this is the best sounding recording, if this is an outtake from Eventually and not a re-worked demo.
The drums, though, are still a little problematic for me, but it's minor. Paul really likes working that high hat in the same pattern, though!

Wow, I had a similar kind of visual running thru my head but was more along this crazy political season. Made me think of someone supporting Bernie Sanders or Trump because they're fed up. But the Fast Times thing would be great.....! I have waited in your long lines I have sweat beneath your sun I’ve kicked ’round in your factories I did it all without a gun Now it’s my time to runEvery boy dreams to be....

Maybe I should have started a new thread for this question, but oh well. Yesterday, a few new photos appeared from Josh Freese of some recording in Paul's basement. Could he already be doing a followup to Wild Stab?

I see Paul's drums as just a percussion instrument to keep time. Like a tambourine. It doesn't bother at all probably because I'm not a drummer or musician. It's got a real DIY feel to it which I like. I hope this album gets a lot of attention because everything in popular music is just so slick these days. Radio needs songs like these.

I felt the same way initially about Paul's drumming, but after he's released, what 50 or so (otherwise great) tunes with the same basic pattern and tinny sound? Yeah, it's hard for me to overlook.

Yes, the DIY ethos is fine...I just don't want it all the time on the drumming I am glad that Josh Freese is posting pics of PW on his instagram page, because it makes me think, "yes! Paul needs Josh's drumming for whatever else he's doing! I hope that is why Josh is there taking a photo." I wouldn't say I'm a musician but I do have a musical education and play (albeit very amateurish and clunky) and I would say that a really good drummer can add so much more to the song than what Paul is doing with his simple pattern with that high hat. A good drummer can provide so much more color to the song. That's what I hope for as well, but I doubt it. Corporate radio sucks and I'm not even sure if indie stations or college radio will play it. A buddy of mine listens to KALX out of UC Berkeley and he hears a lot of stuff---occasional Mats---but never any solo PW and hasn't heard anything from this latest release.

I'm thinking Paul, Juliana and Josh Freese all together = touring version of "The I Don't Cares." Less likely that they are recording more tunes, but that would be good news too!

That's what I'm thinking as well. I would be just as excited to see this tour as I was for the Mats recent one. I'm hoping for at least a late night TV appearance. I have one wish if they do tour. No Mats songs please. I want to hear solo stuff, particularly from 49:00. Devil Raised a Good Boy for an encore? Everything Goes Wrong? I can get behind that. Let there be rock!

I'd like no Mats songs as well. Since the Mats reunion, I have been saying that I think Paul should be able to play whatever the hell he wants on all future non-Mats tours. He gave us all something we never thought we'd get, so if he wants to retire Mats songs now, I'm completely on board for that. The fact that Freese is already home makes it even more likely that this wasn't a recording session, but a possible tour feel out session. & I'm excited about that!

I'm new to the board, so please excuse this if it's been asked and/or answered before, but any shows planned for TIDCs?
