I was tired and cranky so I started with two strikes against me btu I really liked this show A LOT. I enjoyed it more than the Boston show I think...I can't really quantify why - perhaps it was the cover of "Whipping Post" I don't have a ton of details at the moment (see: tired and cranky above) but I can tell you that Paul ended the show with a brokedown version of "I WIll Dare" and then told us: "You are all my people and therefore you need to die". No, I don't know what It meant, but it seemed oddly affectionate. The band kicked a ton of ass all night long. I screwed-up the pre-show, couldn't find the bar, but ran into Faith, FAF, KeithD and Rankel after the show.

I was quite disappointed with the half-hearted performance of Merry Go Round. Also, very disappointed with the set list: no Here Comes A Regular, no Achin' To Be, no I'll Be You, no Crackle & Drag, no 2 Days 'Til Tomorrow, no Born For Me. Granted, I'm not going to hear all the songs I want to hear, but I thought at least 2 or 3 of the songs I just mentioned were a GIVEN. Hopefully he plays some of them on night 2.
Also, the Billy Joe Shaver cover was off the hook.

Also, did anybody drive to the city for night 1? I took the Path (I live in NJ) and walked, but that'll be too much for me tomorrow as I have 8 million assignments to do (neither here nor there).
I'm willing to pay $25 for parking, just to save me time!

Great show! Loved the set list, but expecting some cool changes tonite.
Will he teach the band 'Customer'?? PW said they didn't know it, but he played a bit anyway. Probably not. (That was not me who requested it)
Is coming out while the Stones 'The Last Time' is playing a hint???
I caught 'Aurora Borealis' beforehand. Lucky to get in since people with festival passes get first crack. PW is mentioned in 2 scenes and his character appears in another pumping gas. No words. Good movie. Spoke briefly with the writer. Was planning on PW coming to see the movie, but PW couldn't or didn't make it. The writer(forgot his name, but has a promising career) was going to the PW show, also.
Have a great NYC night 2, everyone!

Really good set, missing some songs like AAA but still a great time. The crowd got better halfway through and I go nuts everytime he plays the BB King song. Plus a Sham 69 cover! What the hell it was really cool. Well I'll post on music details later, have to get out to the city.
Everyone I met last night was great and looking forward to hanging with them again tonight.

I thought the show was a blast. Definitely one of Paul's "messy" nights, but personally I find those to be a lot of fun. If I want to hear the song perfectly, I'll put on the album. These messy shows offer a better glimpse of who Paul is.
Highlights included:
- opening with "Stain Yer Blood" and "Final Hurrah" - two tunes I hadn't heard live before and both kicked ass
- playing at least a portion of "Customer" (never thought I'd even see him play that much)
- great covers - Sham 69, "Live Forever" (w/ slightly creepy mention of Shaver's kid killing himself), "Different Drum," Dyan's "Only a Hobo," Allman's "Whipping Post," BB King, and naturally "I Think I Love You"
- absolutely killer versions "Anyway's All Right" (even though the bridge was missing), "Gunshy" and "Alex Chilton"
- watching Paul and the bassist become blood brothers, with the guitarists comment of "I'm sure this is perfectly safe"
- Paul charging the guitarist for taking away his drink (forget what song that was during)
- His false starts at "I Will Dare" and "How Can You Like Him?"
- And hands down, the moment of the night, as Kathy already mentioned, his closing words of "You are all my people and therefore you need to die." Affectionate? Angry? Who knows? But so f*ckin' perfect.
Also, had a good time briefly meeting some of the folks on the board beforehand.

In no particular order after the first 6 songs, here's what he played to the best of my memory:
Stain Yer Blood/Final Hurrah/*Sham 69*/Customer (kinda)/Someone Take the Wheel/Merry Go Round/Live Forever/Kiss Me on the Bus/Makin' Me Go/Now I Wonder/Let the Bad Times Roll/As Far As I Know/Little Mascara/Different Drum/Valentine/Pyschopharmacology/Mr. Rabbit/Swinging Party/Only a Hobo/Whipping Post (aborted)/Vampires and Failures/*BB King*/Anyway's All Right" (minus the bridge)/Love Untold/What a Day For A Night/ Waitress In The Sky/Skyway/Gunshy/Can't Hardly Wait/Knockin On Mine/I Will Dare (aborted)/How Can You Like Him?(aborted)/Alex Chilton/High Time Encore: I Think I Love You/I Will Dare (about 2/3's then stopped)
I'm sure there were other songs I'm forgetting, and like I said, the orders a little all over the place, so please, fill in the gaps!

Somebody else mentioned about 6 other songs he didn't play...I'd like to see a setlist.. What did he do, all covers? CF Paul ripped the set list off the stage and walked over to the side of the stage and threw it away, almost hit me with it, I didn;t pick it up but from what I understand from someone who saw it, what got played and what was on the paper were totally different. Hi Pat

That's everything plus I believe he also played Waitress In the Sky (between Different Drum and Skyway). I definitely wouldn't miss tonight, since last night was "loose and off the cuff," I think tonight will be tighter (but no less fun than last night!!!) In merchandise, kind of a cool poster done only for the Boston and NYC shows for sale. Also, someone asked about parking, there's a garage across the street, however, I found a good one on the corner of 10th and 49th and payed $9.75 (7pm to 11pm).

Wow, Dfactor, I don't know what to say after reading your blog other than you sound like a world-class jackass. I go to I-can't-count-how-many rock shows a year. They are my lifeblood in a lot of ways. I have had some of the most magical moments of my life in places like the ol' Ritz, Maxwell's, Bowery Ballroom, etc, etc. And rarely if ever are those remarkable moments tied to some deep seeded need to behave obnoxiously. You are that guy who can't go to see GBV or PW without getting wasted and throwing yourself around because of some delusional, pathetic belief that that is what rock'n'roll is all about. It ain't. Get over it. And don't be so sure that I'm not having the time of my life just because I'm not spilling my drink all over my fellow concert goers while screaming along with every line and pumping my fist in the air like some drunk in the bleachers at Yankee Stadium. Sometimes the guy in the corner with the lampshade on his head who thinks he’s the life of the party is just a sad, lonely drunk. Oh, and asking for a free ticket on your blog? Very cool.

Night 1 = strkike 1 for me.... Paul & the band was great.. had a blast... Then I tried to shoot back to the rear of the club where my brother & some of my friends were, & I got shoved by some clown thinking I was trying to rush the stage or whatever.... Not a good move on his part.... I called him out on his bad manners & he did what all dudes that shove guys in the back do...nothing & his 2 pals... nothing! Then as I made my way back to the rear of the club one of my friends gets in a shoving match with some other moron... boucncers came in, me & my 4 friends grabbed my pal & tried to get him out harms way ... The bouncers decided to throw the 5 of us out.... once again .....not a good move... we went less then peacfully rolling out into the street with these 2 bouncers...... not fun...I guess I missed the last 20-30 miniutes of the show, so I was uber pissed.... I got hammerd & then made an ass of myself in a drunken stuper in front of FAF,underneathagreathore & rankel....... sorry about that guys... It was cool meeting up with FAF,Rankel,Bhay42,undernathagreathorse,KeithD(again) Kathy, i must have missed you... I just hope they let me in tonight... that would really suck... & i just found out my uncle passed away.... So far, no good...... Oh & as alittle comic relief to the rather dreary post,(I'm depressing myself!) as we were stuggling outside the venue with the bouncers,(we had em outnumbered so it didn't amount to much) one of my friends is a bartender uptown, & Chirstian Slater is in there a lot, so as My pal is restsraing whoever, Slater walks by & say's "hey Matt!" & Matt replys in kind "what's up Christain.." Slater didn't even break stride & Matt didin't loses his grip ...I thought it was funny....
