Salc - jackass in this case I may be, but you wrote... "You are that guy who can't go to see GBV or PW without getting wasted and throwing yourself around because of some delusional, pathetic belief that that is what rock'n'roll is all about."
Well, you're on the right track, but it wasn't about getting wasted - heck, I just thought that Paul deserves more - last night's crowd didn't even go that far - a little movement, a little jumping, anything that's rock n roll's fine, but geez, the first 3/4 of the show was like being a children's classical recital! Polite clapping!
True, we were squeezed in like sardines last night, but think of how much fun a little rockin' up front could've been for Paul and the band!
And yeah, I tried to get a free ticket, but ended up buying one outside the club last night.
To the top of the wall...

And I read that the "Jammys" were held at Madison Square las night and that Ryan Adams was on the bill.
Wonder if he will be catching night #2 at the Supper Club?

I'm thinking both Ryan Adams and Jesse Malin might be making appearances tonight. Here's the bigger question: if Paul knows Ryan's there, will he pick a fight with Ryan? Or dedicate to him "How Can You Like Him"? Not that I dislike Ryan, it's just we all know how Paul likes "wrestling" theatrics.

I think he would just ignore him.... would be a nice way to bury the hatchet to invite him up for a song. It would be hilarious to see them both singing the chorus to "how can you like him" together. Heck, it might even get mentioned in the rock press.

just wanted to thank Dfactor for the big shout-out to me in his blog:
"Old suburban dorks who go to 1-2 rock shows a year, and THIS was their big night out."
Guilty as charged.

Hey, I just received a thoughtful and measured response from Dfactor to my posting, especially in light of the fact that I called him a jackass! FWIW - I wasn't at the show last night (I'll be there tonight and I'll be in Philly Saturday). I was reacting to a certain pet peeve of mine - those guys who try to "bully" people at shows because they don't think they are responding properly (e.g - slamming, moshing, screaming, etc.). I know how much this music means to me and when someone assumes that I'm not "into it" because I'm not going crazy that really pisses me off. That said, I've seen Paul with and without the Mats plenty of times and not all of those shows were inspired by any stretch of the imagination. I just like to think my opinion is based on the performance onstage and not on the audience's response (or lack thereof).

just to clear up some of the shenanigans onstage. what happened was, paul noticed that while kevin was soloing he was using an elaborate cheat sheet. that's what paul grabbed and threw across the stage. then kevin went and retrieved it and so paul grabbed kevin's spare guitar and hoisted it over his head and threatened to break it unless kevin gave up the cheat sheet. kevin begged him not to break the guitar, but paul dropped it anyway, and then crumpled up the cheat sheet. then he offered his pocket knife to kevin for a blood swear but kevin declined saying it was a union house and they couldn't do that, to which paul replied that it was rock and roll and they could do whatever the fuck they wanted. and then a little while later he and jim cut each other's elbows and rubbed their bloodied elbows together.

Did he hurt the guitar? That's pretty cruel of him. It's one thing smashing your own guitars, but you don't mess with someone else's.

apparently not, since kevin used it later on, but it was both hilarious and cruel. kevin said someone stole paul's hat from the bus and he's been like this ever since.

Then as I made my way back to the rear of the club one of my friends gets in a shoving match with some other moron... bouncers came in, me & my 4 friends grabbed my pal & tried to get him out harms way ... The bouncers decided to throw the 5 of us out.... once again .....not a good move... we went less then peacfully rolling out into the street with these 2 bouncers...... I, for one, find humor in your misfortune, and I apologise.

I was quite disappointed with the half-hearted performance of Merry Go Round. Also, very disappointed with the set list: no Here Comes A Regular, no Achin' To Be, no I'll Be You, no Crackle & Drag, no 2 Days 'Til Tomorrow, no Born For Me. Granted, I'm not going to hear all the songs I want to hear, but I thought at least 2 or 3 of the songs I just mentioned were a GIVEN. Hopefully he plays some of them on night 2. Also, the Billy Joe Shaver cover was off the hook. sorry, will.... there are no GIVENS, and haven't been any since the middle of the last leg of the tour. no setlist...he plays what he feels like, every night, without exception.... michaelb

I thought the show was a blast. Definitely one of Paul's "messy" nights, but personally I find those to be a lot of fun. If I want to hear the song perfectly, I'll put on the album. These messy shows offer a better glimpse of who Paul is. Highlights included: - opening with "Stain Yer Blood" and "Final Hurrah" - two tunes I hadn't heard live before and both kicked ass - playing at least a portion of "Customer" (never thought I'd even see him play that much) - great covers - Sham 69, "Live Forever" (w/ slightly creepy mention of Shaver's kid killing himself), "Different Drum," Dyan's "Only a Hobo," Allman's "Whipping Post," BB King, and naturally "I Think I Love You" - absolutely killer versions "Anyway's All Right" (even though the bridge was missing), "Gunshy" and "Alex Chilton" - watching Paul and the bassist become blood brothers, with the guitarists comment of "I'm sure this is perfectly safe" - Paul charging the guitarist for taking away his drink (forget what song that was during) - His false starts at "I Will Dare" and "How Can You Like Him?" - And hands down, the moment of the night, as Kathy already mentioned, his closing words of "You are all my people and therefore you need to die." Affectionate? Angry? Who knows? But so f*ckin' perfect. Also, had a good time briefly meeting some of the folks on the board beforehand. the bridge has been renovated and relocated to "AAA". which, of course, you didn't know, 'cause we didn't play it that night... michaelb

Paul ripped the set list off the stage and walked over to the side of the stage and threw it away, almost hit me with it, I didn;t pick it up but from what I understand from someone who saw it, what got played and what was on the paper were totally different. Hi Pat again.... there's no setlist. we just don't operate with one, anymore. that was a master list of everything we knew, or think we know. it's just there to show what immediately we can choose from. michaelb

My original post on this thread is now null-and-void because night 2 was just so awesome, and satisfied me totally.
But funny thing about "I Think I Love You", did anybody see Tommy Stinson last tour play "Come On Get Happy"? He got down off stage and played the song in the middle of the bar area on acoustic guitar (there were probably 50 people at the NJ show).

Bring it! And see if you can get Paul's ass on here too would ya?
