First off, thanks for posting here Michael. That's awesome.
Second, another memory that just came back to me from night one: did Paul call Kevin "Bob" after they finished a 'mats song? I thought I caught that.

in a rush to describe nyc night two as the best of the tour, i'm now reading a lot of descriptions of night one as drunk sloppy and mats like. i find this to be totally untrue. nyc night one was ten times more focused than chicago, and i'd be hard pressed to even describe chicago as a mats like train wreck.
a few more highlights/rarities of night one that i don't think have been mentioned:
electric guitar version of skyway
full band versions of only a hobo and swinging party
best and most complete version i've ever heard of now i wonder.

But funny thing about "I Think I Love You", did anybody see Tommy Stinson last tour play "Come On Get Happy"? Tommy has been playing "Come on Get Happy" as an occasional cover in his bands since 1993.. But, I get your drift... perhaps Paul's decision to cover that awful Partridge Family-ish song is a nod to Tommy. CF

Unless bigbak, you were hoping someone kicked my ass. Not at all Gravy - I found humor in the situation because I seem to find myself in exactly that situation at times - though most bouncers leave me alone for the most part.

I heard a lot of people calling night 1 drunk and to me he didn't seem to drunk. The song order was quite out there from usual and I loved it. I liked some of the antics, the switchblade, the battle with Kevin which as Michael pointed out ended with Kevin threatening Paul's drink.
There were songs that weren't finished and flubbed lyrics but I wouldn't really call it sloppy. Michael B seemed to stop the possibility of a How Can You Like Him closer. But just before Paul started I Will Dare he looked back at Michael and said "Do I have to?"
Overall a very good show but night 2 really did blow it out of the water.

Thanks for taking the time to clear that up for me. But the shows were just amazing. I love how you guys rip through the Sham 69 cover, I freaked out when you started playing it.

I love how you guys rip through the Sham 69 cover, I freaked out when you started playing it. i had never heard of sham 69. then, one evening, while were waiting on the bus to hit the stage, i hear this song blaring from the rear cabin of the bus. i go back, and paul, jim, and kevin are singing along to "borstal breakout". i ask, "who is this?"... kevin says, "sham 69. just a blip on the punk rock radar screen. all but forgotten, and drastically overshadowed by bands like the clash." every night before the show, i started turning on "borstal breakout" to get juiced up. and everytime i put it on, we would just get rowdy... i suggested to paul that we play it. he tells me that the replacements used to cover it. i say "so what?!!!!" he says, "okay. let's do it!!!" i'm surprised that anyone else knew about this band... they never played the u.s., apparently. i told paul that we should get them to open for us. he said they would kick our ass...LOL!!!! michaelb

Or maybe everyone is really quick with the google... Still bad with the quote thing...

Still bad with the quote thing... It's the blue button in the top right corner. The Mat's used to smoke Borstal Breakout. I need to hear the original to compare it. That's one rowdy ass song. Hope the bootleg of NY shows up.

Hope the bootleg of NY shows up. i'm sure they played it better than we do. for us, it's a throwback, and for fun. for them, they probably meant it a whole lot more than we ever could. there's not a single upset person in the entourage..LOL!!!!! michaelb

Yeah I never saw Sham 69 but I've been listening to their stuff for probably about 6 years. I've been lucky enough to have some people introduce to really great punk bands. I was more than happy to see that song live.

Back in the early to mid nineties those things were always in cut-out bins, usually for around $5. They're out of print now, and are going for as high as $40 on gemm and amazon. Great stuff: Sham 69, Rezillos, Stiff Little Fingers... of course I had to go out and buy all those albums.

Hey, same here. I still have those DIY comps somewhere, they were fabulous. I also bought them out of the cut out bin! I credit them with introducing me to several great bands, like the cool older sibling I never had.

One of my favorites even though it's not the greatest recording. Not much talking by Paul but some blistering performances. Bob was on fire.

Just my 5 cents on NYC night 1... I have to say the arrow swung a tad far into the sloppy-meter. One of those shows that's more fun to read about than to watch. Band were good though. Bad choice of venue tho - too full - drinks way too expensive - and a little scumbag of a security guy saw me about to take a picture and threatened to confiscate my camera if I didn't pay him off with $2 (!). Wasn't worth arguing... you have to choose your fights sometimes... didn't help my enjoyment of the show anyway.
