call me an uninformed PW/mats fan, but i don't think i've ever got the full story on the whole mats SNL performance. what was it, that paul mouthed 'fuck' into the camera or something? and during what song? i wish to add this nugget to my own personal canon of mats lore...thanks for any help...

I believe they performed "Bastards of Young" and "Kiss Me on the Bus" during their SNL appearance...
I believe it was during Bastards that Paul mouthed something, but I can't recall. I'll have to watch it later, and find out.

The boys played "Bastards..." & "Kiss me on the Bus".
During "Bastards" Paul winks at the crowd. At the end of the song, both Paul & Tommy fall to their knees, sorta praying like.
During "Kiss me..." the boys loosin' up even more. Paul plays with the lyrics & call me crazy but it sounds like they could go off into the "Green Acres" theme at any moment. Tommy does mutter something into Paul's mic towards the end, but I have no idea what. Bob finishes things up by throwing his guitar down, points at it & mouths "Thank You".
During the close of the show, when everybody is on stage waving good bye, you can just make out the boys in the back goofing around. Looks like Paul is dancing a little jig.
Between songs, the guys swap clothing. Paul & Chris share a Ghostbusters T-Shirt (I have always found that rather funny) & it's important to note, nobody trades with Bob. I guess they figured only Bob could pull off the striped swim suit look.

If I recall, that episode was hosted by Harry Dean Stanton and I'm thinking Sam Kinison migh thave been on as well? If so, I can only imagine the cast party...that's quite a crew. k.

i like the fact that while the credits were rolling instead of standing up front with the guest host, they're in the background running around and pushing each other then run off camera. that has always cracked me up.

I remember reading something, either Paul or Chris said saying, that none of the SNL people wanted to come near them. "It was like we smelled or something." (I'm paraphrasing)... I always wondered why nobody changed clothes with Bob... I guess he didn't want to wear an ugly striped shirt, or overalls.

Would be great if the videoclip could be found somewhere on-line. Any ideas?

thanks for the replies, but i thought there was something that happened that made old lorne michaels livid. was it just the general drunkeness? in other paul/snl lore, here's a trivia question for ya, which i can actually answer: what does josh freese (i think - the drummer in any case) yell during one of the breaks in paul's 'can't hardly wait' '93 snl performance?
the winner gets....not much...

I cracked up when PW played solo with Charleton Heston as the host, and during the wrap up, seemed old man Charleton blanked on PWs name and skipped the thank you to the musical guest. Paul then coughed, covering his mouth with his right hand, before shaking with Heston. Never sure if it was intentional or not, but was wicked funny if it was!

....the mats were told not to drink unitl after the show, so in true fashion the minute the got picked up in the limo, they started to kick em back, they trashed there hotel room, and made quite a spectacle of the whole thing...i remember reading that while paul and chris n tommy were between sets switching clothes, bob was in the toilet with harry dean smokin a joint...they were trashed the whole time they were there, and lorned michaels is quoted as saying... "..no artist from SIRE will ever play saturday night live again..." to the mats label rep....i think the whole thing is hilarious..i have the whole thing on DVD.....the end of the show is especially hilarious as the boys are runnning around and eventually run off stage...on to better avenues and host i imagine...would've loved to been around for that evening

They said "f*ck", can't remember during which song. k. I thought what made Lorne Michaels livid was Paul saying "Come on, fucker!" to Bob just at the beginning of his guitar solo, probably on Bastards Of Young. You can see it, but you can't really hear it, cuz his head's turned so he's offmike. I'm not sure whether it was encouragement or annoyance Paul was trying to express, probably some combination.

I always wondered what was said. Obviously, it cracks Paul up - but I could never make it out. Since no one seems to have the answer, maybe you can just tell us.

Yup, that was the story I heard. And then Sire had to pay for a lot of damages to SNL to make them forget about that whole "No Sire act will ever play here again" thing.
