I thought what made Lorne Michaels livid was Paul saying "Come on, f*cker!" to Bob just at the beginning of his guitar solo, probably on Bastards Of Young. You can see it, but you can't really hear it, cuz his head's turned so he's offmike. I'm not sure whether it was encouragement or annoyance Paul was trying to express, probably some combination. Yaeh and I'm sure they were talked to about it before they did the next song because during kiss me on the Bus they were saying "darn it".

I remember reading something, either Paul or Chris said saying, that none of the SNL people wanted to come near them. "It was like we smelled or something." (I'm paraphrasing)... From watching that video I am not surprised. Scary looking hair on Paul and, if I am not mistaken, PW has the long side burns that would make for a good mullet. Between Farmer Chris and hairy Bob, that was one clothes challenged bunch. Classic performance though.

Anyone else notice the number on Bob's Les Paul, ala Pete Townsend? Also, doesn't Bob look like he should be playing in Quite Riot or Slade in that outfit? Man, Tommy is the only one who doesn't look weird

Actually maybe it is a tremelo. Can't tell with my crappy PC here at work. But he still looks like he should be in Quiet Riot or Krokas

Man, Tommy is the only one who doesn't look weird They hardly showed Tommy at all - no close ups I think - so perhaps he just looked better by absence. Totally agree with the Bob=Quiet Riot comparison. I think Paul was in his MC5 white afro phase too.

My brother just converted my tape of the performances to DVD so I watched this again last week. I always thought Paul said "Motherf*cker!" during "Bastards of the Young". It's off mike and "Come on f*cker" makes sense since he seems to be yelling it at Bob. It sounds like Tommy says "Darn it" during "Kiss me on the Bus".
That particular episode was not shown live that Saturday night in the Twin Cities. Channel 11 was having some kind of telethon so it played that Sunday night. So, the Uptown Bar announced that they'd have someone tape it off a satellite or something and show the tape of the performances that Saturday night in the bar. A buddy and I went down there, I can't remember who was playing or anything, but at about midnight a TV and VCR were rolled out and a guy comes running in with a video tape and pops it in. Quite a crowd gathered around the TV and a loud cheer rose up when Harry Dean introduced them. The only thing I was thinking was " Don't f*ck up!" and I was tremendously relieved that they didn't embarass themselves.

GtrPlyr, thanks a million for posting that link. I never saw that SNL before and I had heard so much about the Mats' performance. It would have been great to also see "Kiss Me...." but I'll take this. Great stuff...I think that it pretty well sums up all the Mats were about.

No problem go21bucs. Here's another link, for people who haven't seen the September 1981 Mats show, that was taped by Twin Tone. www.twintone.com/video/mats/

Thx GtrPlyr... Don't think I've seen these.. BTW...It's: wop bop a loo bop a wop bam boom Hey swinginparty, weren't you the guy that thought it was "a cathedral of tortures"? Maybe you're not the most reliable source for lyrics ... at least that's what El Goodo says. Here are the lyrics to the Little Richard song, that seem to be posted at a lot of lyric sites. And they seem to be wrong from what I can see... "All over rootie" has anyone ever heard this lyric in the song? TUTTI FRUTTI A-Wop-bop-a-loo-lop a-lop-bam-boo Tutti Frutti, all over rootie,..... A-wop-bop-a-loo-lop a-lop bam boo I got a gal, named Sue, She knows just what to do. ..... I've been to the east, I'vebeen to the west, but she's the gal That I love the best. Tutti Frutti, all over rootie,..... A-wop-bop-a-loo-lop a-lop bam boo I got a gal, named Daisy, She almost drives me crazy ........ She knows how to love me , Yes indeed Boy you don't know, What she's doing to me Tutti Frutti, all over rootie,..... A-wop-bop-a-loo-lop a-lop bam boo I got a gal, named Daisy... That's it, I'm going to search for the proper lyrics. This is after all, the greatest rock and roll lyric ever written, and it deserves to be quoted right.

I've pulled out my Little Richard disc, and the more I listen to the song, the less I think, that any of the posted lyrics are right. It doesn't sound like "bam boom" at the end of the first line to me. It sounds more like "bump bum." Does anyone know the "real" openning lyric to this song? This is almost like that "World Class Fad" thread, all over again.

the version i have from 58 is a wop bop a loo mop a lop bomp bomp and the 62 version is what you have up there and the 69 version sounds like what swingin says(he sings it differently every time, remind you of someone), so its gonna go down as whatever you feel like singing at the time.

The story I had always heard about SNL was that they picked the band up and brought them down to the studio to keep an eye on them. Of course, they sent over a limo with a stocked bar so the band started drinking. Then, they made them stay at NBC for hours on end before the performance. They put them in a room that was stocked with liquor so the band kept imbibing until everyone was good and drunk. Harry Dean Stanton was throwing them back with the band backstage. If you ever see the whole show, he looks pretty lit himself.
As others have said, before the solo on Bastards, Paul called Bob a fucker. Then they switched clothes for Kiss Me On The Bus. The performances were loose but pretty good. No one wanted anything to do with the band so they slinked off during the big cast goodbye at the end.
The band looked like a total wreck. There was a problem with the sound levels on TV at the beginning of Bastards so the band isn't heard at full volume for a few seconds. They were basically themselves (drunk, bad hair, worse clothes, loose, very loud performance) and that was a little too real for the national audience at the time. The studio crowd seemed to dig them but, then again, they have to cheer.
I also remember reading once that NBC got some calls complaining about the performance and Paul's use of profanity during it. I remember reading an article about the history of musical performances on the show when SNL was celebrating its 15th or 20th anniversary. In the article, the Mats were singled out by people associated with the show as one of the worst performances ever. My guess is that it had more to do with Paul saying fucker and them trashing their dressing room than the actual performance. They smoked most of the garbage that I've ever seen on there.
