Well, the thing that worries me most is the nerve damage and I hope it's just temporary damage. Cartilage and ligament damage doesn't worry as much. I'm hoping he'll be able to have full use of his fingers and that it doesn't affect his hand speed and coordination (ie, for changing chords).

not playing guitar for a year can be rough on the actual skills. on top of damaging his hand and arm is even worse. I recently stabbed myself with broken glass below my thumb, 3 months ago., i still dont have feeling in my thumb. its slowly coming back and it wasnt that bad of an injury. Also, your entire arm hurts and its hard to move it. His injury is obviously much worse and i can imagine how p[ainful its going to be just "being" around. cant straighten the arm, the neck can get sore cause of all the tissue and nerves up and down. yikes. it might take along time for feeling to come back to his hand i would imagine.

if i may... i had a very similar injury when i was in 8th grade. my left hand was impaled (top through to palm) with a severed car antenna.
*waits for gasps to subside*
it hurt like a motherfvcker, and i had to get shots, and my hand was shot for awhile. still, i came back just fine. i am a guitar player (not a good one), and i was at the time, too. i was fine. now, i don't make my living playing guitar (thank god), and his injury might be far worse (who knows?), but it might be just fine in a relatively short period of time, too.
and yes, i do still have a scar to prove it.
edit: sorry. i just realized i posted this story on page one of this thread. sorry.

Damn, what a transparent attempt to get that sympathy Oscar nomination. Imagine the drama of PW performing I Belong on piano during the ceremony with one paw all bandaged up. Billy Crystal, or Chris Rock, or Ellen (whomever is hosting) will be in tears!
That Westerberg guy will do anything for a little public attention, I swear.

Some possitive thoughts re. hand injuries:
1. There are some very skilled hand surgeons out there. Paul's sure to find one.
2. Tom Petty broke several bones in his hand and he plays fine.
3. Django Reinhart played with missing fingers.
4. I saw a blues player once at a street fair who had NO left hand and only a thumb and forefinger on his right. He strapped a slide bar onto his left wrist and held a pick with his two right hand fingers and the guy was an AWESOME guitarist. No bull.
5. I'm not an accomplished guitarist- just play for fun- but years ago I mangled the end of my left middle finger in a lawn mower (talk about stupid moves) and I still play.
A devoted musician will use what he/she's got. Paul will find a way to make more great music no matter what the outcome. Meanwhile, were all putting out good thoughts for P.W. I wish him courage and a quick recovery.

2. Tom Petty broke several bones in his hand and he plays fine. I mentioned this the other day (and soon deleted as the rest of my post read as if Paul had an incurable disease rather than an unfortunate household injury, duh), but someone on another board (make what you will of this, truth-wise) said that doctors told Petty he'd never play guitar again, and he did. I don't doubt Paul can muster up enough attitude to want to prove those doctors wrong, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him recover before next year.

doctors told Petty he'd never play guitar again, and he did. Reminds me of the old joke: PW: Doc, will I be able to play the drums when the cast comes off? Doctor: Yes, that should not be a problem. PW: Great! I've always wanted to be able to play drums!

From a guitar playing perspective damaging the left hand is far worse than the right; however, from a regular life perspective, assuming he's righthanded, it's easier to deal with damage to the left hand.
I sliced a tendon on a finger on my right hand back in the '80s. I was out of work for three months and couldn't use the right hand for two months so I had to write, eat, drive, etc. with my left hand. I got used to it after awhile but I was glad to have the right hand back.
One of the good things that came out of it for me was that during the time off of work I had time to sit around and figure out scales and chords on the guitar with my left hand. I don't want to downplay the injury, but I'm sure Paul will figure out ways to compensate for the losses that this injury might cause and it might actually be good from a creative point of view in that he'll be forced to find different outlets to express himself.

Hopeful news. I talked to someone who would know who said Paul is recovering nicely and is expected to be back playing sooner than first forecast and will eventually be close to 100 percent. I can't say who it is, but the person is knowledgeable about the situation.

No, there's no definitive timetable other than that Paul should be playing much sooner than originally forecasted, which was supposed to be a year.

Wonderful news about PW maybe being back in action sooner than expected.
Anybody in the MWT group remember the Gong Show (with host Chuck Barris--I know many do remember so that was a stupid question)? Anyway, once one of the contestants was a guitar player with a regular arm and a nub arm amputated at the elbow. The amputated limb was his strumming appendage. He was actually pretty good but got Gonged off the stage. It was funny as hell. The Panther Burns had a guitarist who picked his guitar with a lobster claw-like hand. He was an excellent player. Do any of the Memphis crowd remember the Country Rockers? That drummer had a defect or two. The C Rockers were the coolest.

There's a guy from here in San Diego named Big Toe. He plays guitar with his feet as he has no arms. www.myspace.com/bigtoerocks I guess he plays bass in his band though.

Though the Xmas season ain't bad timing for my observation, had PW injured himself on Good Friday I'd have an even better conspiracy theory here. Regardless (my imagination probably needs to get a life) does anybody besides me appreciate the eerie connection between the religious themes and overtones of Folker and that PW accidently impaled the palm of his hand?
