While this is not good news, the bright side is he has nothing to do for a while but write new songs.
I'd imagine lots of physical therapy will be in the works, and what better therapy than to start laying music to the words.
He can still have the reunion. Tommy slides over to the guitar and Paul becomes the poser frontman unleashing his inner David Lee Roth.
Or for the next year, he can teach those of us who bought his guitar, and never played a guitar, how to play his guitar.
Seriously, I wish him the speediest and healthiest recovery.

The Not Good News is making the news all over. Trolling google news, I see lots of media outlets carried it in one form or another. Original touches: - Headline: "Could be out for awhile...Wait, why does this look like a wrestling blurb?" ( 411mania.com) - UPI thinks PW had a great 2006 without the Mats best-of even coming out yet: "MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Near the end of a very successful year for Paul Westerberg, the U.S. rock singer has been sidelined after suffering a significant hand injury. ... Those new tracks will be featured on the retrospective album 'Don't You Know Who I Was? The Best of the Replacements' from the Rhino music label, Billboard said." - Filter magazine thinks City Pages serves MPLS and a different Mississippi River town: "Minneapolis/St. Louis blog writer and good friend of Westerberg, Jim Walsh, claims the singer/songwriter 'put a screwdriver through his left hand ...'" - Headline: "Oops and Oww" ( New York Times) - The St. Paul (not St. Louis) Pioneer Press seems to have forgotten the name of its former columnist who broke the news: "Media reports are saying Paul Westerberg severely injured his left hand ..."

From Punknews.orgBillboard have reported that Paul Westerberg of the Replacements has injured his left hand "in order to be sidelined for a year." According to Jim Walsh, a friend of the Replacements former lead singer:
A week or so again he put a screwdriver through his left hand trying to get some wax out of a candle and cut some nerves and ripped some cartilage and hurt himself pretty bad. He's in a cast. He's seen a couple of doctors who say he won't be able to play guitar for a year.
Vagrant have yet to to comment on the situation.
Westerberg had a productive 2006, having scored and provided the soundtrack to the animated movie "Open Season" and reunited with his former colleagues for the first time in more than fifteen years to record 2 new songs for the Rhino-released retrospective Don't You Know Who I Think I Was? The Best of the Replacements, which was released in May

I feel terrible for Paul. He's said that he's uncomfortable without a guitar, and I know how that is to an extent. Not being able to play guitar really, really sucks. Particularly when it's your whole life. I hope he recovers swiftly and can get back to fretting.

The photo is by Catherine Carter. Here's the text ("sporting a cast" is a nice touch, ref. to Androgynous?): Paul Westerberg Badly Injures Playing Hand 12/21/2006 According to Jim Walsh of the Minneapolis weekly City Pages, Paul Westerberg badly injured his left hand last week, when he drove a screwdriver straight through it while trying to get some wax out of a candle. He severed some nerves and ripped some cartilage, and is now sporting a cast. Westerberg is consulting with doctors, who say he will not be able to play guitar for a year. Westerberg, a gifted guitar player, is one of the most influential performers of the past 20 years. As frontman for the Replacements, he wrote some of the best rock ’n’ roll records of the 1980s, marked by their intensity and ragged melody. For the past several years, he has written and recorded his albums alone in his basement, with at times remarkable results. A fiercely distinctive songwriter, Westerberg’s raw vocals and heartfelt lyrics have often shadowed his guitar playing—which is excellent. Running a variety of Gibsons—including Les Paul Juniors and Specials, 335s, and even the occasional Challenger and Melody Maker—straight into cranked 100-watt stacks, Westerberg drew from Ron Wood in the Faces, the great Johnny Ramone, Johnny Thunders, Keith Richards, and Big Star-era Alex Chilton, to create a guitar sound and style very much his own. With a variety of tunings—particularly open-A and open-E, as well as strange tunings of his own concoction—Westerberg has been able to find a guitar sound that perfectly compliments his songs and voice: Ragged, off-kilter, rocking, and melodic. His tone and phrasing can be heard echoing through bands as varied as Green Day, the Goo Goo Dolls, Ryan Adams, and the Black Crowes, among many others. Once, when asked how he explains his musical career to his young son, Westerberg quipped, “I just tell him Daddy is the best guitar player on the block. Always has been, always will be. Even if we have to move.” Gibson wishes Paul a quick and pain-free recovery. It’s a terrible injury for anyone to suffer, much less a player of his talent and inventiveness. Get well soon, Paul.

Truth put to the ol' dictum that if it bleeds, it leads. This was one of the headlines on CNN.com this morning, Dec. 25th: Friend: Westerberg stabs hand with screwdriver
The first time I've ever seen Westerberg in a headline on CNN.com in my life

The Metafilter gang chimes in. Scroll down to find the Hasselhoff reference. Thank you! That explains the concerned e-mail I got from Sister #2 this morning. She was worried about me. I told her the news, while tough, is much easier to take when it's Jim Walsh telling you in an e-mail.

Does he need his hand to sing? posted by Pollomacho at 12:35 AM PST on December 25 I'm with Pollo...what's injuring a hand have to do with singing? Unless he sings like Senor Wences. And who is this guy, anyway? Heck, even David Hasselhoff was able to sing in Germany (he's very popular there) when he severed a tendon on a Tiffany lamp while shaving. posted by orchidthief at 6:59 AM PST on December 25

The news has reached Romania. Here's a couple recent mainstream media mentions: San Jose Mercury News: Screwdriver gets the best of Westerberg Paul Westerberg, front man for influential post-punk band The Replacements, did that old jamming-a-screwdriver-through-your-hand routine, seriously injuring his left hand, his friend Jim Walsh, a Minneapolis writer, reports on his blog. Seems Westerberg was trying ``to get some wax out of a candle'' when the screwdriver, um, cut ``some nerves and ripped some cartilage,'' writes Walsh, who says Westerberg's hand is in a cast. Before the musician jokes about his move, he'll have to face the fact that he'll probably not be able to play guitar for a year. Philadelphia Inquirer (also Charlotte Observer, others: When screwdrivers attack [Same thing ...
