For those who don't have an Internet connection, here's what Walsh wrote: I don't think posting the text (as opposed to letting them follow the link) is gonna help those without an Internet connection very much.

For those who don't have an Internet connection, here's what Walsh wrote: Speaking of prayers, at the end of Paul Westerberg's liner notes on "The Shit Hits The Fans," he wrote "Pray for us, Paul." Well, brother Paul could use some prayers at the moment, because a week or so ago he put a screwdriver through his left hand trying to get some wax out of a candle and cut some nerves and ripped some cartilage and hurt himself pretty bad.Trying to get wax out of a candle? Isn't that like trying to free a slave of ignorance or trying to teach a whore about romance? I was just thinking the same. And plus... How hard could he have been pushing through that wax to make the screwdriver go THROUGH his hand. I guess he's kind of screwed? Not a time for bad jokes.

Flashback to the Everything Goes Wrong video at the end of CFMT, and PW is playing slide on his Fender using a damned screwdriver. Puts extra meaning to that song with a touch of foreshadow.

Let's hope the prescription pain meds don't get a hook in him.
If Def Leppard's drummer figured out a way to play drums without an arm, maybe Pauly will figure a way to still get some of those sweet, crunchy sounds out of a guitar.
Like someone else said, a slide guitar album by Grandpaboy on Fat Possum would be a welcome addition to the catalog.

Maybe it's not as bad as it sounds. Who knows, maybe he already has an album waiting to be released? I'm sure he's got more than enough material for several.

That's going to be a tough rehab, at the least, if he really has ligament damage. I'm sure it won't stop him making music in some way, but it will surely put a crimp in it, at least temporarily. I just hope he doesn't get depressed having to deal with it.

Oh Lord. What else? And he said he was ready to make a really nasty record on foot of his experiences with Hollywood.
No doubt the injury is serious. But as traumas to the hand go, I should think that in due time, a good course of therapeutic rehabilitation might be guitar playing.
Either way, when our man gets liberated from these Job-like trials, he'll be bursting with punk vibe. It might take a while, but the next release might be interesting.
BTW, I've got a friend here in Dublin who plays fiddle at trad sessions. He almost succeeded in sawing off the tip of the third finger on his fret hand. He rehabbed for months. Now he's back playing just as well as he ever has.

Taking wax out of a candle is like trying to remove the air from the atmosphere, and if you could do it, what is the purpose anyway?

This is really terrible news! I wish we could get a little more info on the whole incident, but more importantly the nature of the injury. I t sounds pretty bad, but we don't actually know that much.
Ayone got any more detailed inside info?

Billboard basically rehashing the Jim Walsh post.

Billboard basically rehashing the Jim Walsh post. For fans on the wrong side of the digital divide, here's the text from Billboard: Friend: Westerberg Suffers Severe Hand Injury Paul Westerberg December 22, 2006, 8:45 AM ET Jason MacNeil, Toronto Paul Westerberg severely injured his left hand and could be sidelined for an extended period of time. According to a blog posting from Jim Walsh, a Minneapolis writer and friend of the former Replacements lead singer, the accident occurred earlier this month. "A week or so again he put a screwdriver through his left hand trying to get some wax out of a candle and cut some nerves and ripped some cartilage and hurt himself pretty bad," Walsh says. "He's in a cast. He's seen a couple of doctors who say he won't be able to play guitar for a year." A spokesperson for Vagrant, for which Westerberg records, did not respond to a request for comment by deadline. The injury comes on the heels of a very productive 2006 for Westerberg. Aside from scoring and providing the soundtrack to the animated film "Open Season," he also reunited with his Replacements colleagues Tommy Stinson and Chris Mars for the first time in 15 years to record two new songs for the Rhino retrospective "Don't You Know Who I Think I Was? The Best of the Replacements." Question: Isn't it news that he's still on Vagrant, given that three out of the last four CDs have been on other labels?

Do you mean people without high speed internet or what? just a little joke ... links are great but I like cut and paste jobs best of all, in case the links go away someday, and so the thing everyone's talking about is right there in front of you, in black and white ...

Definitely not good news for Paul, but maybe we'll have a better chance of hearing the remastered Mats cd's with the outtakes next year, now that he will have more time on his, er, hand...

Sorry make that 4 out of the last 5: Open Season (Lost Highway), Don't You Know Who I Think I Was (Sire/Reprise/Rhino), Besterberg (Rhinio), Dead Man Shake (Fat Possum) I thought I'd heard some rumblings here that the action on other labels put his Vagrant status into question but I realize these were all distinct projects in their own ways and as you say not proper PW CDs though they all had new songs by him.

I'm hoping for a spoken word project. Or a reading of the novel he's got kicking around. Or a performance of Dickens' A Christmas Carol with Paul doing all the characters.
Here's hoping Paul has a quick recovery. Being injured is a drag, so I'm pulling for him. Aargh. Feel like a friend just got dumped on Christmas.
