This magazine called 'Paste' showed up in my mail the other day. It is out of Georgia and focuses on music with some wit and depth. Comes with a sampler CD each month. I like it. Free music is always interesting. They have an interview with Bob Mould this month that is worth a read. Page 2 mentions Minneapolis and the Mats when Hüsker Dü was blooming. Nice article. Thanks for posting the link, Schecky.
I found this part pretty interesting:
“There was healthy competition within each community, a healthy competition between communities and also a respect for one another. The Replacements would write a song about Hüsker Dü like ‘Somethin’ To Du,’ and I would write one back at them, like ‘First of the Last Calls.’
"First Of The Last Calls"
It's just like a battle zone You got a bottle, now you're on your own Gotta be a scotch or a kamikaze None of those other weapons will faze me
First of the last calls It's in your heart, it's in your mind First of the last calls Cashing it in before your time
Hundred hundred hundred bottles on the wall You wonder if you can drink them all Gotta go home at 1:00 AM The bottle wins the battle again
I don't really see how this song is about the Replacements, except for the nod toward drinking. I would have thought that "It's Not Funny Anymore" would be aimed more at the Mats, especially the second verse:
"It's Not Funny Anymore"
You can do what you want to do You can say what you want to say You can think what you think you want It doesn't matter anyway
It's not funny anymore
Play what you want to play Hear what you want to hear Don't worry about the result Or the effect is has on your career
Act like you want to act Be what you want to be Find out who you really are And don't pay any attention to me
This song is probably autobiographical, but that second verse really nails the Mats, although it could probably be used to describe many bands at that time.

I've noticed Paste showing up in a few supermarkets lately. Don't know if that's a nationwide thing, or just our grocery stores taking a risk on a magazine with a smaller circulation.

Not to stray too far off topic, but here is an interesting article about the magazine. It seems Paste's buyout of Tracks' subscriptions explains their recent increase in circulation.

so what's bob mould like? is he an approachable person? i don't know too much about him since I never was a husker du fan. but from what i've read about him, he seems a little ornery. he lives in DC now and am wondering if i ever ran into him if he would get bent out of shape if a music fan said hello to him or anything.

He's actually seemed pretty pleasant to me most times I've seen him on stage. At the taste of MN he posed for a picture with Wolf while I was off being the beer wench. Pretty relaxed humorous demeanor. Now Grant on the other hand.....

oh, okay. cool! maybe he just comes across as being ornery in interviews when talking about the break up of the band. I've read on his website that he goes to some of the same restaurants and music venues in the area that I like going to. I thought that if I ran into him it'd be cool to say hi, but I didn't know if he was uncomfortable or not with people approaching him.

i've said hi to him on an occasion or two, and he was perfectly pleasant to me. i didn't stand around asking him questions or gushing, so that might have something to do with it, but it was clear i was a fan by the fact that on one occasion i was wearing a husker du tee shirt
(and no, i wasn't seeing him in concert when i was wearing the tee shirt. to paraphrase jeremy pivens from "pcu", i wasn't that guy.)

Yep, that's how I got it. I had signed up for the free Tracks subscription. I only received one Tracks before it folded, but I like the direction of Paste better.

I'll be hitting the DC show.
First time he'll be playing Sugar and Husker stuff with a full band.
With Brendan Canty (from Fugazi) on drums how can you go wrong?

Don't know about the others, but I believe Gimme Noise was about The Suburbs.

Apparently, he's planning on playing songs from his entire career. I'm hoping to see him later this month in Minneapolis. Would you mind letting us know how the London show went?

BlastT. will do, i'll do a review of sorts sometime tomorrow. I've got my Westerberg t-shirt on for the gig, i hope there's no lingering Mats / Huskers rivalry, ...haha! ;D
