Yeah, most of this stuff has been available for years, via bootlegs. There's a few interesting songs, that never made any of the albums, and some interesting alternate takes on old classics. Definitely worth having, if you're a fan.
As for the guitar noodling tracks, it sure sounded like someone had been listening to Eddie Van Halen.

Bob Stinson's death made the mainstream newspapers in New Zealand. It made some of the papers here in Toronto too, but it wasn't on the front page like Cobain's death. Bob got a paragraph in the Entertainment section, that was it, for the guitarist from one of the most influential bands of the last few decades.

Heres another question.... Had PW died right after Pleased to Meet Me was released when people speak of him the same way people speak of Kurt Cobain who is far less talented IMO? I doubt PW would have got the same hyperbole that Kurt Cobain received. The reason being that Nirvana were established multi-platinum selling artists when KC died, whereas, The Mats collective record sales at the time would have probably have been no higher than a few hundred thousand. I don't thnk the mainstream media cares as much about an "obscure/under the radar" talent like PW, they're concerned with people who have instant name recognition. If PW had died, it would have probably been a backpage item in most papers at best.

If you can find it, Alt-Rock-A-Rama by Scott Schinder has a great chapter by Chris Mars entitled "Eight Really Dumb Things the Replacements Did." There's some great--and scary--road stories in this one.
As mentioned above, Let it Be by Colin Meloy of the Decemberists, is a fans rememberence of that album, its influence, and growing up in the 80's as a teenager.
There are also chapters on the Mats and PW in numerous music almanac type books: Trouser Press Record Guide, All Music Guide, Rolling Stone Record Guide...

I love this album. It's has some of Paul's best, and most introspective songwriting on it. It's also his most eclectic album. Everything from, jazzy piano ballads, to flat-out rockers, to Dylanesque folkers.

My favorite video of all time is the one for "Dyslexic Heart", from the movie "Singles". I saw that video the other day. Does anybody know if that was Jeremy Piven in the video. It sure looks like it.

sure... you take the lead in post totals, and the next thing you know, you're making polls... bastards is, of course, a classic... (always been kinda fond of the Love Untold, too...) Yeah, I just saw "Love Untold" the other day. I always thought it was one of his best. Of course he probably only has 6 or 7 videos, not including those bits on the CFMT DVD. Once in a while, I got to throw out a poll I guess I'm still waiting for Nudge to start one!

Seeing Elegant Mules video thread, inspired me to start this one.
Though I hate music videos in general, I thought it would be interesting to see what videos people will pick.

I would venture a guess, that Pete Townsend, and definitely Keith Richards, influenced Paul's rhythm playing.
Paul, Keith, and Pete, are probably three of the best rhythm guitar players in rock and roll ever...
I remember Don Was saying something like "Paul is one of the best rhythm players I've ever seen," when he was interviewed during the Suicaine sessions.

I don't know if it's the same discs that are selling on E-bay, but I just got a cool, 2-disc Mats DVD today. It has lots of interviews. Most of the interviews are during the All Shook Down era, when Paul was more willing to "play the interview game." There's some live performances (SNL and some small club performances), and some videos. There's also some Bash & Pop, Chris Mars, and PW solo stuff on there. Overall it's very cool...
Unfortunately I don't have a DVD authoring program, or I'd be able to copy these for the people who want it.

Now you're talking Goodo!
Pavement definitely filled the void, after the Replacements broke up. I love Slanted & Enchanted (even bought the Slanted & Enchanted: Luxe & Reduxe, last year, because of the extra stuff). Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, was also terrific. Even the later stuff (wowee zowee, Brighten the Corners, and Terror Twilight), though not as consistently good as those other two albums, have a lot of quality songs.
If you want a good DVD of the band, check out the two-disc package: Slow Century. It has a couple of concerts; an hour long documentary; all the videos they ever did, and some other stuff that I can't recall right now.

Today I've been spinning, Lookin' Up in Heaven, quite a few times. After reading about Paul's dad, this song seems to have taken on more poignancy, then before.

that's not even funny. i read that and my stomach began to churn, i threw up a little right in my mouth and i thought he's not as cool as i thought he was. not at all! You're right. That's not funny it's very sad! The sad thing is, I once dated this girl, who actually owned Celine Dion CD's. I tried to steer her towards the light, you know, a reverse brainwashing program. I would play Mats/Paul music late at night, while she was sleeping. It didn't work, and needless to say, neither did the relationship. Lesson learned. Always look at your potential mates music collection, before making any rash decisions.

Today, the song I have a crush on, is "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion...
Sorry! What I meant was, the song I want to see crushed!

Hey Brad,
Like you, I only have a couple of the GBV discs. Having listened to this Best of, a couple of times now, I think I can safely give this a big thumbs up. This would be a great way for you, to get a good compilation, of some of their best music, on one disc!
I know the GBV faithful, will probably disagree with some of the songs selected, but to my ears it's pretty damn good!
You can't go wrong with 32 songs and about 70+ minutes of music.

I just bought Guided by Voices - The Best of (I know, best ofs are usually lame, but not this one!). So, anyways, tonight I've been drinking in all 32 of these glorious songs.

I've been listening to this Wren's album "the meadowlands," for the past few weeks, and I'm loving 90% of the songs. Definitely one of my favorite albums of the year! A real grower!
