Kathy - having seen the band in Toronto, I can say with confidence that you will be so pumped and excited for that moment when the Mats finally take the stage that you'll be fine. I still can't believe how awesome they were and already are hoping for a mini tour this winter or next spring. You are about to have an experience of a lifetime so enjoy!

Ish - also consider grabbing Ten Years After or Isolation Party - two awesome records full of power-pop goodness. Tommy Keene is a gifted songwriter and one hell of a guitar player....

As I said in another thread, it's kind of crazy to drive ten hours over two days just to see a band play an hour or so at a festival, but this was one of the best decisions I ever made. It's been a few weeks now but I'm still feeling the buzz from those opening chords of "Takin a Ride" to the final cymbal crashes of "IOU". Much as I hoped for a great show, I was not prepared for the rock n' roll onslaught of a band ready to again stake their claim as one of the great American rock bands of all time. Its largely out of focus, but here's a photo I snapped that to me captures that moment in time:

After Sunday's show, think it's fair to say anything goes. If I had to guess, I could see Customer, Talent Show, Nevermind or I'll Be You make an appearance.
One think that stuck with me after witnessing the show in Toronto is all the quotes from Paul & Tommy over the years downplaying the "drunken mess" legend and how the audience was shortchanged on those occasions. Seems the consensus assessment of The Mats was they were a brilliant rock n' roll force one night, intoxicated mess the next. Judging by last Sunday's take-no-prisoners rock assault, I think Paul & Tommy may be out to show that, at its heart, this was one hell of a band live.

Totally agree on capturing this band on tape. Having witnessed the power of last Sunday's show, however, I totally disagree about an acoustic set - they need to capture the loose, raw, rockin' tour-de-force that is The Mats right now, before that flame goes out. Roll in the Marshalls and Gibson guitars, turn it up, press "Record" and get out of the way. Without exaggeration, the band was on fire from the first note and wildly exceeded every expectation of this longtime fan. Took me two days to reach Toronto (nevermind a ten-hour nonstop drive home through pouring rain the following day) just to see a band play for an hour or so at an outdoor festival. One of the best decisions I ever made.

Does anyone know what the attendance was at Sunday's show? I had some friends asking me, but I'm horrible at estimating these things (like, can't even get a ballpark figure) Sunday's show was sold out - 10,000 in attendance

Nowhere Is My Home would be amazing - for me, that's Bob 's finest solo ever.
Other deep cuts - Kids Don't Follow or Hold My Life, now those would rock....
Can you believe we're even having this discussion?

Joe - I respectfully disagree. When Paul played NYC night #2 on the Folker tour, my buddy kept yelling out for Bastards (he had even more to drink than I). At one point between songs, Paul stops and says "Bastards is one of two songs I won't play without The Mats." I expect to hear it in Toronto ten days from now!

I still think they should hire Tommy Keene. I concur. Tommy Keene would be a perfect fit.

My guess is I Don't Know, then right into I Will Dare. But how awesome would Hold My Life or Color Me Impressed sound?
Couple days ago if you told me we'd be debating the Mats' opening song for their upcoming shows.... F!$king unbelievable.

It's as thought this is the missing piece from Come Feel Me Tremble - "the trick, the trick is there's gotta be goosebumps"
When I first heard "My Road Now" I immediately got goosebumps.....

Assuming Quincy Jones isn't available, I second the Rick Rubin suggestion. Lock him, Paul and Tommy in a remote studio with a slammin' drummer.....

And Runaway Wind just might have Paul's best guitar solo captured on record....
